Maya has been trying to cheer me up. We sat next to each other on the couch with a blanket over both of us. She kept talking, saying that it would sort out. That Alex was angry and stupid and would come back once he cooled down. That he's just stubborn but I wasn't listening.
I had the phone in both hands. I dialed again. Voicemail. Again. Voicemail.
“Anna. Put it down for five minutes.”
“I just need to know where he is.”
“He’s at Daniel’s. He needs to get his thoughts together.Calling him twenty times won’t change anything”
My eyes welled up with unshed tears. I refuse to let them fall. I've cried enough for today. I sighed heavily and dropped my phone.
“You're right he'll call me back" I said but I wasn't sure I believed it.
Maya nodded then pulled me in for a hug.
" Can you try and remember what happened yesterday” she asked me
" I have tried but I can't. I don't know how I ended up with Juan. It just doesn't make sense”
" Do you think this is a set up,is there anyone you suspect?”
I laid my head on my arms and shook my head. No one comes to my mind no matter how hard I think about it.
“Let's just forget about it.”
The phone buzzed on the table.
I grabbed it so fast I almost dropped it. My heart jumped, maybe it was Alex, maybe he has realized that he made a mistake, maybe he wanted to fix things but I was wrong.
I looked at the screen and my heart dropped. It wasn't Alex, it was a message from an unknown number. I opened it and instantly I wished I didn't.
It was a picture of Alex on a bed, Shirt open with girl on top of him, bare, hair over her face, his hand on her hip. It was obvious that they were having sex. Maya saw my face change. She took the phone from my hands before I could stop her. Immediately she saw the picture she gasped.
“Oh my God. That fucking asshole”
She looked at me
“Anna…”
I didn’t answer. The tears came hard and fast. I let them for a minute. Then I wiped my face with both hands until my skin felt raw.
“I’m done,” I said. My voice sounded flat. “I’m not crying for him again.”
Maya reached for me but I stood up before she could. I went to the bedroom pulled a suitcase from the closet and started filling it. Clothes, shoes, everything that belonged to me
Maya followed me into the bedroom and helped me. After zipping the suitcase I looked around at the place I once called home. I fought back the tears that threatened to come out.
Maya stood in the room, hers arms on her hips.
“Come to my place,” she said. “You don’t have to do this alone. Just stay with me tonight. As long as you need.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t want to bother you.”
“You’re not bothering me. That’s what I’m here for.”
“I know. I just… I need to be by myself right now.”
“Where would you go?" She asked
I also did not know where I'll go but I could not tell her that
“I have enough money to find a place. I will sort myself out"
She looked like she wanted to argue. She didn’t.
“Okay,” she said quietly. “But call me when you get wherever you’re going. And the door’s open if you change your mind.”
I nodded, I couldn't leave without saying anything so I left a note on the table. I took my car keys and the suitcase. Maya walked out with me.
"Thank you so much, you've been a great friend" I whispered
“Call me when you have settled” she said. Then she hugged me one last time.
I nodded even though I didn’t mean it.
I went to my car, put the suitcase in the back, and sat behind the wheel. For a second I looked at the phone in my hand. Then I held the power button until the screen went black. I opened the door again, stepped out, and threw the phone into the bushes by the curb.
I didn’t want to hear from him. I didn’t want to hear from anyone. I got back in, started the engine, and drove away.
AnnaThree years. That was how long it had been since I last saw Alex.Three years since our divorce.I hadn't been the one to hand him the papers. I had sent someone else to deliver them, and after that, I disappeared from his life completely. I hadn't heard from him. I hadn't seen him since the night he walked out.Not even my best friend. Sometimes, I felt guilty about that. She deserved better from me. But I needed a fresh start, I wanted a life where nobody knew me, where I didn't have to explain myself or answer to anyone. The same day I sent someone to deliver the divorce papers to Alex, I also sent someone to deliver a letter to her. In it, I told her that I was sorry for leaving without saying goodbye, I told her I wanted to start over to build a new life. I didn't know how long it would take, but I promised myself that when the time was right, I would come back for her.In those three years, I had changed. Zeke had kept his promise. He gave me everything and I had built myse
AnnaI was still on the main road when a black car cut in front of me and stopped.I hit the brakes hard. My heart slammed once against my ribs. For a second I thought we were going to hit but we stopped inches apart in the middle of the road.I glared at the car through my windshield. Was the earth testing me today? I got down to yell at whoever was in the car but a man also got down and walked towards me. He was dressed in a tailored suit and he looked handsome. He stopped inches in front of me. “Are you drunk?" I asked him angrily“Get in" he ordered Oh he's definitely drunk“I'm sorry who do you think you are, you can't just ask me to get in the car after the almost killing me” I glared at himHe massaged his temples and tilted his head back. “I need to talk to you and I don't have all day" he said with a clenched jawI gave him a polite but not genuine smile " Well I don't want to talk to you so get your car off the road” I didn't wait for his reply, I turned my back to him

AlexI didn’t go to my brother’s.I drove to Juan’s.I drove past the speed limit but I didn't care. My hands hurt from how hard I was holding the wheel. My best friend I kept seeing her face every where I turned. I almost believed her. What a fool I would have been. I hated the fact that even after everything I'm still worried about her, I wanted to gather her up in my arms earlier. It took a lot of restraint for me to stop. I shouldn't care about her but I can't bring myself to stop. I could not stop thinking about it. My best friend and my wife.“You piece of shit,” I said, and I didn’t know if It was for him or me for taking so long to see it.I turned onto his street too fast. His porch light was on. His car was in the driveway. Good. My phone rang but I could not bring myself to answer it. I parked across from the house then I got out and went straight to his door. I knocked hard enough that the door shook. “Juan,” I yelled. “Open the fucking door. Now.”The door opened. Jua
Anna“You slept with my best friend!”My entire body trembled.Alex had never raised his voice at me. Not once in the four years we had been married. I had heard him angry, frustrated, even annoyed, but never like this.I swallowed, trying to hold myself together.“I swear to you, I didn’t sleep with him.”A cold laugh escaped him.He stared at me, his nose scrunching in disgust.“Do you think I’m stupid?” he asked. “Someone sent me a picture of you two in a hotel room. You were both naked, Anna. You disgust me.Tears blurred my vision.“I don’t understand what happened. I just woke up on the bed with him”“Are you even listening to yourself”“I’m telling you the truth.” My voice shook. “All I remember is going out for a cup of coffee. I don’t know how I ended up in that hotel room with Juan.”Alex stepped closer and grabbed my wrist.“Alex, you’re hurting me.”“And I’m supposed to feel sorry for you?” His grip tightened for a second before he let go. “You’re the only one hurting peop
