Chapter 5

Author: Waverly June
"Of course, Grandpa," I said softly.

That afternoon, the plaza outside the school auditorium was packed.

I stood straight and tall on the temporary stage, dressed in the custom-tailored suit Grandpa had sent over that morning.

The principal personally adjusted my tie, beaming as he stepped up to the microphone.

"Today, we're incredibly honored to celebrate the grand opening of the Finn Stanton Library! Please join me in thanking Mr. Charles Stanton for his generous support of our school, and welcome his grandson, one of our outstanding students, Finn Stanton, to officially unveil the building!"

Thunderous applause erupted below the stage. Countless eyes fixed on me, filled with envy, jealousy, and curiosity.

Before long, the murmurs in the crowd nearly drowned out the applause.

"Wait. Didn't everyone say at the party this weekend that Blake was the real heir? His dad practically proved it himself."

"Exactly. So why is the library named after Finn? The Finn Stanton Library? Which one of them is actually family?"

"Don't tell me Finn's the real Stanton heir and Blake really is just the housekeeper's son."

I spotted Blake in the crowd. His expression shifted wildly, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles stood out.

I ignored him and calmly walked toward the plaque concealed beneath a red cloth, taking hold of the gold cord.

This was my moment.

Just as I was about to pull—

"Wait!"

A sharp shout cut through the excitement.

Dad forced his way through the crowd, dragging Blake with him as he rushed onto the stage, breathing hard.

The entire plaza fell silent.

Without a word of explanation, Dad snatched the microphone from the principal's hand, his expression leaving no room for argument.

"Teachers, students, thank you all for being here." He cleared his throat and swept his gaze across the crowd before finally settling on me. "My apologies. The wrong name was announced just now. It was a simple mix-up."

Dead silence.

He yanked Blake forward and planted a heavy hand on his shoulder, nearly knocking him off balance.

"As the current CEO of Stanton Group and the primary contributor behind this donation, I've decided that this library will officially be named the Blake Livingston Library!"

The crowd erupted.

The reversal happened so quickly that no one seemed to know what to make of it.

Then the whispers exploded.

"Holy shit! I knew it! Blake really is the heir!"

"So Finn really is the housekeeper's son? I guess it doesn't matter how much his grandfather spoils him. He's still not actually part of the family."

"That's hilarious. We were all clapping for him five seconds ago. That's embarrassing."

Blake immediately straightened, a smug smile tugging uncontrollably at his lips as he looked at me.

Dad turned his cold gaze on me, his eyes filled with disgust and contempt.

In an instant, I'd become the biggest joke in the entire school.

One second, I'd been standing at the top; the next, I'd been publicly torn down in front of everyone.

Blake could barely contain his delight. He walked over and lowered his voice so only I could hear him. "See that, Finn? Everything you have belongs to me."

The entire sequence was seamless and lightning fast.Blake tried to struggle, but Patrick drove a knee into his lower back. Blake immediately went limp, collapsing like a rag doll with nothing left but pained groans.Almost simultaneously, the hospital room door burst open. A group of police officers rushed in, the lead officer holding up his badge."We received a report of a premeditated attempted murder and kidnapping."The officers quickly surveyed the room and took control of everyone involved. The moment Fanny and Miles saw the police, they completely fell apart, collapsing to the floor. Two officers restrained Dad. He didn't resist. He simply stood there in a daze, muttering to himself, "It's over... It's all over..."Everything had gone exactly as I'd planned. From the moment I'd asked Patrick to intercept Miles, the outcome had already been decided.I watched without a flicker of emotion as the police hauled them away. Then one of the monitors beside Grandpa's bed made

Mom didn't bother responding to him again. She walked straight over to me and looked me over carefully. Only after confirming that I was unharmed did a trace of warmth enter her eyes."Finn, you've really grown up."Then her gaze swept over the documents on Grandpa's bed before landing on Fanny and Blake, who were on the floor trembling uncontrollably."You two have some nerve. Do you have a death wish?"In the face of absolute power, all their schemes and calculations fell apart like the pathetic joke they were. The agreement Dad had signed was now nothing more than a worthless piece of paper, a silent testament to his stupidity and greed."It's over... It's all over..." Blake muttered, his eyes vacant.Every dream he'd had, every ounce of pride he'd built his life around, shattered in an instant. He'd fallen from the very top, and there was nothing left to catch him."Oh, right." As though I'd only just remembered something, I woke my phone screen again and opened another fi

"These are the Stanton Group share transfer agreements, along with the inheritance documents for all the family's real estate."Dad picked up one of the documents and handed it to Blake, a manic gleam in his eyes. "Blake, sign it! Starting today, you'll be the true head of the Stanton family!"Blake's hands trembled with excitement. He'd dreamed of this day for years.I leaned against the doorway, watching the ugly spectacle with cold detachment."You're awfully sure his signature will actually mean anything," I said calmly.Dad turned and looked at me as though I were already dead. "Vivian is dead, and the old man doesn't have much longer. Everything the Stanton family owns will belong to my biological son.""Oh? Is that so?"My phone vibrated.Patrick had sent me a file.I opened it.It was a DNA paternity test.I turned the screen toward them and spoke unhurriedly, "There's something here I think you'll find interesting.""Blake Livingston..." I looked at him, enunciatin

I ended the call and handed the phone back to the man in the hospital gown."Thank you," I said hoarsely. Then I quickly composed myself and walked out.The bodyguard outside gave me a suspicious look but said nothing.I sat back down beside Dad, lowered my head, and buried my hands in my hair, playing the part of a terrified, distraught teenager. The hallway was deathly silent.I had no idea how much time had passed when the phone in Dad's pocket gave a faint buzz. He practically lunged for it and unlocked the screen.I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.For a split second, unmistakable elation flashed across his face. He immediately suppressed it and replaced it with a mask of grief, but that fraction of a second was all I needed. He stood and walked over to me, looking down with a sickening imitation of sympathy. "Finn, I just got some terrible news."My head snapped up.He sighed and shook his head as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "Miles just cal

His body went limp and started to fall backward."Grandpa!"My eyes widened, and I lunged forward to catch him.Grandpa clutched my hand tightly. His lips moved, but before he could get a single word out, he lost consciousness completely. The wail of an approaching ambulance grew louder, its siren echoing across the school grounds.Holding my unconscious grandfather, I looked at Dad. There wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. If anything, I caught a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.Rage surged through me.Inside the ambulance, I pulled out my phone and called my mother. The moment she answered, I heard an airport announcement in the background."Mom, Grandpa had a heart attack. We're on our way to the hospital.""What?!" Mom's voice immediately filled with panic. "I just landed. I'm coming right now!"My blood ran cold. She'd just landed. In my previous life, Mom had been rushing from the airport to the hospital when she was killed instantly in a horrific "accident."S

Blake grinned and reached for the cord that was supposed to be mine.Just before his fingers touched the red fabric—"Richard Livingston, you've got some nerve!"An elderly but powerful voice thundered from the back of the crowd, shaking with fury. The crowd parted on its own.Grandpa strode toward us with an ornate cane in hand, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits. Despite his age, he stood perfectly straight, his gaze as sharp as ever. The smug look on Dad's face froze instantly. He forced out a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Dad... what are you doing here?""If I hadn't come, you would've taken over the entire Stanton family while my back was turned!" Grandpa stepped onto the stage without even looking at Dad. He came straight to me and rested a weathered hand on my shoulder. "Finn, I'm sorry you had to go through this."I shook my head. My nose stung, and my eyes immediately grew hot. With Grandpa there, it felt as though I finally had someone solid standin
