Chapter 3

Author: Unliterary
"Stop him!"

A few of the guys hesitated, then closed in around me anyway.

"Move," I said coldly.

Nobody moved.

They were my brother-in-arms. We'd trained together, answered calls together, and carried fallen comrades out of fires together, never knowing if they'd make it.

But now, they'd become a wall standing in my way.

"Sorry, guys."

With a low growl, I put all my strength into it, slammed through the two men in front of me, and charged forward.

At that moment, a dark figure rammed hard into my side.

It was Vince.

He knocked me to the ground.

I felt like a few of my ribs might have cracked.

The pain knocked the breath right out of me.

He straddled me, grabbed my collar, and punched me in the face again and again.

"You little punk! Give you an inch and you take a mile, huh? Today I'm going to teach you how the world works!"

The taste of blood filled my mouth.

My vision started to blur.

All I could see were my comrades around me, turning their heads away.

I saw that influencer's phone camera in the distance, aimed right at us.

I saw the fire on the twenty-eighth floor, staining half the sky red.

"Stop! You're going to kill him!"

Larry and a few of the veterans finally snapped out of it and rushed in to drag Vince off me.

I lay on the ground and coughed up a mouthful of bloody spit.

My face burned, but that was nothing compared to the cold in my heart.

Even after they pulled him away, Vince kept cursing.

"Cuff him for obstructing official duties and violent resistance!"

Two firefighters stood there with handcuffs, looking at me with obvious reluctance.

"What are you staring at? Do it!" Vince roared.

I braced myself against the ground and slowly sat up.

I looked at the two young firefighters. Their eyes darted away, unable to meet mine.

"I'll come quietly."

I held out both hands.

The cold cuffs snapped shut around my wrists.

Just then, a piercing alarm blared over the radio.

"Captain, small explosion in Unit 2801! The fire is completely out of control! Requesting backup! Requesting backup!"

It was the other team, the one that had already gone inside the building to lay hose.

Everyone's face changed.

"Damn it!" Vince spat, finally showing a hint of urgency.

He snatched a radio from one of the guys. "All units, listen up! Full attack! Hit it with everything you've got!"

He'd finally given the order.

But I knew it was too late.

From the moment we arrived on the scene until now, a full twenty minutes had passed.

In fire rescue, every second counts.

Twenty minutes was more than enough to decide who lived and who died.

The main water valve was opened again, and several hose lines roared toward the twenty-eighth floor.

But the fire had grown too big to control.

Black smoke and sparks churned upward into an enormous mushroom cloud.

The window where that man had leaned out moments ago was now completely engulfed in flames.

No more cries for help came.

It felt like an icy wind was howling straight through my heart.

Vince stared at the scene in front of him, his own face gone a little pale.

But he quickly regained his composure.

He walked over and looked down at me.

"See that? This is what happens when you don't follow orders.

"If you'd just listened to me in the first place and stayed out of the way instead of fighting me and wasting all that time, maybe they could've been saved."

He was actually pinning the blame on me.

I was so furious I laughed out loud. "Vince, you really are an animal."

"You..."

Before he could finish, the sound of hurried footsteps cut him off.

A group of men in suits was striding toward us, surrounding a middle-aged man.

The man at the front was in his fifties and carried an air of authority without even trying. It was Director Colter Prescott, the highest-ranking official in our fire department.

Vince's eyes lit up.

He hurried over in a few quick strides to greet him, his face plastered with a fawning smile.

"Director Prescott! You came in person? For something this minor, you can just leave it to me!"

He glanced back to glare at me as he spoke.

Director Prescott didn't even look at him. His eyes were locked on the burning twenty-eighth floor. His lips trembled, and he couldn't get a single word out.

The man standing behind him, who looked like his aide, turned anxiously to Vince. "Captain Hudson! The person trapped in Unit 2801 is Director Prescott's daughter!"

I stood up and shook his hand. His palm was slick with sweat."Have a seat."The three of us fell into an awkward silence. In the end, it was Director Prescott who broke it."Blake, we came here to say thank you. And to say we're sorry."I was a little confused."Three years ago, Tim had the wrong idea about you." Director Prescott sighed. "After the fire, he wasn't thinking straight. He was convinced that you... that because of your history with Diane, you deliberately..."I understood.I looked at Tim Dillard. He kept his head down, his face flushed bright red."I'm sorry," he said quietly. "Back then, I... I'd lost my mind. I shouldn't have thought that about you."Later, after I read the full investigation report and every witness statement, I realized you were the one... the one who really tried to save them.""I want to apologize for the rotten things I thought back then."With that, he stood up and bowed deeply to me.I didn't move to stop him.I'd earned that bow

I would rather not have had it at all. After the ceremony, Director Prescott asked me to stay behind. He handed me a document."This is your appointment letter as battalion chief of the Calter District Fire Battalion.""You're young, but you step up, and you've got what it takes. You can handle this position."It was an opportunity plenty of people could only dream of.But I shook my head."Director Prescott, I'm sorry. I'd like to request a transfer."Director Prescott was surprised. "Why? You don't want to stay here?""I want to go somewhere nobody knows me," I said quietly. "I want a change of scenery. A fresh start."This city held too many memories for me.My past with Diane. That fire I'd never be able to erase.I was afraid that if I stayed, I'd live in the shadow of that night forever.Director Prescott was silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed. "I understand. Wherever you go, I'll make the arrangements. But, Blake, remember this."He looked at me and spoke

"I'm sorry," Director Prescott said.A high-ranking official was apologizing to an ordinary firefighter like me.My nose stung, and I almost broke down in tears."Now isn't the time for that." I sniffled and pointed at the fire. "Director Prescott, I request permission to lead a team into the building immediately!"The odds were slim, but as long as there was the slightest chance, I couldn't give up.I put my helmet back on and took the forcible entry tool Larry handed me."Team One, with me! Teams Two and Three, keep working it from the outside! Contain the spread!""Yes, sir!"Amid that thunderous shout, I led an assault team into the building, which had turned into a living hell. The stairwell was thick with acrid smoke and scorching heat.Covered by the hose lines, we fought our way up toward the twenty-eighth floor. With every floor we climbed, the temperature rose, and so did the danger. The walls were scorching to the touch, and chunks of burning debris kept dropping

The smile froze on Vince's face.He was completely stunned."Wh... what?" Even his voice was shaking. "Director Prescott's... daughter?""Yes!" The aide was practically stamping his feet. "We came as soon as we heard! Where is she? Has she been rescued?"Vince's lips trembled. He couldn't get a word out.His eyes drifted, almost on their own, toward the balcony on the building next door. The influencer, Abby Ford, seemed to have sensed that something was off over here. She'd stopped her livestream a while ago and was craning her neck, peering our way.Director Prescott's niece... Director Prescott's daughter...He finally understood. He'd bent over backward to suck up, and it had blown up in his face. And not just any blowup. It was the kind that could end him.Director Prescott finally snapped out of his shock. He grabbed Vince by the collar, his eyes bloodshot."Where's my daughter? Where's my grandson? What the hell did you do to them?" he roared in despair.""I... I...

Completely enraged, Vince raised his hand to slap me.I didn't dodge. The slap never landed.Lieutenant Larry Morrison rushed over and grabbed Vince's arm, holding it fast. "Captain, calm down! Blake's just too worked up!"Larry turned back and shot me a look. "Blake, quit talking back and follow orders!"I knew Larry was looking out for me.But I couldn't do it.I could almost hear Diane crying out from inside the fire.Three years ago, when she broke up with me, she'd cried just like that. She'd said, "Blake, I don't want to live like this anymore, always on edge. I'm scared that one day you won't come home.""Vince, if you try to stop me today, you'll regret it," I said, biting out each word."Is that so? I can't wait to see what you'll do about it."Vince shook off Larry's hand and straightened his collar, a sick kind of excitement on his face.He pulled out his phone and dialed."Hello, Director Prescott? Yes, it's Vince Hudson from the fire department... Yes, yes, y
