Chapter 2

Author: Rising Cloud in the Mist
The man who went into the suite was kicked out. He looked disheveled and was bleeding profusely from his lower body.

Hugh had lost his composure. He lunged onto the man sprawled on the floor.

He kept punching him until he fell unconscious.

After the man was dragged away, Hugh walked with Lana in his arms. Her face was streaked with tears.

Our gazes met.

That familiar, sinister look in his eyes sent a chill down my spine.

It reminded me of the darkest moment in my life that I least wanted to remember.

Hugh was my father’s most trusted man, whom he had raised as his own son.

Back then, internal power struggles tore the gang to pieces.

My father had sent him abroad on a mission.

My seven uncles, who shared no blood relation with me, audaciously drugged me in their scramble for power.

I was tortured for a full forty hours.

By the time Hugh rushed back, I was lying in the hospital.

To keep the peace, my father chose to sacrifice me.

Ever since, I developed severe PTSD and often attempted to end my life.

During my last attempt, Hugh held me and carved seven bone-deep cuts over his chest.

He had the very same sinister gaze. It looked so calm that it sent chills down my spine.

“Taz, I’ll make sure every last one of those monsters gets what’s coming to them.”

The memory of that night crashed over me like a wave.

Before I could even collect myself, Lana stepped in front of Hugh and said in a choked voice, “Tasmin, do you really think you run this whole show? You’re just a loose woman who’s been passed around by everyone! What gives trash like you the right to lead the Sheargold family?”

The auction hall fell deathly silent as everyone gasped.

Even Hugh’s expression darkened.

The Sheargold family owned this auction house.

Everyone knew it was forbidden to speak of that incident.

Lana, however, had the nerve to bring it up in public.

“Hugh, I’m not afraid. I don’t care if she kills me—”

Before she could even finish her sentence, I fired a shot straight at her.

If Hugh had not reacted quickly, the bullet would have shot straight through her heart.

Lana was in so much pain that she nearly fainted, but she bit her lip hard and whispered something to Hugh.

Hugh’s breath caught. He immediately scooped her up and strode toward the exit.

The security guards at the auction house closed in from all sides.

Hugh had once been my father’s most trusted man and had exceptional fighting skills.

But he was outnumbered with Lana in his arms. Soon, he, too, was bloodied with wounds.

“Ms. Sheargold, that woman is nothing but trouble!” Bennet said urgently.

I looked at Hugh. His gaze was hostile.

Then, I looked at Lana. Her clothes were not even disheveled.

I blinked back the tears and let out a bitter laugh.

Every last shred of hope I had held for Hugh was gone.

“Let them leave.

“While you’re at it, tell the man from the Northside that I accept his engagement offer.”

After that incident, Hugh did not return home for three days.

During his absence, word from the Northside spread fast.

Everyone who had purchased those private photos at the auction met with one mishap after another.

Hugh had always been deranged, so I was not surprised.

What I did not expect was that Lana, reckless as she was, would still dare to provoke me.

She mailed the pregnancy test results and photos of the half-dead men to my house. Every line of her note reeked of smug contempt.

“Tasmin, what does it matter if you run the show? You still got passed around till they had to take your womb out. You’ll never have a kid in your life!

“This baby in my belly is Huey’s, which is something you couldn’t buy with all your prayers and offerings.”

I laughed in exasperation.

I burned everything she had sent to ashes.

The next day, Hugh stormed into my house in rage.

He kicked Bennet straight into the fountain. He was so angry that he could kill someone right then.

I waved my hand and sent someone to pull Bennet out of the fountain.

“What, being a psycho out there wasn’t enough for you?”

He threw the miscarriage report on the floor angrily.

I slapped Hugh again. His head snapped to the side. His hair fell over his eyes and made his face unreadable. His hand reached his waist and drew the very sidearm he had taken from me that day.He put the gun in my palm, wrapped my finger around the trigger, and pointed the muzzle at his heart.“Do you feel better?“If not, you can pull the trigger.”I let out an exasperated laugh.“Hugh, you really are pathetic! You think I don’t have it in me?”That gaze of his brought back every ounce of past hatred in an instant. My hand trembled slightly. In the end, I swung the butt of the gun and struck him across the face.“Killing you would only mess up the new life I’ve built for myself.“You’re not worth my hands getting dirty.”I stood up and walked away. Through the French window, I caught the reflection of Hugh’s motionless figure. He looked as if he had lost his soul.…That night, Bennet rushed over in a panic. He did not exchange any pleasantries. “Do whatever you want to her. This time, I won’t stop you.”I looked down at Lana. She was quivering as she covered her ears and mumbled something incoherent to herself. She had clearly lost her mind.“Hugh, even if you drive her insane or kill her, does it change anything?”The night breeze was cold. I swept my gaze across the vibrant flowers and trees surrounding us.I said calmly, “Soon enough, you’ll find out what I actually like.”As night came, a sudden fire broke out in the estate. The blaze consumed miles of flowers and trees, reducing everything to ashes. When Hugh rushed over with a pale face, I smiled and said, “You see it now? This is what I call beautiful.”I let out a few carefree laughs, hummed a little tune, and went back to sleep. That night, Hugh stood in the courtyard without sleeping a wink.He did not order anyone to stop the fire.He simply stood there, motionless, through the entire night.…At dawn, I was woken by a commotion.Arnold barged into

A single gunshot drove the noisy crowd to silence.Hugh’s hand, which was about to reach for his weapon, was pierced by a bullet. It was left dripping with blood.I kept my arm extended in the firing position. Then, I calmly placed the sidearm back into Wilde’s hand and met Hugh’s shocked gaze.“Hugh, how do you have the nerve to show up in front of me again?”Hugh clutched his bleeding hand.He did not let out a single cry of pain and just stared at me with teary eyes.“Taz, please come home with me.”I could not help but let out a sneer.Hugh still believed that he and I had a home to go to.My reaction hurt Hugh deeply. He forced a strained smile and said, “Taz, you promised that no matter what, we would never leave each other behind.”His voice remained gentle, but the words that came out sent chills down everyone’s spine.“If you won’t come with me, then we can die together here.”With that, he tore open his coat to reveal rows of explosives strapped around his body.

Wilde paused, then looked at me. “What reputation?“Also, I take ‘til death do us part’ thing seriously. There’s no such thing as divorce with me.”He let out a chuckle and floored the gas pedal. The car accelerated forward at breakneck speed and made my heart race.“If you want, we can die together right now.”The harsh wind howled past us.I finally smiled as my heart began to race faster.“Wilde, you really are insane!”He smiled back with the same wild defiance.“Tasmin, opportunities go to the ones who deserve them. If some idiot fumbles them, that’s his problem.“People who are considered insane are always bound to end up in the same place.“We’re made for each other.”… During my time in the Rafferty family’s mansion, I occasionally received news from the Southside. After my fake death, Hugh had gone completely insane. He had become even more sullen and obsessive than before. The Sheargold consigliere declared me a traitor, unworthy of the family name. It was a jar containing a pair of fetuses preserved in formalin.“Mr. Castillo, when you were injured and paralyzed, Ms. Sheargold terminated her pregnancy just to test new drugs on herself for you. That’s why she can never have children again.“Do you know she’s had chronic injuries in her knees for years? Every time the weather gets cold, the pain hits so hard she can barely stand it. That came from all those years of praying on her knees at temples and churches for your safety.“She tested thousands of drugs on herself for you. Her health was destroyed. She always felt deep sorrow that she couldn’t bear children. How could you do this to her for another woman?”Bennet had watched me grow up since I was a child. His eyes welled up with tears as he spoke.Back then, I had chosen to bear all the pain alone so that Hugh would not feel guilty. All these years, I prayed to God, not just for him but also out of remorse for the twins I had terminated.Hugh stared stiffly at the two t

On his deathbed, my father had said to Hugh, “Tasmin is a cold, heartless monster. She’s ruthless and selfish to the core.“Hugh, if you choose her, you’ll live to regret it.”After leaving the hospital, I went to the racetrack to drive.Hugh’s words kept echoing in my mind the entire time. The wind was bitterly cold, and it stung my skin.“Ms. Sheargold, all the videos have been taken down. We found out that someone on the Northside is the one who did it.”I glanced at Bennet’s grim expression.Bennet added, “Mr. Castillo left the hospital and went to the old estate. The consigliere is calling you in now. It doesn’t look like they’re inviting you for tea.”I nodded and instructed him to prepare a few items for me.By the time I arrived at the Sheargold family’s mansion, Hugh was seated imposingly in the main chair.A signet ring lay beside his hand. This ring was the token of authority for the head of the Sheargold family.I had searched for it for years. I did not expect
