Chapter 4

Author: Waverly June
I smiled. "That's strange. Aren't you the heir to this family? How come you don't have access to your own wine cellar?"

Blake's face turned crimson. His mouth opened, but no words came out.

Just then, an authoritative voice came from the doorway.

"What's going on in here?"

The man who was technically my father, Richard Livingston, walked in with a dark expression.

Fanny looked as though she'd just found her savior. She hurried over to complain, "Sir, look what Finn—"

Dad cut her off impatiently. His gaze settled on me, tinged with reproach. "Finn, Blake just wants a bottle of wine. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?"

"Dad, it belongs to Grandpa. He specifically said no one was allowed to touch it," I reminded him.

"This is my house. I decide what happens here." Something cold flickered in Dad's eyes. He walked over to the wine cellar, pulled a black access card from his pocket, and swiped it over the sensor.

Beep.

"Authorization override."

The lock released.

Dad took out the bottle of Romanee-Conti and handed it to Blake as though he were presenting him with a trophy. "Here. Share it with your friends."

"Thanks, Dad!" Blake immediately perked up, shooting me a triumphant look.

Any doubts among our classmates vanished instantly, replaced by even more enthusiastic praise.

"Your dad is awesome, Blake!"

"Guess there's no question who's really his son!"

Dad's blatant favoritism only made everyone more convinced that Blake was exactly who he claimed to be.

And there I stood amid all the noise, as though I were the outsider who didn't belong.

I stared at Dad's cold, heartless face, feeling nothing but ice inside.

In my previous life, I'd never seen through the ambition hidden beneath his hypocritical facade. I'd always convinced myself that his favoritism toward Blake came from disappointment in me.

It wasn't until he'd personally driven me to ruin that I discovered a shocking secret.

Dad raised his glass, about to toast Blake.

I quietly moved behind him. Once he'd finished his drink, I discreetly took the glass he'd just used. His saliva remained on the rim.

It was the most crucial piece of my plan.

This time, I wasn't going to give him another chance.

Back in my room, I locked the door and made a call.

"Mr. Bennett, it's Finn."

A steady voice answered. "What can I do for you, Finn?"

Patrick Bennett was my grandfather's personal bodyguard, a former Special Forces soldier whose loyalty belonged solely to Grandpa and my mother.

"I'm going to send you a few things. I need you to investigate Blake and Fanny." I paused before adding, "Especially Blake's biological father. I want everything you can find."

In my previous life, I'd begun to suspect there was more to their relationship shortly before I died, but I hadn't lived long enough to uncover the truth.

Now that I'd been given another chance, details I'd overlooked before were coming back to me.

The way Dad favored Blake had never made sense. No employer treated his housekeeper's son that way. It felt more like deliberate compensation—and as though Dad had some use for him.

There had to be a deeper secret behind it.

"Don't worry, Finn. I'll have answers for you within seven days."

Monday morning dawned bright and clear.

My phone rang. It was Grandpa. His energetic voice came through the phone.

"Finn, I donated a library to your school in your name. They're calling it the Finn Stanton Library. The dedication ceremony is this afternoon. I won't be able to make it back in time, so I want you there representing me. Make me proud!"

Warmth spread through my chest as I held the phone.

The same thing had happened in my previous life.

But back then, I'd been so consumed by the pain of being rejected by my father and my so-called brother that I'd barely known how to respond to Grandpa's love.

The entire sequence was seamless and lightning fast.Blake tried to struggle, but Patrick drove a knee into his lower back. Blake immediately went limp, collapsing like a rag doll with nothing left but pained groans.Almost simultaneously, the hospital room door burst open. A group of police officers rushed in, the lead officer holding up his badge."We received a report of a premeditated attempted murder and kidnapping."The officers quickly surveyed the room and took control of everyone involved. The moment Fanny and Miles saw the police, they completely fell apart, collapsing to the floor. Two officers restrained Dad. He didn't resist. He simply stood there in a daze, muttering to himself, "It's over... It's all over..."Everything had gone exactly as I'd planned. From the moment I'd asked Patrick to intercept Miles, the outcome had already been decided.I watched without a flicker of emotion as the police hauled them away. Then one of the monitors beside Grandpa's bed made

Mom didn't bother responding to him again. She walked straight over to me and looked me over carefully. Only after confirming that I was unharmed did a trace of warmth enter her eyes."Finn, you've really grown up."Then her gaze swept over the documents on Grandpa's bed before landing on Fanny and Blake, who were on the floor trembling uncontrollably."You two have some nerve. Do you have a death wish?"In the face of absolute power, all their schemes and calculations fell apart like the pathetic joke they were. The agreement Dad had signed was now nothing more than a worthless piece of paper, a silent testament to his stupidity and greed."It's over... It's all over..." Blake muttered, his eyes vacant.Every dream he'd had, every ounce of pride he'd built his life around, shattered in an instant. He'd fallen from the very top, and there was nothing left to catch him."Oh, right." As though I'd only just remembered something, I woke my phone screen again and opened another fi

"These are the Stanton Group share transfer agreements, along with the inheritance documents for all the family's real estate."Dad picked up one of the documents and handed it to Blake, a manic gleam in his eyes. "Blake, sign it! Starting today, you'll be the true head of the Stanton family!"Blake's hands trembled with excitement. He'd dreamed of this day for years.I leaned against the doorway, watching the ugly spectacle with cold detachment."You're awfully sure his signature will actually mean anything," I said calmly.Dad turned and looked at me as though I were already dead. "Vivian is dead, and the old man doesn't have much longer. Everything the Stanton family owns will belong to my biological son.""Oh? Is that so?"My phone vibrated.Patrick had sent me a file.I opened it.It was a DNA paternity test.I turned the screen toward them and spoke unhurriedly, "There's something here I think you'll find interesting.""Blake Livingston..." I looked at him, enunciatin

I ended the call and handed the phone back to the man in the hospital gown."Thank you," I said hoarsely. Then I quickly composed myself and walked out.The bodyguard outside gave me a suspicious look but said nothing.I sat back down beside Dad, lowered my head, and buried my hands in my hair, playing the part of a terrified, distraught teenager. The hallway was deathly silent.I had no idea how much time had passed when the phone in Dad's pocket gave a faint buzz. He practically lunged for it and unlocked the screen.I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.For a split second, unmistakable elation flashed across his face. He immediately suppressed it and replaced it with a mask of grief, but that fraction of a second was all I needed. He stood and walked over to me, looking down with a sickening imitation of sympathy. "Finn, I just got some terrible news."My head snapped up.He sighed and shook his head as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "Miles just cal

His body went limp and started to fall backward."Grandpa!"My eyes widened, and I lunged forward to catch him.Grandpa clutched my hand tightly. His lips moved, but before he could get a single word out, he lost consciousness completely. The wail of an approaching ambulance grew louder, its siren echoing across the school grounds.Holding my unconscious grandfather, I looked at Dad. There wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. If anything, I caught a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.Rage surged through me.Inside the ambulance, I pulled out my phone and called my mother. The moment she answered, I heard an airport announcement in the background."Mom, Grandpa had a heart attack. We're on our way to the hospital.""What?!" Mom's voice immediately filled with panic. "I just landed. I'm coming right now!"My blood ran cold. She'd just landed. In my previous life, Mom had been rushing from the airport to the hospital when she was killed instantly in a horrific "accident."S

Blake grinned and reached for the cord that was supposed to be mine.Just before his fingers touched the red fabric—"Richard Livingston, you've got some nerve!"An elderly but powerful voice thundered from the back of the crowd, shaking with fury. The crowd parted on its own.Grandpa strode toward us with an ornate cane in hand, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits. Despite his age, he stood perfectly straight, his gaze as sharp as ever. The smug look on Dad's face froze instantly. He forced out a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Dad... what are you doing here?""If I hadn't come, you would've taken over the entire Stanton family while my back was turned!" Grandpa stepped onto the stage without even looking at Dad. He came straight to me and rested a weathered hand on my shoulder. "Finn, I'm sorry you had to go through this."I shook my head. My nose stung, and my eyes immediately grew hot. With Grandpa there, it felt as though I finally had someone solid standin
