Chapter 2

Author: Unliterary
Completely enraged, Vince raised his hand to slap me.

I didn't dodge.

The slap never landed.

Lieutenant Larry Morrison rushed over and grabbed Vince's arm, holding it fast. "Captain, calm down! Blake's just too worked up!"

Larry turned back and shot me a look. "Blake, quit talking back and follow orders!"

I knew Larry was looking out for me.

But I couldn't do it.

I could almost hear Diane crying out from inside the fire.

Three years ago, when she broke up with me, she'd cried just like that.

She'd said, "Blake, I don't want to live like this anymore, always on edge. I'm scared that one day you won't come home."

"Vince, if you try to stop me today, you'll regret it," I said, biting out each word.

"Is that so? I can't wait to see what you'll do about it."

Vince shook off Larry's hand and straightened his collar, a sick kind of excitement on his face.

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

"Hello, Director Prescott? Yes, it's Vince Hudson from the fire department... Yes, yes, your niece is right across from me. I've got everything set up for her, the absolute best camera angle."

He was bowing and scraping, his voice so obsequious it was nauseating.

"There's just one small problem. One of my men doesn't know his place and insists on going in right now. It might interfere with your niece's filming... What do you think, sir?"

I couldn't tell what was said on the other end.

But Vince's back instantly straightened.

He hung up and stuffed the phone in his pocket.

"Blake, you hear that? Director Prescott says his niece's livestream comes first, above everything else."

He walked up to me and jabbed a finger into my chest.

"Director Prescott also said that if you dare make any more trouble, I'm to hand you straight over to Internal Affairs!"

"A firefighter who loses control over an ex-girlfriend and refuses to obey orders. Take a guess how Internal Affairs is going to deal with you."

I was shaking with rage.

The guys around me all kept their heads down. Nobody dared look at me or say a word.

They all knew Director Prescott was the top official over our entire fire department.

Crossing him meant torching your own career.

I stared at the burning building, and a crushing sense of helplessness swallowed me whole.

"Help!"

A bloodcurdling scream ripped through the night sky.

The crowd stirred.

My head snapped up. At a window on the twenty-eighth floor, a man was shouting with everything he had.

Half his body was blackened by smoke, his voice hoarse.

"Please, I'm begging you! Save us!"

Flames licked out of the window frame behind him and set his clothes on fire.

"Quick! Get the air cushion out!" I roared, already moving to run over.

Two of the guys instinctively moved with me.

"Stop right there!" Vince bellowed. "Anyone who moves an inch is out of a job tomorrow!"

The two firefighters froze in their tracks.

I turned around and glared at Vince. "Someone's about to die! Can't you see that?"

"I see it. So what?"

"You..."

"Blake, did you forget who put you in that uniform?" He sneered. "Me! I'm the one who pulled you out of the reserves!

"I put you up there, and I can bring you right back down!"

He was telling the truth.

Three years ago, I'd been a green kid. He'd noticed me and fast-tracked me out of a whole pack of rookies.

I'd always thought he genuinely saw something in me.

Only now did I understand. All he'd ever needed was an obedient dog.

"Captain! Please! Let's save the people first!" Even Larry was frantic now, practically begging.

"Shut up!" Vince ignored him completely.

He watched the desperate man at the window with obvious interest.

"Look at him. Poor guy. But what can you do? Director Prescott's niece is livestreaming."

He turned to me with a cruel smile. "Blake, tell me. Isn't this just fate?"

I ignored him.

I took off my helmet and threw it on the ground.

Then I started stripping off my turnout gear.

"Blake, what are you doing?" Larry was horrified.

"If you won't save them, I will."

I pulled off the heavy jacket until I was down to a thin T-shirt.

"Without orders, I can't go in there as a firefighter. But as a man, I can't stand by and watch someone die right in front of me."

With that, I turned and made for the building entrance.

Vince's face twisted into something ugly.

I stood up and shook his hand. His palm was slick with sweat."Have a seat."The three of us fell into an awkward silence. In the end, it was Director Prescott who broke it."Blake, we came here to say thank you. And to say we're sorry."I was a little confused."Three years ago, Tim had the wrong idea about you." Director Prescott sighed. "After the fire, he wasn't thinking straight. He was convinced that you... that because of your history with Diane, you deliberately..."I understood.I looked at Tim Dillard. He kept his head down, his face flushed bright red."I'm sorry," he said quietly. "Back then, I... I'd lost my mind. I shouldn't have thought that about you."Later, after I read the full investigation report and every witness statement, I realized you were the one... the one who really tried to save them.""I want to apologize for the rotten things I thought back then."With that, he stood up and bowed deeply to me.I didn't move to stop him.I'd earned that bow

I would rather not have had it at all. After the ceremony, Director Prescott asked me to stay behind. He handed me a document."This is your appointment letter as battalion chief of the Calter District Fire Battalion.""You're young, but you step up, and you've got what it takes. You can handle this position."It was an opportunity plenty of people could only dream of.But I shook my head."Director Prescott, I'm sorry. I'd like to request a transfer."Director Prescott was surprised. "Why? You don't want to stay here?""I want to go somewhere nobody knows me," I said quietly. "I want a change of scenery. A fresh start."This city held too many memories for me.My past with Diane. That fire I'd never be able to erase.I was afraid that if I stayed, I'd live in the shadow of that night forever.Director Prescott was silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed. "I understand. Wherever you go, I'll make the arrangements. But, Blake, remember this."He looked at me and spoke

"I'm sorry," Director Prescott said.A high-ranking official was apologizing to an ordinary firefighter like me.My nose stung, and I almost broke down in tears."Now isn't the time for that." I sniffled and pointed at the fire. "Director Prescott, I request permission to lead a team into the building immediately!"The odds were slim, but as long as there was the slightest chance, I couldn't give up.I put my helmet back on and took the forcible entry tool Larry handed me."Team One, with me! Teams Two and Three, keep working it from the outside! Contain the spread!""Yes, sir!"Amid that thunderous shout, I led an assault team into the building, which had turned into a living hell. The stairwell was thick with acrid smoke and scorching heat.Covered by the hose lines, we fought our way up toward the twenty-eighth floor. With every floor we climbed, the temperature rose, and so did the danger. The walls were scorching to the touch, and chunks of burning debris kept dropping

The smile froze on Vince's face.He was completely stunned."Wh... what?" Even his voice was shaking. "Director Prescott's... daughter?""Yes!" The aide was practically stamping his feet. "We came as soon as we heard! Where is she? Has she been rescued?"Vince's lips trembled. He couldn't get a word out.His eyes drifted, almost on their own, toward the balcony on the building next door. The influencer, Abby Ford, seemed to have sensed that something was off over here. She'd stopped her livestream a while ago and was craning her neck, peering our way.Director Prescott's niece... Director Prescott's daughter...He finally understood. He'd bent over backward to suck up, and it had blown up in his face. And not just any blowup. It was the kind that could end him.Director Prescott finally snapped out of his shock. He grabbed Vince by the collar, his eyes bloodshot."Where's my daughter? Where's my grandson? What the hell did you do to them?" he roared in despair.""I... I...

"Stop him!"A few of the guys hesitated, then closed in around me anyway."Move," I said coldly.Nobody moved. They were my brother-in-arms. We'd trained together, answered calls together, and carried fallen comrades out of fires together, never knowing if they'd make it.But now, they'd become a wall standing in my way."Sorry, guys."With a low growl, I put all my strength into it, slammed through the two men in front of me, and charged forward. At that moment, a dark figure rammed hard into my side.It was Vince. He knocked me to the ground.I felt like a few of my ribs might have cracked. The pain knocked the breath right out of me.He straddled me, grabbed my collar, and punched me in the face again and again."You little punk! Give you an inch and you take a mile, huh? Today I'm going to teach you how the world works!"The taste of blood filled my mouth. My vision started to blur. All I could see were my comrades around me, turning their heads away.I saw that i
