POV: Sierra

There was no pain.

That was the first thing Sierra understood, and the absence was strange enough to be informative. The last thing she remembered was pain...the catastrophic impact of Paige's working striking her chest with the force of thirty years of preparation finally finding its target.

The pain had been enormous and immediate. Then it had simply stopped. That was not how pain worked when a person was alive and recovering.

She was floating.

Not literally. There was no water,

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   What She Offered

POV: AveryThe entity’s communication settled into a frequency the Royal markers could translate into something resembling language. Not words, but intent shaped into recognizable meaning, like a river following its course without being the course itself.“Why should I negotiate?” the entity communicated. Its meaning carried the weight of three thousand years of imprisonment and the fury of waking to find the cold had never left. “I am hungry. I am power. I am freedom denied.”Avery received its words without retreating. “Because we are offering you something your captors never did,” she said. She spoke aloud because articulating her thoughts helped her organize them under pressure. “Choice.”The entity’s attention shifted. It did not soften, but something changed. It had encountered a concept for which it lacked a framework, and Avery could feel it trying to understand the meaning.“Choice,” it transmitted, holding the word up for examination as though considering it from every angle

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   What Rose From the Pool

POV: AveryThe heart's pool had been trembling since dawn. The disturbance was not visible, nor was it the physical ripple caused by an outside force. It lay beneath the surface, in the shifting of the light. The pool’s usual warm violet glow had taken on a restless nature, as though the Heart were struggling to maintain its normal function against pressure building from below.Avery had been sitting beside it since dawn. No one had assigned her to watch the pool. Her Royal markers had been responding to the entity’s growing wakefulness for three days, their power attuned to the same frequency the entity occupied. Sitting beside the pool was the clearest way she had found to monitor the changes she could feel gathering beneath its surface.Landon arrived at six in the morning. He crossed the Heart Chamber without speaking and sat beside her at the pool’s edge. Since they were three, he had always stayed close during significant moments. His wolf biology grounded her royal markers, the

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   The Last Dinner of the Before

POV: RyderYear SeventeenPresent DayThe table had been enlarged four times since Hunter first observed that they would need a bigger one. Its original design had never accounted for the number of people who would eventually gather around it, all of them convinced that this was where the important meals belonged.Ryder looked back on his forty-seven years from the center of the table, a place he had never expected to occupy at thirty or still occupy at forty-seven. Now, he could not imagine sitting anywhere else.Sierra sat to his left. She had not aged as he had. Scarlett had spent seventeen years monitoring the effects of Bond-Touched longevity on Sierra, whose biology as a Bond-Touched, Ancestor-Blessed human followed a considerably slower course than that of an ordinary human.Scarlett still considered its long-term effects incompletely understood and difficult to predict. At forty-three, Sierra looked to be in her early thirties. Their differing appearances had once prompted a c

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   What the Years Carried

POV: RyderYear OneLandon learned to walk exactly as Ryder had expected: he decided he was going to do it and then did it with the stubborn determination of someone who refused to reconsider, no matter how often the floor argued otherwise. He fell seventeen times on the first day he attempted to walk. On his eighteenth try, he crossed the Heart Chamber’s upper level from Ryder to Sierra and stopped at her knee, looking thoroughly satisfied with himself and ready for the acknowledgment he knew he deserved. Sierra gave it to him.Avery learned to walk three weeks later, not because she was less capable but because she had watched Landon fall seventeen times and apparently decided that her first attempt deserved more preparation. When she finally walked, she crossed the distance from her starting point to the eastern garden’s edge and back, covering four times Landon’s initial distance without falling once.Year ThreeRyder knew something was happening before he reached the kitchen. Thr

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   Three Days of One Evening

POV: JaxonThe day's work ran from morning diplomatic correspondence to an afternoon structural assessment, followed by an early evening meeting with two faction representatives whose organizations were still building a formal relationship that required the Guardian's facilitation rather than the informal contact handled through Asher's reformed Council network.Across three years, Jaxon had learned that Guardian work was not primarily the dramatic intervention the past year had produced in concentrated form. It was the sustained, patient maintenance of a space where conflicts could be resolved without reaching the point of crisis. He had found, to his own surprise, that he was suited to it.The ancestral voices had been part of the adaptation. Three hundred years of accumulated patience had become available to a twenty-seven-year-old who had previously managed patience through sheer willpower and an understanding of its tactical value.Having patience as an internal resource rather t

  • The Fated Mate Rebellion   The Garden in the Morning

POV: KenzieThe violet flowers had been Avery's idea. Not deliberately planned. That was simply how ideas worked for Avery.Three weeks ago, she had walked through the sanctuary garden, noticed a patch of bare earth near the east wall, pressed her small hands into the soil, and produced flowers without appearing to decide that she was going to produce them. The flowers were now a permanent part of the east garden. Violet, the shade associated with Royal bloodline power, grew in an organized pattern that suggested their arrangement had not been entirely random.Avery insisted she had not arranged them. Kenzie believed her.Avery's relationship with the truth was one of the things Kenzie found most reliable about her three-year-old sister. She also suspected the flowers had been influenced by a power beyond Avery's conscious intention. At three years old, Avery's Royal markers had already demonstrated an ability to operate beneath conscious direction."Landon," Kenzie said to her brothe
