Chapter 2

Author: White Peach
I continued scrolling down and saw that Sam was in the lead on the challenge board with 470 points. He was more than 100 points ahead of second place. Someone in the group tagged him in a text.

[Sam, is there something wrong with your wife's brain? Any normal woman would have realized what's going on by now.]

He replied with just a few words. [She loves and trusts me.]

Someone started to tease Sam. [Are you going to tell us next that it's because you are irresistible to women?]

Sam replied with a shrugging emoji.

Everyone started laughing.

[By the way, it's Edie's birthday in two weeks. Isn't she back in the country? What surprise will you be planning for her this time, Sam?]

[Are you going to fill a cruise ship with flowers, or get her a limited edition item?]

[Or will you be taking her on a trip with you to San Ava?]

[What would your wife do if you left with Edie?]

Someone replied right away. [Sam will definitely give Edie a big surprise. Edie is the one who got away. He got married out of spite because Edie hurt him. As for Maisie, Sam will probably find a reason to divorce her eventually.]

My knuckles turned white as I gripped the phone tightly, but I continued scrolling.

[You're right. He doesn't love that woman. If he did, he wouldn't have made her suffer so much.]

[She's like Sam's personal lapdog. All he needs to do is beckon and she will run to him with her tail wagging.]

Sam had replied with indifference. [It's too mild to call her a lapdog. She's so consumed with love that it's like late-stage cancer. She can no longer be cured.]

His words punched a huge hole in my heart. I kept looking while trying to blink away my tears, but all I could see was the hanging light that looked like it could fall at any time.

Tears streamed down my face while I wondered why there was wind in the house, blowing sand into my eyes. I refused to admit that I was heartbroken.

I wiped my tears away and put the phone back where it was.

My warm milk had turned cold, and a layer of film had formed on the top. I suddenly felt nauseous, and I ran into the bathroom to throw up. I sat on the toilet for a long time, thinking about the three years I was married to him.

We did not have a wedding because he said we should save up to buy a house. We did not have our honeymoon because he said to wait until he had money, and that he would make it up to me.

Once, my mother came to visit me secretly, and I rode an old bike to pick her up. I even had to tie a hard cardboard to the back seat to make sure my mother would be comfortable leaning back. Her eyes brimmed with tears when she climbed onto the back of the bike.

That night, she held my hand and said, "You're leading a hard life, Maisie."

I insisted that my life was not hard because Sam was a good man.

A good man? I started laughing. I could see my pale face in the bathroom mirror, and I had dark circles under my eyes.

Three years ago, I weighed 110 pounds, but I was 86 pounds now. Sam insisted that I looked nice because I was skinny, but I was really suffering from malnutrition. I even passed out several times, scaring the lights out of my boss once from my part-time job. He stopped me from going to work after that.

I turned on the tap and washed my face. I saw the woman's eyes turn red in the mirror, and she slowly laughed self-deprecatingly.

Three years of my life were equivalent to 470 points to him. I had lived my life like a joke after getting married to him.

My phone in the living room rang, and I wiped my hands before walking out of the bathroom. My phone screen lit up and displayed my wallpaper. Sam and I were looking at the camera with happy smiles and gesturing a heart with our hands.

Anyone who saw that photo of us would think that we're an ordinary, happy husband and wife duo.

"Honey, I think I left my phone at home. I'll get a despatch to help pick it up."

The call was from Sam.

"You don't need to trouble anyone. I can deliver the phone to you."

Sam rejected my offer right away. "You don't need to do that!" He realized how unfriendly his tone was, and he softened it. "I just don't want you to exert yourself, Honey. You work several part time jobs a day, and I just hate myself for being useless and unable to give you a comfortable life."

He was doing it again. Sam would always say things like that whenever money was involved, but this time, I did not say any comforting words to him. "Why did you marry me if you knew that you couldn't give me a good life?"

"..." Sam was speechless.

I laughed. "So you're feeling sorry for yourself right now? And I should be grateful and accept you again in my life because of all these excuses you've been giving yourself?" I did not want to waste any more time with him and got straight to the point."The $1 million you gave me was money I deserved for emotional damage. As for getting remarried, don't even think about it."Sam's breathing got heavier at the other end of the call. "Are you serious, Maisie?""I only have one thing to say to you, Sam. People like you are a waste of air when you're alive, and only cause pollution to the earth after you die.""Maisie, you…"Before he could finish his sentence, I hung up on him. Sam tried to call me multiple times after that, but I did not pick up any of his calls. When he could not get through, he started sending me texts continuously.[Maisie, I was wrong.][Please pick up the call. Let's meet and talk.][What do I need to do for you to forgive me?]I could not take it and fina

Sam leaned back onto the sofa and stared in a daze at the cracked ceiling. He had lived in this house for three years, but had never taken a close look at it. It was only now that he realized that there were water stains on the corners of the walls, the paint was peeling at the window, and the light on the ceiling could fall at any moment.Every time I came home, these were what I had seen, but I never once complained to Sam about them. This made Sam feel that he should have treated me better. He sat in a daze in the house for a long time before he started calling me.When I picked up his call, he said, "I'm back in the country, Maisie. I'm at home now. Where did you go? Did you move?" It was only when I heard his voice that I realized it was Sam. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"Sam cleared his throat. "Um… About getting remarried, we can still talk about it." Once he started the topic, it was not that difficult to continue. "Even though you were at fault for mentioning divorc

The news spread much quicker than I expected. Some of my close colleagues asked me discreetly, "Maisie, are we going to hear good news about you and Mr. Sellers soon? I think there's something about the way he looks at you."I was shocked. "That's not possible! I would believe you if you told me he looks at me with disdain, but not this. Besides, those are just rumors. Don't believe them."She gave me a knowing look instead. The following week, Shaun kept finding excuses to see me. It would be having coffee, requesting a report, asking about the budget, and buying me supper when I worked too late at night. The reasons he gave were stranger than the last, but none of them were repeated. My colleagues started to give me funny looks, and I heard them gossiping about me in the pantry."Did Maisie get together with Mr. Sellers right after she got a divorce? That's really fast." "Well, she knows her way around men. Why do you think she could become a supervisor so quickly from a low-l

My new office was on the 19th floor with a great view of the river. I spun around in my chair, feeling like I was dreaming, and I said to myself, "Sam must have been a jinx. The moment we got divorced, good things started happening to me."I laughed happily, and even danced and hummed a song. That was when my office door was suddenly pushed open, and I looked right into Shaun's eyes. It was really awkward, and I laughed drily, "Maybe you should knock first the next time before entering my office, Mr. Sellers." Shaun pointed at his ear. "I'm sorry, but you were singing so loud that it hurt my ears." My lips twitched, and I replied in a huff, "Then you should cover your ears."After that, I suddenly remembered that Shaun was not only my senior in university, but also my boss who recommended me for my current position, and I changed my attitude right away with a friendly smile.I pulled out a chair and said, "Please have a seat, Mr. Sellers. I'll get someone to make you a cup of c

The next day, outside the courthouse, Sam was late, and it took me three calls for him to finally arrive. The divorce process was quick as we affirmed our decision to be separated in front of the judge. Before our divorce was official, Sam suddenly said, "It's not too late to stop this if you regret your decision, Maisie."I ignored him and told the judge that my decision was final. Sam tugged at his tie and did the same with a dark look on his face. He acted as if he refused to back down from being challenged. After our divorce was final, I turned to leave, and Sam raised his voice behind me, "Three months. You'll come begging me after three months."I did not stop walking, and Sam watched as I vanished from his sight. He leaned back in his seat in the Maybach and frowned."Did she really agree to the divorce?" Edie's gleeful voice could be heard from the other end of the phone."Yes, she did.""She didn't create a scene over it?""No, she didn't."Edie was silent for severa

Sam was shocked. "Did you follow me?" he asked."If I didn't follow you, I wouldn't have known that I married a rich heir who is on his way to San Ava with his first love for a romantic getaway."Sam stood up suddenly and paced around the house before finally standing in front of me. "Since you found out the truth, there is no point in me hiding anything anymore. It's true that I pretended to be broke. "Edie is my first love, but my family refused to let us be together. They said she was not good enough for me and paid her $1 million to leave me. She took the money."I knew Sam too well, so I knew right away what he wanted to say next. "So, you found someone even poorer than Edie was to rebel against your family and show them your unhappiness, am I right?"He did not deny it. "But I'm not such a bad guy. I've been good to you in the last three years, haven't I? I didn't beat you or yell at you. I made sure you had food on the table…""Food on the table?" I repeated those words
