Chapter 1

I was holding a glass of milk when my hand paused midair. Several texts had popped up one after the other.

[Is that dumb woman making you dinner? My wife doesn't treat me that way anymore and keeps asking for a divorce instead.]

[That's why we shouldn't marry smart women. We should marry women like Maisie Stratford who are obedient and know their place.]

[Don't be jealous. Sam is such a professional. He acts as if he is super broke, prompting his wife to go as far as to pick up leftover vegetables at the market for free. It’s a pity he can't be nominated as a best actor with acting chops like his.]

Maisie Stratford knew her place and picked up leftover vegetables at the market...

I lowered my eyes to look at my sweater, which was frayed and worn. There were even holes in my sleeves.

It was true that I went to the market last month to pick up leftover vegetables. It was because Sam told me that his company had not paid him in three months and, after calculating every cent I had, it was still not enough to pay our rent.

I put down my glass of milk and picked up Sam's phone. His password was my birthday, and he had specially set it up in front of me, sure that I would never check his phone. If I had not seen his texts by accident, I would never have looked into his phone.

The chat group was called 'The Fake Broke Challenge Committee', and I tapped to bring it up. There were seven members in total, and I started to scroll through the chat history. They had a shared file called 'The Fake Broke Challenge Rules'.

I clicked on the file.

The first rule stated that if the woman suggested she would become the family's breadwinner, the challenger would gain 50 points. All I could hear was ringing in my ears.

During the first winter of our marriage, Sam was sitting on the sofa, looking ashamed as he told me that his company was about to go bankrupt. I held his hand and comforted him by telling him that I would take care of him financially.

Sam buried his face in my palms as his shoulders quivered. I thought he was crying, but now that I think about it, he must have been laughing instead.

The second rule stated that if the woman was willing to give up their career or an opportunity to be promoted at work, the challenger would gain 50 points.

During the second year of our marriage, I had an opportunity to be transferred and promoted to another location. My salary would have doubled and I would have had a bright future in my career.

I spent three sleepless nights filling out the application. I passed the interview and was announced as the chosen candidate.

That day, I bought some steaks and went home happily. Sam remained silent for a long time as his eyes turned red from trying not to cry. "What's going to happen to me if you leave for two years, Maisie? Are you leaving me behind?"

I withdrew my application the next day, and my superior looked at me in disappointment. "You're too focused on your love life, Maisie. This is a great opportunity. You'll regret it if you give it up."

The fifth rule stated that if the challenger pretended to be sick or got into a serious accident, and the woman refused to leave his side, no matter what, he would gain 50 points. There was a note in red on the side, 'Sam's wife used all her savings on him, an additional 20 points.'

Sam was in a car accident last year, and his medical bills, which included hospitalization, cost close to $15,000. That amount was my total savings, which I had saved up for years.

I was slightly hesitant, but Sam was sobbing while saying to me pitifully, "I'm so useless. I haven't even given you a good life, yet I’m already being a burden to you. I'd rather kill myself than make you suffer."

He wanted to jump off a building after that, and I paid his medical bill with my savings because I could not bear for him to lose his life.

The ninth rule stated that if the woman got an abortion, the challenger would gain 50 points.

At this point, my hands started to tremble. I had gotten pregnant six months ago, but Sam did not look happy when I shared the news with him. Instead, he looked troubled, and he banged his head against the wall.

I hugged him to calm him down, and he said with tears brimming in his eyes, "Our living conditions are so horrible right now. The baby would only suffer after being born. We should abort it rather than let our child suffer along with us.

However, I refused, but he continued to talk me into it. "Honey, we can have another child in the future."

I cried the entire night, and got the abortion the next day.

Sam waited for me outside the surgery room, and he put a coat over me. That coat was a birthday present I bought for him that cost $280 after discount.

When I gave him the present, he told me to return it because it was too expensive, but I refused because I felt that he was worth all the good things in life.

It turned out that, from his perspective, the one thing that was unworthy of anything was me.

I laughed. "So you're feeling sorry for yourself right now? And I should be grateful and accept you again in my life because of all these excuses you've been giving yourself?" I did not want to waste any more time with him and got straight to the point."The $1 million you gave me was money I deserved for emotional damage. As for getting remarried, don't even think about it."Sam's breathing got heavier at the other end of the call. "Are you serious, Maisie?""I only have one thing to say to you, Sam. People like you are a waste of air when you're alive, and only cause pollution to the earth after you die.""Maisie, you…"Before he could finish his sentence, I hung up on him. Sam tried to call me multiple times after that, but I did not pick up any of his calls. When he could not get through, he started sending me texts continuously.[Maisie, I was wrong.][Please pick up the call. Let's meet and talk.][What do I need to do for you to forgive me?]I could not take it and fina

Sam leaned back onto the sofa and stared in a daze at the cracked ceiling. He had lived in this house for three years, but had never taken a close look at it. It was only now that he realized that there were water stains on the corners of the walls, the paint was peeling at the window, and the light on the ceiling could fall at any moment.Every time I came home, these were what I had seen, but I never once complained to Sam about them. This made Sam feel that he should have treated me better. He sat in a daze in the house for a long time before he started calling me.When I picked up his call, he said, "I'm back in the country, Maisie. I'm at home now. Where did you go? Did you move?" It was only when I heard his voice that I realized it was Sam. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"Sam cleared his throat. "Um… About getting remarried, we can still talk about it." Once he started the topic, it was not that difficult to continue. "Even though you were at fault for mentioning divorc

The news spread much quicker than I expected. Some of my close colleagues asked me discreetly, "Maisie, are we going to hear good news about you and Mr. Sellers soon? I think there's something about the way he looks at you."I was shocked. "That's not possible! I would believe you if you told me he looks at me with disdain, but not this. Besides, those are just rumors. Don't believe them."She gave me a knowing look instead. The following week, Shaun kept finding excuses to see me. It would be having coffee, requesting a report, asking about the budget, and buying me supper when I worked too late at night. The reasons he gave were stranger than the last, but none of them were repeated. My colleagues started to give me funny looks, and I heard them gossiping about me in the pantry."Did Maisie get together with Mr. Sellers right after she got a divorce? That's really fast." "Well, she knows her way around men. Why do you think she could become a supervisor so quickly from a low-l

My new office was on the 19th floor with a great view of the river. I spun around in my chair, feeling like I was dreaming, and I said to myself, "Sam must have been a jinx. The moment we got divorced, good things started happening to me."I laughed happily, and even danced and hummed a song. That was when my office door was suddenly pushed open, and I looked right into Shaun's eyes. It was really awkward, and I laughed drily, "Maybe you should knock first the next time before entering my office, Mr. Sellers." Shaun pointed at his ear. "I'm sorry, but you were singing so loud that it hurt my ears." My lips twitched, and I replied in a huff, "Then you should cover your ears."After that, I suddenly remembered that Shaun was not only my senior in university, but also my boss who recommended me for my current position, and I changed my attitude right away with a friendly smile.I pulled out a chair and said, "Please have a seat, Mr. Sellers. I'll get someone to make you a cup of c

The next day, outside the courthouse, Sam was late, and it took me three calls for him to finally arrive. The divorce process was quick as we affirmed our decision to be separated in front of the judge. Before our divorce was official, Sam suddenly said, "It's not too late to stop this if you regret your decision, Maisie."I ignored him and told the judge that my decision was final. Sam tugged at his tie and did the same with a dark look on his face. He acted as if he refused to back down from being challenged. After our divorce was final, I turned to leave, and Sam raised his voice behind me, "Three months. You'll come begging me after three months."I did not stop walking, and Sam watched as I vanished from his sight. He leaned back in his seat in the Maybach and frowned."Did she really agree to the divorce?" Edie's gleeful voice could be heard from the other end of the phone."Yes, she did.""She didn't create a scene over it?""No, she didn't."Edie was silent for severa

Sam was shocked. "Did you follow me?" he asked."If I didn't follow you, I wouldn't have known that I married a rich heir who is on his way to San Ava with his first love for a romantic getaway."Sam stood up suddenly and paced around the house before finally standing in front of me. "Since you found out the truth, there is no point in me hiding anything anymore. It's true that I pretended to be broke. "Edie is my first love, but my family refused to let us be together. They said she was not good enough for me and paid her $1 million to leave me. She took the money."I knew Sam too well, so I knew right away what he wanted to say next. "So, you found someone even poorer than Edie was to rebel against your family and show them your unhappiness, am I right?"He did not deny it. "But I'm not such a bad guy. I've been good to you in the last three years, haven't I? I didn't beat you or yell at you. I made sure you had food on the table…""Food on the table?" I repeated those words
