DANIEL

I watched her pretend she was okay with what I just said. She dared to deceive me, nobody gets away with deceiving me, not now or ever.

I would never fall for such a clumsy trick, I pondered hard on why I fell for it but I couldn't hold on to a strong reason. "Could it be the stress from work?" I asked myself. My normal self would have caught on to such a trick even before it started. I didn't rise to this level by being so clumsy.

I admit I let my guards down due to mental stress and I ended up with a stranger posing as my wife. But I will not just let it go like it never happened. I will make sure they all pay for what they did and I am starting with the fake wife herself.

FEW HOURS EARLIER

It's only a matter of time before Anthony reports his findings to me. I had asked him to find everything there was about her and report it to me. I want to know who dared to play a fast one on me. They might have thought I'm as dumb as they are.

F*ck! I'm so pissed at myself, for not seeing the signs or for seeing and ignoring them. I looked past the bride not unveiling in the church and I also overlooked the kissing because I wasn't fully involved with the bride.

I wouldn't have thought it was a scheme to deceive me. All I have to do now is wait patiently for Anthony. I know all I want about Lewis and his family, but I need to make deep findings about the fake lady.

.

I got off the phone with Anthony, he'd be in my house soon. I paced around the waiting room, anger written all over my face. All the time I spoke to Anthony about making the findings, she locked herself in the bathroom. I did not have to bother tearing down the door, I could sense the fear in her already.

I spoke through my teeth "They will pay for this. No, they must pay for this".

I heard a knock on the door, I didn't need to ask who it was, "Come in" I answered. I like how fast Anthony does his job, it's only been a few minutes and he was here.

Anthony walked in smartly and unbuttoned his blazer as he handed over the files he gathered. I do not have the time to go through them.

"Tell me the important things you discovered, I will go through the files later".

I dipped my hands in my pocket, I listened with all attentiveness as he explained briefly in detail.

Anthony cleared his throat and replied, "Her name is Anna Ricks, she works at Urban Grind cafe and is a part-time student in the community college. She currently has a debt to pay back, a total of $60,000".

He took a pause and looked at me while I signalled with a hand for him to continue.

"According to the agreement between her and Daisy, she's been paid $30,000 upfront and she would only get the balance if you annul the marriage".

He told me the other things I should know and left the document while I dismissed him.

He turned to leave, and as he was about to open the door, he turned around to tell me Mr Lewis was planning to fly Daisy out of the country anytime soon to avoid backfires.

"I thought you should know", he finished off and left.

I finally understood what was going on, Anna was stranded. I have her perfectly in my palm while I deal with the Lewis later.

My mind jolted to the day I bought a cup of coffee at Urban Grind cafe, she was the lady who sent chills down my spine. I wouldn't just let her go until I found my reasons.

PRESENT TIME

While I waited patiently for her to come out of the bathroom, I reached a decision that I would make her work for me.

She came out about forty-five minutes after I entered the room again. As expected, she tried to buy me into annulling the marriage. I hate deceit, I wouldn't let things go like it never happened.

I watched her try to convince me, but I'm a man of my word. She twisted her fingers, she looked down and weary. It was as if a cross was resting on her shoulders.

"Look, I know you did this to clear a debt and your life is on the line if you do not meet the deadline", I then walked up to her and looked straight into her eyes.

"Daisy can only give you the balance if we divorce, but I won't agree to that".

I watched her look devasted immediately, she looked so innocent.

"I'll ask you a question now Anna Ricks, would you rather work for me and I help you  clear off the debt forever or you prefer to stay married to this total stranger without balance?" I asked her confidently.

I noticed her trying to come up with a point to tackle me, she opened her mouth but words failed her. I smirked slightly, she had no choice.

I had this feeling to keep her close. My body hair stood each time I remember when she handed me the coffee and my hand brushed hers. There is this atmosphere I feel around her that I can't fathom.

Nevertheless, I refused to lose focus on letting her know she messed with the wrong person. After all, it might be lust like I've had for some very few ladies in the past.

I dished out my offer, it was her turn to give her response.

She would be with me either way, I'm a businessman and I know how to make my prospects succumb.

"What is the job you have for me", her voice shivering.

"It can be very simple if you do it right" I answered and took a sip of water.

"But first, we need to sign a contract".

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 16

ANNAI walked faster, I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't hasten my steps. I do not know anybody here and the voice doesn't seem to sound like Anthony’s. “Hey!”, I heard again, this time around, my heart skipped two beats and I stopped to look behind me. Behind the blonde lady I saw in the exchange room earlier was a man who seemed to be in his thirties. He stood at about 5’7 feet, broad shoulders and toned arms bulging out of the tight T-shirt he wore which signified he worked out regularly. He approached me, and the more he got nearer, the more I was able to catch on his looks. He has a strong jawline and a fair skin tone that harboured his full beard and moustache. Each stamp of his foot on the grass was like a war between his boots and the poor grass that bent beneath his steps. “Do you not hear been called?”, he questioned, maintaining a straight face while the blonde lady walked up to us. “I.. I… I didn't hear my…my name”, words almost failed me as I replied. He mimick

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 15

ANNAThe Anthony never included that we would go further than where I stood, if I went with the man, how would he see me from afar? I walked slowly behind him, counting my steps as I did.“S…sir…sir”, I stammered as I tried to call his attention. He turned back abruptly, “What is it!”, his voice loud and scary. The little courage I had to call his attention flew out of the window, even though I needed to ask him where we were headed. “The… the instruction was to meet under… under the o… oak tree sir”. “This is why I don't like to work with newbies”, he lamented. “Just come with me and quit the stupid questions!”, he shouted at me, I wondered if he ever talked in a calm tone. I hastened my footsteps to catch up with the margin between us, I looked around in the hope that Anthony would keep with his promise. We walked for a few minutes in the bush, there were footstep trails everywhere we passed which meant only one thing, it was a regular path. I followed him quietly this time ar

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 14

ANNAMy body stiffened, just as if cold blood rushed down my spine at the utterance of his words. I was moving from frying pan to fire, messing up the deal with a stranger is as bad enough as it could be, but coming back home to tell Daniel would be worse. I swallowed hard, my throat dry like a desert although I tried not to show it, but my facial expression would have given me up. With the little strength in me, “I will try my best according to what Anthony has taught me”, I replied, twisting my fingers badly, I had never been this nervous. He chuckled lightly, raising a glass at me like he wanted to cheer me, “Good girl. You better not, off you go”. What was I expecting, after all, he was about to make a huge amount of money, and it is normal for him to be happy about it. I started to imagine different scenarios in my head as I walked towards the door, “What if, what if, just what if it goes wrong, would that be the end of me? Would Daniel try to avenge me?”, my thoughts collided

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 13

ANNAHow cruel could he be to start sending me on missions that could end my life? I keep seeing more reasons Daisy saved herself from hell and pushed me into this lion's den. But can I blame her? I blame my mother who wouldn't stop disappointing me. If she hadn't owed the loan sharks money, I wouldn't have been lured into this because I needed money. Fine, he paid off the debt I had left, but it doesn't warrant that he put me in such a tight position. Daniel Matt has no heart for sympathy. Hot tears flowed down my cheeks, I have not cried this much ever since I lost my father. I felt like I could die at any time without fulfilling my dreams. ……. I watched the sunrise on a Sunday morning, nature is indeed beautiful. For a moment, I forgot my dilemma and just enjoyed the nice view in front of me. A hunger pang struck in my stomach that made me realize I needed to eat. I'm sure Ray would have prepared several meals and snacks since he takes the weekend of

DANIELAnna would not stop sulking, it infuriated me. She should have thought about it before messing with a man like me. I am Daniel Matt, nobody makes a fool out of me and goes scot-free, absolutely nobody! Anger clouded my eyes and ran through my blood, I was bent on taking revenge on her for playing with my intelligence. Mr Lewis was not left out either, I was only postponing his punishment till I knew the perfect time to strike him. I had Anna at the tip of my fingers now, at least for the next year. I recently paid the loan sharks she owed the outstanding balance, leaving her to fully depend on me for money. “How dangerous could it be”, her voice so low that I barely heard her. “Dangerous enough that you could get killed”, I answered her coldly. I am doing her a big favour by letting her stay and work with me. The loan shark would have killed her either way if she refused to pay her debt. I further reminded her that Anthony would put her through the procedures. They were s

  • The Fake Bride   Chapter Eleven

DANIELI watched her descend the stairs, she shone in the green dress. The dress embraced her curves and her cleavage slightly opened looking firm. The pieces of jewellery blended with her skin tone, she perfectly matched someone I could use as a wife in my outings. I had told Anthony to get her a dress for the bidding party I had that evening, I didn't expect he would go all out to get a fine dress. Was it the dress or Anna? All I know is she looks good, and that is all that there is to it. She was just the perfect person for the job, her face and body would benefit me and I cannot wait to start making cool money with her. If you know me from afar, you would know me to be a master investor. Even the Bible says man shall not live with bread alone. But I do something else and cover up with the investment company. I get money from there, but the thread that moves the needle is my other job. I supply ammunition to top officials, countries facing war, drug dealers and whoever needs m
