Chapter 5

Author: Hydra
"Whitney?" The nurse didn't understand and found it baffling.

"She's my girl–"

"William–"

A few of his friends walked in. Their expressions were somber. "Whitney isn’t here. You were in a car accident. It's been twenty-four hours, and she still hasn’t shown up. Most likely, just like back then, she ran away again."

William’s face soured.

After a moment, he let out a sarcastic laugh. "Of course. This is exactly the kind of thing Whitney would do. How ridiculous. I actually wondered if she'd be here this time."

I shook my head, desperately shouting at him, "I'm here, William! I've always been here!"

I wanted to tell him that I never abandoned him. But no matter how loudly I called out, William couldn’t hear me.

In the end, I broke down crying.

Fate was truly cruel. I was right beside him, yet he had no way of knowing.

The people around him started cursing at me, venting William’s anger for him.

"Ugh, shameless gold diggers like her should just get lost!"

"Yeah, as far away as possible!"

I leaned against the corner of the wall, listening to them hold a public trial against me.

Night fell once again.

I stood up dazedly from the corner and suddenly realized that my soul had become much fainter.

Could it be that even my time as a ghost was running out?

"Hmm." In his sleep, William furrowed his brows.

I floated over, wanting to smooth them out for him.

But then, he suddenly spoke. "Whitney, I hate you!"

My entire being trembled, and then an overwhelming sadness crashed over me.

'William, I'm sorry! I've disappointed you again. I'm sorry.'

A cool sensation slid down the corner of my eyes. So even a soul could shed tears.

I raised a hand to wipe them away, only to see that my hand had become even more transparent.

Could this be tied to William’s feelings toward me?

The more he gave up on me, the closer I came to completely disappearing.

'William.' I caressed his brows, and the sheer pain of my reluctance to leave tore me apart.

The next morning, the doctor came in for rounds.

William, however, was adamant about being discharged.

No matter how much his friends tried to dissuade him, he wouldn’t listen.

I was getting anxious when Mike walked in. "If you still have a conscience, then please take care of yourself. Don’t let Whitney’s efforts go to waste."

William looked up, the flames of hatred burning in his eyes. "So you’re one of those doctors who helped Whitney lie to me too?

"You mentioned "her efforts"? Is that what you call abandoning me for another man every time I was in trouble?

"Does a woman like that even deserve my love?"

I had heard these words many times before.

Yet, I still couldn't stop the deep sorrow from flooding in.

Hearing William’s words, Mike couldn't hold back any longer. "Whitney isn’t that kind of person. Have you considered that maybe she had her reasons?"

"Haha." William immediately sneered.

"What kind of reason could she possibly have?

"A selfish woman like her deserves to die!

"From now on, I don’t want anyone mentioning her in front of me."

Every word and sentence cut into me like a blade.

I clenched my fists. Tears streamed down my face.

Maybe this was for the best. This way, William could forget about me sooner and start a new life.

When that happened, I would completely disappear from this world.

William insisted on leaving the hospital.

Once he got home, he had all of my belongings gathered up and burned.

"A woman as unfaithful as her, I feel sick just looking at her belongings."

Our housekeeper, Tina, who had just rushed home, watched as my belongings were thrown into the fire one by one. Unable to hold back, she spoke up. "Mr. Gavin, Ms. Spencer truly loved you. You were the only person she cared about."

She had been in this household the longest, witnessing all the sweet moments between William and I. Although I returned with a ruined reputation, she had seen every little thing I did for him. It had moved her.

"Only me?" William let out a mocking laugh.

"If she only loved me, then why did she run away again when I was at my worst?"

"I–" Tina was at a loss for words.

I had already been shattered into pieces by grief.

"I didn’t run, William. I never ran away. I’ve always been here."

He couldn’t hear me.

In his rage, he grabbed a box from the ground.

It was the one I used to store our photos.

There were pictures of us climbing Mount Titancrest and hiking the Stormridge Heights. Everytime we reached a peak, he would pull me close to take a picture. He once said that one day, we would look back and reminisce on all these photos when we were old.

Those were our happy, beautiful memories.

"No! Please don’t burn them!"

I desperately tried to stop him, crying and begging. My eyes filled with bloodied tears. But William still emptied the photos into the fire.

As the flames swallowed them, my body became even more transparent. It was almost completely invisible.

I was about to disappear.

'Goodbye, William.'

"Whitney, the biggest regret of my life was falling in love with you. I will forget you completely, forever."

Clenching his jaw, William poured out the rest of the box’s contents.

Suddenly, he noticed some documents. They are a will and a donation agreement.

William continued, "Wasn't this what you did to Whitney back then?"If you could frame her with fake evidence, why can't I do the same to you?"Jennifer's eyes widened in disbelief as she staggered back. "So you never intended to marry me? This whole wedding was just to humiliate me and avenge Whitney?"William let out a cold snort. His silence was his answer.Jennifer looked at him, then at the murmuring crowd below. She let out a bitter laugh before completely breaking down. Then, suddenly, she raised her hand and pointed at William. "You’re taking revenge on me, but what about yourself? You were the one who hurt Whitney the most!"She loved you so much. She gave you her kidney, yet just because of a few words from others, you doubted her and hurt her. If it weren’t for your blindness, how would I have even gotten the chance to frame her?"William, you’re the one who deserves to die!"Wham! As soon as she finished speaking, she was slapped hard across the face.Estelle, Wil

"What did you say?" William was in utter disbelief."It's true, sir. It was Ms. Spencer. The doctors said that after your car accident, when no suitable kidney donor could be found, she begged them to test her for a match. She turned out to be compatible. To prevent you from refusing out of guilt, she chose to donate anonymously."After the surgery, she went away alone to recover, keeping it a secret the whole time.""She went away to recover–" William's face turned pale. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to the ground. "That’s impossible."His subordinate sent over the evidence. William clutched his phone, staring at the screen as tears streamed down his face."So that donation agreement was real. She never abandoned me to run away with someone else. It was me. I was the one who wronged her."And after she came back, I treated her so cruelly. I humiliated her, tormented her, and made her fish the ring out of the freezing river. I mocked her scar and used the wedding to toy wi

William strode over. He was tall and covered the distance quickly. He glanced at the priest, then at the urn containing my ashes, and frowned. "What the hell are you doing?"Jennifer panicked for a moment but quickly regained her composure. "Oh, a friend of mine passed away."She shot me a sidelong glance before continuing, "She was just like Whitney when she was alive, shameless and immoral. She cheated on her boyfriend with seven or eight different men and ended up dying miserably from some filthy disease."Out of the kindness of my heart, I hired someone to perform a ritual for her."William looked disgusted. "A woman like that? Why bother giving her a proper send-off? She deserves to have her bones crushed to dust and be sent straight to hell."With that, he strode forward, grabbed the urn, and raised it. He was ready to smash it."No–"Mike had long felt something was off about Jennifer. Following his instincts, he had rushed over, only to witness this scene.Without a sec

After Jennifer left, William leaned against the wall and smoked a cigarette. His mind was filled with Mike's words and the donation agreement.Logic told him that he had never wronged Whitney, but he still decided to investigate. He called his subordinate. “Find out who donated their kidney to me back then. And also, look into who Whitney eloped with, both in the past and now.”'Whitney, you lied to others, claiming you sacrificed for me. Let’s see how ugly you look when your lies are exposed,' William thought. The wedding preparations continued.William and Jennifer went to a bridal boutique.Jennifer picked out a white wedding dress and asked William, “Does it look good, William?”William was momentarily dazed. He then sneered in disgust. “It’s hideous. It doesn’t suit you. Pick another one.”I stood nearby and observed. It was the same dress I had once chosen. He really did hate everything related to me.“You again? Why do I see you everywhere I go?” William turned and saw

'What's that?'Confused, William leaned on his cane and stepped forward. He retrieved the document from the fire. The date on the donation document was the very day he had received his kidney transplant. His heart pounded as he frantically looked down, only to see a single name written in the donor column, Whitney Spencer.William's body jolted violently. "Whitney? How could it be her?"Just then, my transparent form solidified once again.I stared in disbelief at the document before me.I had sealed these papers away and thrown them into the storage room. No one should have found them, let alone placed them inside this box. Then, as I caught sight of Tina, her eyes brimming with tears, I instantly understood that it was her doing. She had secretly kept them for me."William–"Jennifer suddenly appeared, supporting William so he wouldn’t collapse."Are you okay, William? Did you just find out about Whitney secretly meeting another man at a hotel?""What did you say?"Willi
