Chapter 1

The Grand Lantern at the Imperial Winter Festival had always been mine to light as the kingdom's only princess. The celebration also happened to fall on my birthday.

On the day of my debut celebration, my brother, William Ashbourne, had held my hand as we lit the lantern he'd made himself.

Now, as he stared at the obscene painting Francesca Ashbourne had drawn on the lantern, he merely furrowed his brows and gently covered her eyes with his hand.

"You're an unmarried young lady. How can you look at such filthy things?" he scolded her.

Francesca stuck out her tongue playfully before turning to me with an innocent smile. "Wow, Leah, you're really something! Just look at this painting. You managed to handle eight men at once. How extraordinary! I bet only someone like you could stomach that sort of thing."

She tilted her head, the malice in her eyes threatening to drown me.

I knew exactly what she was doing. She was exploiting my deepest, most painful wound to provoke me into losing control in front of the entire court.

But ever since Francesca had arrived, I'd endured such tricks countless times. Now that I could finally go home, I no longer cared.

"There's nothing special about it. If you're curious, you can try it yourself. I could even turn your experience into a scandalous novel and spread it throughout the kingdom. Wouldn't that be better?"

The moment I finished speaking, William slapped me hard across the face. "Shut up! Francesca would have nightmares just from glancing at something so filthy! Do you think she's as shameless and debased as you?"

My cheek stung, yet I let out a quiet laugh. "Of course not. She's a lady of noble birth, while I'm covered in filth. I was out of line. I'll take my leave."

When William saw me turn and walk away, he stared at me in disbelief. "What do you mean by that? You used to compete with Francesca over absolutely everything. Now you're putting on this miserable act. What are you plotting?"

He wasn't wrong. I'd fought for those things back then.

But it wasn't the things themselves I wanted. All I'd ever wanted was the love of the only family I had in this world.

Back then, I'd transmigrated into a novel and become Leah Ashbourne, a little princess.

The system had told me that if I earned enough favor points from key characters, I could leave this world with a million-dollar reward.

William was merely a prince with no claim to the throne. But he'd treated me so well that I'd willingly given up everything and severed my connection to the system just to stay in this world by his side.

I'd been proud and stubborn back then. I couldn't bear to watch Francesca cry and whine as she tried to take everything that belonged to me.

She was nothing more than the orphaned daughter of the kingdom's former ruling family, yet she opposed me at every turn.

We'd once gotten into a hair-pulling fight over a single lantern in front of the entire court.

William had been furious. He'd scolded me for disgracing the imperial family and sentenced me to kneel in the imperial crypt for an entire month. Even when I developed a high fever and passed out, he refused to let anyone treat me.

All he could see was that I was picking on Francesca.

Yet in previous years, he'd always been the one to place that very lantern in my hands.

I closed my eyes in pain, only for a sudden force to shove me forward.

Amid the startled cries, a figure clad in armor stepped in front of Francesca to shield her.

It was my fiancé, Theo Blackwood, a young general.

He shot me a look of disgust before turning to William and Francesca.

"I heard Leah was back, so I rushed all the way from the northern frontier to protect you. Francesca, are you all right?" As he spoke, Theo spared me a glance, seemingly waiting for me to fly into one of my usual jealous rages.

But I said nothing. I silently steadied myself and continued on my way.

I hadn't gone far when Theo chased after me and grabbed my arm, nearly causing me to stumble.

For some reason, he seemed consumed by anger as he confronted me. "Leah! What's with this act of yours, pretending you're above it all? Do you think we'll pity you just because you're acting like this?

"Pathetic. You're a ruined woman now. At best, after Francesca and I get married, I'll make you my mistress and keep you in my bed!"

"Tell me! Tell me exactly what happened, every last detail!" William demanded. "If you do, I might at least let you keep your bodies intact when you die!"The servants who had forced me back into the fire just moments earlier were now trembling like leaves in the wind. Under severe torture, they confessed to their crimes one by one."Lady Francesca paid us to burn the disfavored princess alive!""She promised to let us leave the palace once we'd finished the job. We swear we'll never do it again..."William shook uncontrollably. His sword flashed, and the servants fell dead one after another. After slaughtering the servants, he finally turned his blade on Francesca. "Francesca Ashbourne, you claimed you could hear the system speaking to Leah. You even claimed you could find a way to make her stay forever."So what the hell is going on now? Was a single word you said ever true?"Terrified by the icy gleam of the sword's tip, Francesca burst into tears and turned to Theo for help.

Theo burst into tears. "Leah! Leah, wake up! Please, don't scare me!"His vision went black, and he collapsed on the spot. For a moment, the palace was filled with screams, sobs, and frantic shouts for the imperial physicians to save him. It had never been so lively.I merely watched coldly, wondering what excuse Francesca would come up with this time to salvage the wedding she'd spent her entire life dreaming of."Brother, don't panic just yet. The body is completely burned. Who knows if it's even Leah? She has a heart of stone. For all we know, she killed someone else and used the body as a substitute!" she claimed.William shuddered violently before he muttered to himself, "Right, right! Leah wouldn't willingly die. She can't be dead! Someone get the coroner! Examine the body!"An imperial physician immediately stepped forward and began examining the remains.William watched him tensely, as though he feared the man might try to deceive him.But how could he know that Frances

While I was lost in thought, Francesca finally arrived. With a pitiful expression and tears in her eyes, she hurried over to the two men. "Brother, honey, this place is dangerous. Why don't we leave the servants to handle things and go back to finish our wedding first?"The thing I've looked forward to most in my entire life is our wedding today. Perhaps Leah deliberately set the fire and faked her death just to ruin it!"The tension on both men's faces immediately eased. They exchanged a glance and let out a long sigh of relief."That's right. Francesca is right. Leah is full of tricks. She approached us to complete her system missions in the first place. She never had an ounce of genuine affection for us. For all we know, she's hiding somewhere right now, laughing her head off at us for worrying like a pair of fools!""Exactly! Leah has gone too far this time. Just wait until I get my hands on her. I'll make sure she pays for this!"As I listened to them, I let out a bitter la

Francesca's sobs abruptly stopped. Disbelief filled her face. "I... I'm hurt!"She couldn't understand it, and neither could I. Why did everything seem to return to normal the moment I died?William and Theo didn't spare Francesca another glance. They hurried toward the fire. When William saw that the secluded palace had been reduced to ashes, he flew into a rage. "Guards! Where is everyone? Are you all dead? Put out the fire! If anything has happened to Leah, every servant who was supposed to be guarding her will be buried with her!"The palace servants who had just forced me back into the flames went deathly pale. They scrambled to fetch water.Meanwhile, Theo hadn't even taken off his wedding attire before he recklessly charged into the blaze! The attendants from the General's Estate were beside themselves with terror. They grabbed him and held on tightly."General, please think this through! A fire this fierce will kill you!""It's your wedding day! Even if you're worried a

I clung desperately to the burning doorframe, refusing to let go even as my clothes caught fire. When the servants saw that I'd actually managed to crawl out, their expressions darkened."Lady Francesca said you're not allowed to leave this courtyard today.""Princess, forgive us."In an instant, countless wooden poles thrust toward me from every direction, forcing me back into the sea of flames. At the sight of their twisted, vicious expressions, I burst into hysterical laughter. My laughter sent chills down their spines. They had no idea what had gotten into me.But how could they know? I wasn't trying to beg for help. I wanted the celestial phenomenon known as the White Rainbow Crossing the Sun to send me home!Having completely lost the will to survive, I fell backward into the sea of flames. At that very moment, a brilliant light flashed across the sky, and my soul slowly rose into the air.I watched as the flames consumed my body, reducing it to a charred corpse.I cou

The blow left me so dizzy that I couldn't get back up for a long time."No, that's not it. She was the one who ordered those men to violate me back then—"Before I could finish, another slap struck me across the face.William's expression darkened. He looked down at me with cold indifference and said, "When I saw you rushing around with your clothes in such disarray, I thought something had happened to you. That's why I followed you."Leah, you've disappointed me beyond words!"Guards! Strip her down to her undergarments and hang her outside the palace gates for public display. Charge one penny per visit. Let the commoners come and gawk at her!""No—"Before I could finish pleading, someone clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me away. The guards stripped me down to my undergarments and hung me beneath the city walls, exposed to the howling wind and driving snow.As word spread, countless commoners flocked to see me. One mocking remark after another rang through the air.
