Chapter 1

After being brought back, Lilian Roy just stood timidly in the middle of the living room.

It was on that day that I finished closing the MC deal. On the drive home, my assistant, May Cannon, told me that the Roy family had found their biological daughter.

My heart thumped wildly for a moment. Then it settled. I thought, “Since she’s back, then she’ll be taken care of. The Roy family isn’t exactly short on money.”

However, when I walked in looking polished, confident, and at the top of my game, all the fear she had been wearing melted into pure jealousy.

“If you want me to come back and take my place in this family, fine. But she’s had my life long enough. It’s time she gives it back. I don’t want anything else but the company.”

I smiled. “I’ve managed the family business for ten years. Are you sure you can handle it?”

The disdain in my tone was obvious. Lilian’s face flushed red. “I can learn. If I had grown up here too, I wouldn’t be any worse than you.”

The relatives chimed in. “Max, just give it to her. She’s the biological daughter, after all.”

Hearing that, I looked at my parents. My father, Jack Roy, spoke with difficulty. “Max, we owe her. Lily has had a very hard life all these years.”

My mother, Lauren Roy, held Lilian and cried uncontrollably. “Those traffickers forced her to marry an old man. If we hadn’t found her, Lily would already… Max, just agree. I won’t treat you unfairly.”

I looked at them and smiled. “Okay.”

I agreed and began the handover with them.

I thought that my family finding their biological daughter could happen without any problem; I always intended to keep my head down and do my job. Competing with her never even crossed my mind.

I even felt sorry for her. I had already ordered a welcome gift.

I did not expect things to turn out like this after she returned.

Compensation? Fine. Take it all.

I had May draw up the transition paperwork on the spot. I signed every page and handed the company over to Lilian. With the company now in her hands, Lilian grew visibly excited and threw herself into our mother’s arms.

I took a deep breath. “Everything’s done. If there is nothing else, I’m going upstairs to rest.”

Only then did my mother look up. “Lily has just come home. Let’s have a family meal together.”

“I’m tired. I don’t feel like eating.”

“Do you not want to see me, Max? I just came back, and you already dislike me this much?”

Lily’s eyes went red and wet as she looked at me.

My mother’s expression darkened. “Max, how can you be so inconsiderate?”

I replied calmly, “I just got off a flight that lasted over 20 hours. I’m exhausted. I haven’t even slept off the jet lag.”

Hearing that, she finally realized I had just returned from a business trip. When she saw how red my eyes were from exhaustion, she looked slightly embarrassed. I went straight upstairs and ignored the noise from below.

The family group chat kept lighting up. After my shower, I glanced at the messages and felt my lips curl into a cold smile.

[So Lily is back. Jack, when are you holding the welcome banquet? This is a huge occasion for our family!]

[Exactly. Make it grand. You can also announce the company arrangements at the same time. Oh, and Maxine should probably move out of the house, right? And what about the engagement? Should that be reconsidered as well?]

I did not care about all of the comments meant to kick me while I was down. However, I could not ignore that last part. The Roy family had a marriage arrangement with the Pratt family. Since I was no longer the Roy family’s daughter, what was Gregory Pratt’s stance going to be?

The chat kept exploding with notifications. It felt tiresome, so I quit it. By their logic, I was not a Roy anymore, so I had no business staying in the group. I left on my own terms before they could ask me to.

As for Gregory, he deserved a conversation.

Early the next morning, Lilian went out with my parents. I packed a few clothes and prepared to move to my own place.

What he had not expected was that I, a girl from the countryside, would rise to the top and become the most prominent figure in the Roy family. It was something he could not accept. So he brought his biological niece back from the countryside with the hope that she could take my place.Unfortunately, Lilian was incapable. When that failed, he decided to push me out instead. He had her demand all my shares, even the company. In the end, she could not hold on to any of it.Now that everything had come to light and the evidence was clear, the Roy family reported Alex to the police. Lauren made it clear that she would never forgive him.Lily, on the other hand, was terrified. She dropped to her knees and begged Lauren for forgiveness over and over. However, she had broken my parents’ heart.Alex had been scheming all along, and that idiot was stupid enough to team up with him and try to drain the family dry. In the end, they gave Lily an apartment, fifty thousand in cash, and told he

I shrugged and gestured toward the door. Lilian was furious, but Jack dragged her out. Even from a distance, I could still hear her cursing me. Then, a sharp slap cut through the air.She left in tears. I figured that she would eventually understand what I meant.Three days later, Jack returned. He handed me the equity transfer agreement and begged me to come back.By then, the Roy family’s assets were nearly depleted. And one by one, the people hiding in the shadows had started showing their true colors. When Jack’s brother, Alex Roy, saw me, he immediately rushed forward. “What are you doing here? Maxine, the company has nothing to do with you anymore!”Jack pushed him aside. “Max is here to acquire the company. The company’s finished.”Alex was stunned. “Acquire it? She has nothing. She was thrown out of the family. How could she possibly acquire us?”I snorted. “I might not have the money, but the Pratt family does.”Lilian clenched her fists. “That’s my engagement!”“But

Jack went home in a rage. Two more days passed before I saw him and Lilian again.I sat high above the city in my sleek, sunlit office while Lilian stared at me with an unpleasant expression. After seeing me, Jack gave her a shove from behind. “Didn’t you say you had something to say? Get on with it.”She looked at me with an obvious reluctant expression.“Max, I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. Come back, please.”Hearing that, I chuckled. “You’re asking me to come back? Let me do the math. Hiring a CEO at this level would cost at least tens of millions a year, and that would come with equity. How far are you willing to go? How much are you offering me?”After saying that, I looked straight at her. Lilian clenched her fists tightly, as if she had suddenly remembered what I said when I left. The Roy family did not survive on their name, but on me. Hearing I was asking her for terms, she was reluctant, but she had no choice but to compromise.“I’ll give you twenty percent of

I let out a self-mocking smile. “I’ll give myself this much, I know I’m useful. But here is something you clearly didn’t figure out about me. I’ve never played by anyone else’s rules. I never place the initiative in anyone else’s hands. Neither you nor Lilian is my only option.”At that, he finally lost his composure. He clearly had not expected me to be so dismissive.I stood up. Gregory reached out and grabbed me from behind. “Can’t you give me a chance?” “A chance? What kind of chance are you talking about? A chance between you and her, or a chance for you to use me?”I shook him off and walked away. What was he even trying to do, putting on this act in front of me?I did not want to deal with him, but he would not take the hint. Over the next few days, I received all kinds of flowers and small gifts. When I got off work, he would be standing outside. When I went to work, he would still be across from me. I took a deep breath. “Gregory, what exactly are you trying to do?”“

Bad news kept rolling through the party, and not just for the Roy family, even the clients who had come to celebrate with them started getting calls.Every contract the Roy family had previously signed, whether with partners, banks, or major clients, was affected. One after another, they made it clear they would only work with me.Where I went, they would follow. For a moment, Jack’s face turned pale.He turned toward the direction I had left and stumbled slightly. “Go after her! Bring her back now!”Hearing this, Lilian scowled. “Why do we have to dance to her tune? Anything she can do, I can do too. Why not let me try?”At that, Jack shut his eyes. “You want to try? Just forget it.”Everyone did what they could, but it made no difference. The welcome party ended hastily just like that. Sitting at the bar and swirling the red wine in my glass, I smiled. The Roy family was probably tearing their hair out. When my best friend Lea Reynor came over and saw how relaxed I looked, she

Everyone on my team expressed their support for me. Lilian did not know this, but the Roy family’s position today had nothing to do with their so-called prestigious legacy. It was all built by me, Maxine Roy.Still, I would attend her welcome banquet. The Roy family had spared no expense. The event was held at Stone Ridge Manor.Anyone of status was there. The moment I arrived, I saw a few socialites I used to be close with. There was a trace of mockery on their faces.“Maxine, the audacity of you to show up! You’ve been kicked out, and you are still putting on airs. Don’t you feel embarrassed?”“Exactly. Look at this party; it’s obvious who the real daughter is. And you? You spent years building their empire for nothing. You’re left with nothing.”“Why not ask me for help? Maybe I can get you a job. Our company happens to need a receptionist. You have a decent face. Stand at the front desk for eight grand a month. What do you say?”I glanced over at them and said in disdain, “
