Anna

Three years.

That was how long it had been since I last saw Alex.

Three years since our divorce.

I hadn't been the one to hand him the papers. I had sent someone else to deliver them, and after that, I disappeared from his life completely. I hadn't heard from him. I hadn't seen him since the night he walked out.

Not even my best friend. Sometimes, I felt guilty about that. She deserved better from me. But I needed a fresh start, I wanted a life where nobody knew me, where I didn't have to explain myself or answer to anyone.

The same day I sent someone to deliver the divorce papers to Alex, I also sent someone to deliver a letter to her. In it, I told her that I was sorry for leaving without saying goodbye, I told her I wanted to start over to build a new life. I didn't know how long it would take, but I promised myself that when the time was right, I would come back for her.

In those three years, I had changed. Zeke had kept his promise. He gave me everything and  I had built myself into someone Alex would never recognize and now, I was one step closer to destroying him.

I stood in front of my mirror, adjusting the sleeve of my blazer before looking at my reflection. I barely recognized the woman staring back at me.

Three years ago, I had been desperate to be believed, desperate for his love but not anymore. Now I am more powerful, more powerful than I ever imagined I could be.

I picked up my handbag from the table and checked the time.I had a meeting to attend. I slipped on my heels and walked out of my room, making my way downstairs. My driver was already waiting outside.

Zeke wasn't around. He was rarely home anyway, always coming and going as he pleased. His absence gave me the space I needed.

“Good morning, ma'am,” he greeted as I approached the car.

“Good morning.”

He opened the door for me, and I got in. As the car pulled away from the house, I leaned back against the seat and looked out through the window.

Zeke and I weren't exactly close but we understood each othe and that was enough. He was my fiancé now, yet there were still so many things I didn't know about him.

I still didn't know who he really was. I didn't know why he had chosen to help me and whenever I asked, he simply told me that I would understand when the time was right. I had stopped asking.

The car eventually slowed to a stop. I got out and looked at the building in front of me.

Alex's company.

The last time I had walked into this company, I had been Alex's wife. I had come here to see my husband, never imagining that three years later, I would be returning for an entirely different reason.

This time, I wasn't here as his wife. I was here as a business partner. His company was working with mine on a new project, and today, we were meeting to finalize the contract and discuss the details.

I had no idea what awaited me inside and Alex had no idea that the woman coming to his company for today's meeting was the very same woman he had once thrown away.

I pushed open the conference room door and stepped inside. The room was already occupied, and almost immediately, everyone's attention turned toward me.

“I'm so sorry for being late,” I said.

A few people nodded and returned their attention to the documents in front of them.

Across the room, Alex's head slowly lifted. I knew He had heard my voice, his eyes searched the room until they found me. His eyes widened, and he blinked rapidly, as if trying to make sure I wasn't a ghost.

Seeing him again brought back memories I had tried so hard to bury both the good and the bad. For a moment, they came rushing back, but I quickly suppressed them, refusing to let the past take control of me again.

“Anna?”

He stood up and slowly moved towards me.

As he came closer, I noticed how badly he looked. He looked tired, worn out, almost like life had taken something out of him. For a brief moment, seeing him like that stirred something in me.

I stared at him for a moment, searching the face I once knew so well. So much had changed, yet somehow, I still recognized him. Whatever feeling of empathy I had toward him, I brushed it aside and pushed it out of my mind. The Alex I knew died three years ago.

I walked past him and took my seat. Just as I settled back, I turned to look at him again. I slowly raised my right hand, letting the engagement ring on my finger catch his attention.

I kept my face calm and steady.

“It’s Mrs. Trusova to you.”

AnnaI was still on the main road when a black car cut in front of me and stopped.I hit the brakes hard. My heart slammed once against my ribs. For a second I thought we were going to hit but we stopped inches apart in the middle of the road.I glared at the car through my windshield. Was the earth testing me today? I got down to yell at whoever was in the car but a man also got down and walked towards me. He was dressed in a tailored suit and he looked handsome. He stopped inches in front of me. “Are you drunk?" I asked him angrily“Get in" he ordered Oh he's definitely drunk“I'm sorry who do you think you are, you can't just ask me to get in the car after the almost killing me” I glared at himHe massaged his temples and tilted his head back. “I need to talk to you and I don't have all day" he said with a clenched jawI gave him a polite but not genuine smile " Well I don't want to talk to you so get your car off the road” I didn't wait for his reply, I turned my back to him

AnnaMaya has been trying to cheer me up. We sat next to each other on the couch with a blanket over both of us. She kept talking, saying that it would sort out. That Alex was angry and stupid and would come back once he cooled down. That he's just stubborn but I wasn't listening.I had the phone in both hands. I dialed again. Voicemail. Again. Voicemail. “Anna. Put it down for five minutes.”“I just need to know where he is.”“He’s at Daniel’s. He needs to get his thoughts together.Calling him twenty times won’t change anything” My eyes welled up with unshed tears. I refuse to let them fall. I've cried enough for today. I sighed heavily and dropped my phone.“You're right he'll call me back" I said but I wasn't sure I believed it.Maya nodded then pulled me in for a hug." Can you try and remember what happened yesterday” she asked me" I have tried but I can't. I don't know how I ended up with Juan. It just doesn't make sense” " Do you think this is a set up,is there anyone you

AlexI didn’t go to my brother’s.I drove to Juan’s.I drove past the speed limit but I didn't care. My hands hurt from how hard I was holding the wheel. My best friend I kept seeing her face every where I turned. I almost believed her. What a fool I would have been. I hated the fact that even after everything I'm still worried about her, I wanted to gather her up in my arms earlier. It took a lot of restraint for me to stop. I shouldn't care about her but I can't bring myself to stop. I could not stop thinking about it. My best friend and my wife.“You piece of shit,” I said, and I didn’t know if It was for him or me for taking so long to see it.I turned onto his street too fast. His porch light was on. His car was in the driveway. Good. My phone rang but I could not bring myself to answer it. I parked across from the house then I got out and went straight to his door. I knocked hard enough that the door shook. “Juan,” I yelled. “Open the fucking door. Now.”The door opened. Jua

Anna“You slept with my best friend!”My entire body trembled.Alex had never raised his voice at me. Not once in the four years we had been married. I had heard him angry, frustrated, even annoyed, but never like this.I swallowed, trying to hold myself together.“I swear to you, I didn’t sleep with him.”A cold laugh escaped him.He stared at me, his nose scrunching in disgust.“Do you think I’m stupid?” he asked. “Someone sent me a picture of you two in a hotel room. You were both naked, Anna. You disgust me.Tears blurred my vision.“I don’t understand what happened. I just woke up on the bed with him”“Are you even listening to yourself”“I’m telling you the truth.” My voice shook. “All I remember is going out for a cup of coffee. I don’t know how I ended up in that hotel room with Juan.”Alex stepped closer and grabbed my wrist.“Alex, you’re hurting me.”“And I’m supposed to feel sorry for you?” His grip tightened for a second before he let go. “You’re the only one hurting peop
