~ Mia ~

The DNA results came back eight days after my surgery.

Dr. Jonathan read them out in my hospital room with everyone gathered around the bed.

"Probability of parentage. Ninety-nine point nine nine nine seven percent."

My mother burst into tears. My father read the printout over and over, as if the numbers might change if he looked long enough. Ryker grinned so wide it looked painful.

"Told you," he said. "I wasn't going to be an only child forever."

~ 20~ Mia ~"And that gray building past the square is the old grain exchange," I was saying, turned half around in my seat. "They converted it to the pack archive when I was…"The world hit us from behind.Metal on metal, a hard shove that threw the whole car forward, and my mother moved faster than thought — both arms around me, her body between mine and the seat in front, taking the jolt herself. The car rocked, settled. Horns somewhere. The driver was already twisting around."Everyone all right? Doctors…""I'm fine. Mama…" She was still wrapped around me. "Mama, let go, let me look at you. Your arm…""It's nothing.""You're holding your wrist against your chest. That is not nothing." I took her forearm in both hands, gently, and she hissed through her teeth before she could stop herself. Swelling already, over the distal radius. "Don't move it. Hailey?""Fine." Hailey was checking Ryker; Ryker was checking all of us at once. "Everyone's fine. Somebody rear-ended us at a light… g

  • The Ex-Luna's Return: No Longer His Doormat   ~ 19: Dr. Liliana Quinn

~ 19~ Darian ~Kade stood on the other side of my desk, two days of digging written under his eyes."So Franklin Cross is what. A rich merchant who values his privacy?""Possibly." Kade didn't sit. "Or possibly someone from another pack's ruling class entered East Lake without declaring themselves. And if that's what happened, Alpha, we have a political problem. An undeclared noble on our soil, moving under a ghost name, sitting one wall from the Alpha's family…""I was there, Kade.""Then you understand why I haven't slept." He exhaled. "It could be nothing. A businessman. A widow with old money. But identities this good aren't built for nothing, and they aren't woken for nothing. Nineteen years asleep, and it surfaces the same week the…"He stopped himself."The same week the what?""The same week the Red Moon delegation arrived," he said. "Which is the other reason I'm here." He set a second file on the desk, thicker, bound in the Academy's blue. "Dean Franklin has been asking thr

  • The Ex-Luna's Return: No Longer His Doormat   ~ 18: Fabricated

~ 18~ Darian ~We were in the middle of the birthday cake when my phone rang.Border patrol — a rogue sighting near the eastern line. Nothing my Beta couldn't handle, but the signal in the suite was poor, so I excused myself, ruffled Leo's hair on the way past, and took the private lift down to the lobby. The call took five minutes. I was putting the phone away and turning back toward the lift when movement at the main entrance caught my eye.A party was leaving. Staff scrambling, doormen bowing — the kind of send-off Prandi reserved for royalty. An older woman in furs was escorted out first. A young woman followed, laughing at something. And then, crossing under the lamplight toward the open car door —A tall woman in a dark coat, her hair swept up. She turned her head to answer someone, just for a second, and the light caught her profile.I froze.Mia.The angle of her jaw. The line of her nose. The way she tilted her head when she was listening — I had watched that exact head-tilt

~ 17~ Mia ~"Okay, before we go in," Hailey said, turning around in the front seat of the car, "a small confession about how I got this reservation.""You said your father pulled strings.""My father is the strings." She grinned. "The Beta of Red Moon has kept confidential VIP identities at luxury hotels and restaurants across the continent for thirty years. Security work — safe rooms for the Alpha family when they travel, tables no one can trace. Prandi has exactly two private suites overlooking the main dining hall. Both are permanently reserved for people who officially don't exist." She waved her phone. "Tonight, one of them is ours.""Your father frightens me," Ryker said with respect."He'd be flattered."The suite was worth the mystery. A private lift, a paneled room above the main floor, and one long window of tinted glass looking down over the dining hall — the whole glittering room below us, while no one below could see in. A table set for six. My mother inspected everythin

  • The Ex-Luna's Return: No Longer His Doormat   ~ 16: Exclusive Room

~ 16~ Mia ~My mother held me at the foot of the car steps for a long time, one hand cradling the back of my head like I was still small."Let me look at you." She pulled back and scanned my face the way she had at every visit for four years — checking, always checking, that I was still real. Then her brow creased. "You're pale. And your wolf is standing guard. What happened?"Nothing got past her. It never had."Let's get in. It's cold.""Liliana.""In the car, Mama. Please."The manor drive was long, and the three of us settled in for the short ride up. Ryker sat across from me, watching my face with the same question written on his."That vehicle we passed at the gate," my mother said, before the doors had even finished closing. "The one with the old woman. You went stiff the moment it stopped. Who was she?"There was no point softening it."Darian's mother. My former mother-in-law."The car went quiet."She stopped to have the guards question me. She thought I looked suspicious,

  • The Ex-Luna's Return: No Longer His Doormat   ~ 15: Under the Hood

~ 15~ Mia ~The SUV slowed as it drew level with the manor gates, and the rear window was already half down.Silver hair, pinned the exact same way it had been pinned every day for eight years. Pearl earrings. The sharp profile I used to watch across a breakfast table while she listed my failures. My former mother-in-law.Of course. Darian's mother had always used the Alpha's first car when he didn't need it. She'd enjoyed the way pack members straightened their backs when EL-1 rolled past.I pulled my hood up and lowered my head.My scent wouldn't betray me — no wolf's nose in East Lake would know me now. But scent had never been her weapon. Her weapon was watching. Eight years of studying my face from across that table, cataloguing every flaw in it out loud. Of everyone in this territory, she was one of the very few who might see through four years of change. And she was ten meters away."Keep talking to me," I murmured. "Casually."Hailey shifted, angling her body between me and t
