My eyes sprung open, only then did I realize it was a dream. Although the chances of this dream coming to pass are high.
I yawned as I rolled over to the edge of the bed and I picked up my phone, I had gotten a message that gave me clarity that my nightmare would soon come to pass.
The message was from the loan sharks my mother had borrowed money from, a threatening message at that, the content of the message contained things they would do to me if I didn't meet the deadline.
I dropped my phone, cupped my face in my hands and I let out a loud sigh. What did I ever do to be birthed to someone like my mother?
I have always felt out of place and unlucky ever since I was born. My father worked as a security guard, he lived his life as best as he could, although he had his faults. He sometimes came home drunk or ran into debts sometimes, only later did I realise it was to keep up with the mounting bills.
He died in a motorbike hit-and-run accident, an autopsy proved he was drunk so the case was closed quickly. My dad wasn't the best anyone could ask for, but he did make sacrifices for me and my mum. He would help with my school fees whenever he won his gamble and also buy fashion items for my mother. The little he did made me wonder if he would have been a better version of himself if he had been rich or if he didn't drink on the particular day he had an accident. I sometimes think the death case wasn't fair enough, but there was little a poor person could do. taken the self-improvement counsel seriously.
I would rather choose my father over my mother a hundred times if I had the chance. All my mother knows to do is to cause a ruckus, more than my father did. I often reminisced on how tough growing up was, I've never had anyone truly care about me.
I lost my father at the age of sixteen and my life has been from frying pan to fire ever since. My mother would always drink and gamble into debts I had to settle from the menial jobs paid at such as young age.
I thought I had seen it all after I managed to finish my high school education, my mum broke it to me that she would be getting remarried and would leave town.
I didn't know how to feel after I heard it, a part of me wanted her gone because she had always been trouble, while a part of me reminded me she was the only family I had left. My opinion didn't matter to her, she got married and fled with her new husband, Derrick. She left me with her debts to settle as the creditors would not stop pestering me.
Times have passed slowly, it's been seven years since I last saw my mother, I was almost getting over her absence until a few months ago when I received a call. I just knew my mother had done it again, she gave out my information as the guarantor to pay her debt if she couldn't.
The loan sharks proved unreasonable as they started threatening me to pay up the money within a short period. I rose from the bed, walked to my window and drew the curtains,
"What the hell did mum do with fifty thousand dollars, how am I supposed to pay it back", I mumbled to myself.
I have been working in a five-star cafe for two years now, it's the longest I've been at a job. Although I served wealthy people, my pay was peanuts compared to how fancy the cafe was painted to be. I do have a cheerful personality which made it easy for me to get tips from regular customers.
"Do I ask a customer for help?", I asked myself as I stepped out of the bathroom but I cancelled the thought immediately. It took me quite some time to get this job through a friend, I could be fired immediately if I'm caught doing such a thing and I wouldn't risk being sacked for something like that.
I slid into my black fitted pants, tucked in a rose pink top and paired it with a black flat shoe. I've never really bothered about high-heeled shoes because of my height, I am 5'9 and it has always been admirable.
I have always preferred to change into work outfits at the cafe, my neighbours would think I get a high pay if they found out I work in a five-star cafe.
I packed my hair in a ponytail and smacked my lips to rub in my gloss. I looked at myself in the mirror, my light blue eyes shone brightly, and my well set of teeth revealed as I smiled brightly at the mirror and admired my beauty.
I've had a few clients tell me I am beautiful, some would even say I could pass for a model. I rarely did makeup which makes the flatter more appealing.
I did a quick turn in front of the mirror, the pant is one of my favourites for a reason because they show and define my curves and long legs, my bust was just the perfect size every lady would ask for.
The thought of the loan sharks is heavy on my mind, I haven't been able to think of a particular way out of this mess, the deadline is getting nearer, and different thoughts came to my mind but I just brushed it off and headed to work.
I had about ten minutes to check out of my shift, a tall man in a suit walked in and I knew he'd be my last client for the night. I attended to his order, I went to the changing room to change my outfit.
I snapped my neck and stretched my hands to relieve the joint pains from standing and working all day.
I grabbed my bag and walked out of the cafe, my phone buzzed, and I swiped up to check my notification. The message was from my mother's creditors, "You have just two weeks left, or you are going to have your organs out of you".
ANNAI walked faster, I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't hasten my steps. I do not know anybody here and the voice doesn't seem to sound like Anthony’s. “Hey!”, I heard again, this time around, my heart skipped two beats and I stopped to look behind me. Behind the blonde lady I saw in the exchange room earlier was a man who seemed to be in his thirties. He stood at about 5’7 feet, broad shoulders and toned arms bulging out of the tight T-shirt he wore which signified he worked out regularly. He approached me, and the more he got nearer, the more I was able to catch on his looks. He has a strong jawline and a fair skin tone that harboured his full beard and moustache. Each stamp of his foot on the grass was like a war between his boots and the poor grass that bent beneath his steps. “Do you not hear been called?”, he questioned, maintaining a straight face while the blonde lady walked up to us. “I.. I… I didn't hear my…my name”, words almost failed me as I replied. He mimick
ANNAThe Anthony never included that we would go further than where I stood, if I went with the man, how would he see me from afar? I walked slowly behind him, counting my steps as I did.“S…sir…sir”, I stammered as I tried to call his attention. He turned back abruptly, “What is it!”, his voice loud and scary. The little courage I had to call his attention flew out of the window, even though I needed to ask him where we were headed. “The… the instruction was to meet under… under the o… oak tree sir”. “This is why I don't like to work with newbies”, he lamented. “Just come with me and quit the stupid questions!”, he shouted at me, I wondered if he ever talked in a calm tone. I hastened my footsteps to catch up with the margin between us, I looked around in the hope that Anthony would keep with his promise. We walked for a few minutes in the bush, there were footstep trails everywhere we passed which meant only one thing, it was a regular path. I followed him quietly this time ar
ANNAMy body stiffened, just as if cold blood rushed down my spine at the utterance of his words. I was moving from frying pan to fire, messing up the deal with a stranger is as bad enough as it could be, but coming back home to tell Daniel would be worse. I swallowed hard, my throat dry like a desert although I tried not to show it, but my facial expression would have given me up. With the little strength in me, “I will try my best according to what Anthony has taught me”, I replied, twisting my fingers badly, I had never been this nervous. He chuckled lightly, raising a glass at me like he wanted to cheer me, “Good girl. You better not, off you go”. What was I expecting, after all, he was about to make a huge amount of money, and it is normal for him to be happy about it. I started to imagine different scenarios in my head as I walked towards the door, “What if, what if, just what if it goes wrong, would that be the end of me? Would Daniel try to avenge me?”, my thoughts collided
ANNAHow cruel could he be to start sending me on missions that could end my life? I keep seeing more reasons Daisy saved herself from hell and pushed me into this lion's den. But can I blame her? I blame my mother who wouldn't stop disappointing me. If she hadn't owed the loan sharks money, I wouldn't have been lured into this because I needed money. Fine, he paid off the debt I had left, but it doesn't warrant that he put me in such a tight position. Daniel Matt has no heart for sympathy. Hot tears flowed down my cheeks, I have not cried this much ever since I lost my father. I felt like I could die at any time without fulfilling my dreams. ……. I watched the sunrise on a Sunday morning, nature is indeed beautiful. For a moment, I forgot my dilemma and just enjoyed the nice view in front of me. A hunger pang struck in my stomach that made me realize I needed to eat. I'm sure Ray would have prepared several meals and snacks since he takes the weekend of
DANIELAnna would not stop sulking, it infuriated me. She should have thought about it before messing with a man like me. I am Daniel Matt, nobody makes a fool out of me and goes scot-free, absolutely nobody! Anger clouded my eyes and ran through my blood, I was bent on taking revenge on her for playing with my intelligence. Mr Lewis was not left out either, I was only postponing his punishment till I knew the perfect time to strike him. I had Anna at the tip of my fingers now, at least for the next year. I recently paid the loan sharks she owed the outstanding balance, leaving her to fully depend on me for money. “How dangerous could it be”, her voice so low that I barely heard her. “Dangerous enough that you could get killed”, I answered her coldly. I am doing her a big favour by letting her stay and work with me. The loan shark would have killed her either way if she refused to pay her debt. I further reminded her that Anthony would put her through the procedures. They were s
DANIELI watched her descend the stairs, she shone in the green dress. The dress embraced her curves and her cleavage slightly opened looking firm. The pieces of jewellery blended with her skin tone, she perfectly matched someone I could use as a wife in my outings. I had told Anthony to get her a dress for the bidding party I had that evening, I didn't expect he would go all out to get a fine dress. Was it the dress or Anna? All I know is she looks good, and that is all that there is to it. She was just the perfect person for the job, her face and body would benefit me and I cannot wait to start making cool money with her. If you know me from afar, you would know me to be a master investor. Even the Bible says man shall not live with bread alone. But I do something else and cover up with the investment company. I get money from there, but the thread that moves the needle is my other job. I supply ammunition to top officials, countries facing war, drug dealers and whoever needs m
