Chapter 3

Author: Hunk Alert
Day by day, time slipped past, and the moment of the apocalypse drew closer.

The oppressive heat in the air grew more pronounced. By afternoon, the sunlight carried a searing sting against the skin.

A few days later, the central air conditioner at home broke down, its cooling power drastically reduced. After checking it, the repairman said the compressor had aged and needed replacing—it would cost over three hundred.

"Replace it! It has to be replaced!" Daisy fanned herself irritably in the living room. "It's hot as hell already. How are we supposed to live without air-conditioning?"

Stanley was drenched in sweat as well. "It does need to be replaced. Amelia, the money…"

"Dad, I already said it before," I replied evenly. "Not a single cent from the fund should be touched."

Seeing Stanley's temper about to flare, I shifted gears. "But since everyone's having such a hard time, I do have a compromise."

"What is it?" they asked at once.

"One of my coworkers has a rental house in the suburbs, with a basement. His whole family is emigrating soon and he's planning to rent it out.

"The environment's decent, and more importantly, it's cool. We can stay there for a while. Once our bunker is finished, we'll move in."

All three of them lit up. Daisy asked eagerly, "Really? How much will it cost? Amelia, you're close with him—have him let us stay for free!"

I smiled faintly. "It's free. Don't worry, just stay there. We're family, after all."

Daisy immediately beamed, then looked at me with a troubled expression. "Amelia, building the bunker is such a big project. Someone has to keep an eye on the construction every day, right? Your father and I are getting old, and Denise doesn't understand these things…"

I sneered inwardly, but put on a puzzled look. "Mom, what do you mean?"

Daisy slapped her thigh. "The three of us will go live in the rental place. You stay here. It'll be convenient for you to watch the construction site every day and supervise the progress."

Stanley cleared his throat, putting on the air of the head of the household. "Your mother's right."

"All right…" I said, my face filled with reluctance and grievance.

The very next day, Stanley called me.

"Amelia! Where the hell are you?!"

The moment I picked up, his hysterical roar exploded through the phone. In the background were Denise and Daisy's shrill cries.

"What kind of garbage place did you rent for us? There's an abandoned pig farm right next door! And there's no air-conditioning! Is the bunker finished yet? Hurry and take us there! We're about to be roasted alive!"

He screamed into the phone, his voice wild with agitation and impatience.

"Oh, the bunker?" I drawled. "I'm already inside."

On the other end of the line, there was a deathly silence—about three seconds long.

Then came an even more furious scream, this time Daisy's.

"Amelia, you ungrateful wretch! You're enjoying the bunker alone?! You're leaving us out here to die? Have you no conscience? We're your parents!"

"That's right, Amelia!" Denise's sobbing voice cut in. "How can you be so selfish? The bunker was built with money we all put in! What right do you have to take it all for yourself? Come out and get us! Now!"

I let out a soft laugh. "Why the rush? The safe's key and the address of the bunker are both inside. And the password—you already know it, don't you?"

From the other end came frantic rummaging sounds, mixed with barely restrained delight.

"Found it! We found it!"

Leisurely, I leaned back on the sofa and switched to the surveillance feed of the safe.

I watched as the three of them crowded around the safe, entering the password.

Their faces bloomed with the wild joy of survivors spared from disaster.

Then… the smiles froze.

The safe was completely empty.

"Where's the gold?! Where did our gold go?!"

When I refused to open the door, they had no choice but to decide to crawl back to the rental house. They never made it.Before they could reach it, they collapsed at the pig farm. With no further supplies, under relentless heat and severe burns, their vitality drained away at terrifying speed. They fell into a pigpen that had long since dried up, filled with rotting pig carcasses and layers of excrement. The overpowering stench swallowed them whole in an instant."No…" Denise let out her final, feeble whimper. She never would have imagined that the end of her life would come in a pigsty reeking of decay.Daisy and Stanley no longer even had the strength to struggle. Their bodies sank helplessly into the filth—foul, putrid, and heavy with the breath of death.Stanley's lips trembled, as if he were trying to say something.I watched quietly until they drew their final breaths and their bodies went completely still.Under the extreme heat, their corpses quickly began to dehydra

"Amelia, honey, I'm sorry… Please…" Stanley struggled to lift his head, staring at the pitch-black crack in the door."Let us in… we'll give you everything… all the gold… we don't want anything else anymore… we just want to live…""Yes… Amelia…" Daisy lay sprawled on the ground, tears mixing with blistered fluid from her burns, smearing her face. "I'm begging you… I treated you badly before… I see that now… Please, just take pity on us…"Denise was nearly dried out, her body on the verge of collapse.I didn't respond. Instead, I pressed another button.A mechanical arm slowly pushed a metal tray out through the narrow gap in the door.On the tray sat three plain buns and a single 500-milliliter bottle of mineral water. This was the last bit of "mercy" I was willing to grant them. The moment they saw food and water, the three of them seemed to forget their pain entirely. A feral light burst into their eyes.Stanley was closest. Mustering all his remaining strength, he writhed f

That night, while Daisy and Denise hid in the basement to escape the heat, Stanley crept into the kitchen and found the very last sausage. He had just torn open the wrapper, ready to eat it all by himself, when Denise—parched and coming upstairs to look for water—caught him red-handed."Dad! You're stealing food!" Denise's shrill scream ripped through the stifling night.Daisy rushed in as well. The moment she saw Stanley's cheeks stuffed full, half a sausage still clutched in his hand, she exploded."Stanley! You selfish bastard! You're sneaking food behind our backs—behind your own wife and daughter! Are you even a man?""This is our last food!" Denise cried as she lunged at him, trying to snatch the remaining sausage from his hand. "You're actually trying to eat it all by yourself!"Surrounded by his wife and daughter, Stanley panicked and grew furious. He swallowed the food in his mouth in a hurry and shouted through a full mouth, "I'm the head of this family! The next few days passed in absolute comfort for me.I slept until I woke naturally, did yoga, watched old movies I'd downloaded before the apocalypse, studied recipes, and treated my stomach to something different every day.Meanwhile, the rental house had turned into a true living hell.Back then, they had moved into this "safe haven" I'd carefully selected for them, overjoyed and full of anticipation. It did, indeed, have a basement—enough to temporarily block out the initial waves of heat. But they soon discovered the truth: there was no air-conditioning, the windows were pitifully small, ventilation was terrible, and worst of all, it was right next to an abandoned pig farm that reeked of a suffocating stench.Once the apocalypse officially arrived, that so-called refuge quickly transformed into a massive, airtight oven.Surface temperatures soared to seventy degrees. The concrete walls grew scorching hot under the sun. The air inside thickened like congealed glue—every brea

I hung up the call and opened the family group chat.It had already exploded—hundreds of unread messages flashing nonstop.Stanley: [Amelia, you animal! Get your ass out here! Give the gold back to us!]Daisy: [My money! My life's savings! Amelia, you'll die a horrible death! I knew it—you're a walking curse, destined to doom this whole family!]Denise: [Amelia, I'm begging you, please let us in, okay? I don't want to die… it's so hot out here… @Amelia]I admired the chaos for a moment. Then, unhurriedly, I took a photo of the food and ice cream beside me and sent it to the group.I made sure to place the indoor thermometer right in the frame, impossible to miss. 24°C, displayed clearly. The photo was like a bomb dropped into boiling oil. After a brief, deathly silence, the chat erupted into even more frenzied, hysterical messages.Denise: [AHHHH! Amelia! You bitch! You're eating my favorite! And you're enjoying air-conditioning!]Daisy: Damn you! We're being roasted alive out h
