Chapter 8

Author: Diana Hill
I didn't know much about the inner workings of the Ziegler family, but everyone knew how much Jenna adored Charles. Otherwise, why would she have spent 300 million dollars to get Dad's collectible military knife all those years ago?

Before I could fully react, Charles cupped my face gently—almost reverently—with both hands. His fingers were cool, and they sent a faint tremor through me.

In that moment, the emotions he had kept hidden burst forth in his eyes. All the things I hadn't understood before, everything that had been too hazy and hard to read, suddenly aligned into an unmistakable answer.

However…

"Hey! What are you doing?"

My office door was kicked open violently.

Samuel stood in the doorway with bloodshot eyes, radiating ice-cold fury. The documents in his hands became crumpled as he clenched his hands into tight fists. His knuckles turned white, and veins bulged across the back of his hand.

"When did you return to Darniva?" he asked in a chilling voice that sent shiv

  • The Favorite's Game   Chapter 11

I smiled at Whitney's furious outburst. This was the arrogance of someone who had been favored her whole life. And the truth was simple too. What was lost or unattainable became the hardest thing to let go of.Once Charles returned to the public eye, the first thing he announced was that he and Whitney had divorced three years ago. His second announcement was that he was going to marry me.There was plenty of gossip in our circle, of course. Nevertheless, gossip only ran rampant when the subjects lacked the power to silence it. That wasn't our problem. At Charles' homecoming banquet, every person who came to toast us offered congratulatory words or well-wishes."The two families are connected by marriage again. This is fate."Unable to withstand the gossip, Whitney fled the country. When Jenna learned the truth, she wasn't surprised at all. It was as though she had expected this outcome from the beginning. I found out later on that even if Charles hadn't appeared, Jenna had alr

  • The Favorite's Game   Chapter 10

My marriage to Samuel officially ended for good. What I didn't expect was that he would show up at my company that very afternoon. I had just stepped outside when his car screeched to a halt in front of me, forcing me to instinctively step back. He climbed out quickly, looking worn down in a way I had never seen before.Nearly five days had passed since I had last seen him, and in that short time, he had unraveled. He had dark circles under his eyes and some stubble. The shirt he once kept crisp and immaculate were now wrinkled and carelessly thrown on.Jason had come to see me privately, urging me not to take things too far.He had said, "Samuel loves you. He just doesn't know how to handle things. You've put up with him for ten years. Why end everything over something so trivial?"I had only found his words laughable. They were his friends indeed. They cared only about his well-being. When he strayed from our marriage, they covered for him. When he chose Whitney over me again

  • The Favorite's Game   Chapter 9

Samuel had known very well that there were only nine days left before the waiting period was over. If he didn't go see Ingrid, they would truly be over. Jason's words echoed in his mind and kept him awake the entire night. He typed over and over again, "Can we not divorce? I'm sorry."But right before he was about to press send each time, his pride forced him to delete it.Samuel couldn't bring himself to admit the error in his ways. Besides, he genuinely believed he hadn't done anything wrong this time. All he did was peel a banana for Whitney. The worst thing he had done was neglect Ingrid for a moment. He then wondered when Ingrid had become so petty. If he compromised this time, he believed she would keep using divorce to threaten him in the future.By the time the sun rose, he had finally thought of a perfect solution. He ordered his legal department to draft an investment proposal immediately and planned to deliver it to Ingrid in person. There was no way he would ask

Charles said, "But I never expected she would come between you and Samuel."Grisdale was far from Darniva. After Charles lost his legs, he had deliberately distanced himself from the world outside. Only recently had he learned everything Samuel had been up to over the years. He went on, "Ms. Sutherland, this is my fault. I'm offering you 15% of Ziegler Group as an apology. As for the 30 billion dollars, that's for proposing to you."After he said that, his gaze remained locked on me. I pursed my lips and studied him more carefully. Charles was no less handsome than Samuel. If anything, he surpassed Samuel in looks. He was more mature and composed. Back then, Samuel had pushed himself relentlessly because everyone favored Charles. He wanted to prove he was better and more capable. Well, he had succeeded. But seeing Charles again now, I suddenly understood something. Some people—like Charles and Whitney—didn't need to prove anything. Their presence alone secured their victory.

  • The Favorite's Game   Chapter 6

That was why Samuel's friends had covered for him whenever it concerned Whitney. None of them could have ever imagined that the woman Samuel loved had always been Ingrid."Then why were you so good to Whitney?" Jason couldn't help but ask.Samuel let out a long breath and leaned back against the booth, tipping his head back slightly over the edges of the cushion. It was because Whitney had noticed him when no one else saw him. She gave him the candy that Charles never had. Even after he found out later on that he only got the candy because Charles didn't want it, he still treasured it.Because of that, he forgot something very important. He forgot all of Ingrid's efforts and what she had done for him over the past ten years. She had given him candy that wasn't expired. Never once had she forgotten his birthday. The gifts she gave him were specially chosen just for him. And she had even named a skyscraper after him.Bit by bit, she had given him the sweetness that had been missing
