Lena’s POV

The townhouse was too quiet.

I lay on the sofa, eyes fixed on the faint glow of the streetlight bleeding through the curtains, but sleep wouldn’t come. My body still buzzed from earlier—from the almost-touch, the almost-kiss, the almost-something I hadn’t let myself imagine in years.

And then his phone rang. Of course it rang.

I squeezed my eyes shut, willing myself not to replay the way he’d pulled back, the frustration carved into his jaw as he answered. Business first. Always business. That was Dominic. That had always been Dominic.

The floor creaked. I stilled. He was coming down the stairs.

I thought he’d go straight to his study, drown himself in contracts and phone calls. Instead, he hesitated, then crossed the room. The air shifted as he stopped near the sofa.

“Lena,” he said softly. “Are you awake?”

I almost pretended not to be. Almost. But the word slipped out. “Yes.”

A pause. Then the cushion dipped under his weight. He sat at the far end, leaving a polite gap be

Dominic’s Pov The river smelled faintly of salt and steel, the breeze tugging at Eliana’s curls as she practically bounced down the pier. The boat loomed ahead—sleek, glass-sided, its decks strung with little golden lights that shimmered against the Thames. “Uncle Dom, is this our ship?” she gasped, hugging Leo tight like the lion might leap into the water without her. “Yes, Captain,” I said, ruffling her hair. “All aboard.” She squealed and darted toward the gangway, Lena jogging to keep her from tripping over her own excitement. I followed slower, my chest tightening—not from the cold, but from the memory of last night. Her face is so close to mine. Her breath mixed with mine. The way her eyes had softened right before my phone dragged me back to reality. And now here we were, pretending nothing had happened. The boat thrummed underfoot as we stepped inside. Eliana plastered herself against the window immediately, pointing at every bridge, every building, her voice a s

Dominic’s POV “Okay, Leo’s had enough fun for today,” Lena said, scooping Eliana up as she hopped off the see-saw. Eliana pouted, clutching her stuffed lion like he’d just survived a battlefield. “But Leo says he wants a snack.” I crouched so we were eye level. “Leo’s right. I know just the place. They make the best hot chocolate in all of London.” Her eyes widened. “Better than Mommy’s?” I glanced at Lena, whose brows arched as if daring me to answer wrong. I smirked. “Different kind of better. You’ll see.” That won me a squeal and an enthusiastic nod. Lena, on the other hand, shook her head. “You’re already spoiling her.” “She deserves it,” I said, meeting her gaze. For a second, her lips parted like she wanted to argue—but she didn’t. Instead, she tucked Eliana closer, letting the silence stretch between us as we walked out of the park and toward the street. ******** The café I chose was small, tucked between a bookstore and a flower shop. Its wide windows let in the weak

Eliana’s nose was practically glued to the glass, her voice tumoring over itself with excitement. “Mommy, look! Another bus! And it’s red too!” I smiled faintly, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. “Sweetheart, all the buses are red here.” “But this one’s shinier!” she argued, hugging Leo like he agreed with her. Dominic chuckled beside her, low and warm, and I caught the way Eliana leaned closer to him. She looked at him the way children were supposed to look at their fathers—like he hung the moon. And the worst part was, he encouraged it. He wasn’t aloof, wasn’t distant. He listened to her every word, nodding as though she was teaching him something. I turned my face to the window, the streets of London rushing past. I shouldn’t have let this happen. A bus ride, pancakes, laughter—it was too easy to fall into the rhythm of something that looked like family. Too easy to forget what he’d done. “Mommy?” Eliana’s voice yanked me back. She tugged my sleeve. “Did you see the

“The Ivy Nest,” the sign read in golden script as we stepped inside. Warm light spilt across velvet chairs, the kind of place that hummed with quiet conversation and the clinking of china. Eliana skipped ahead, dragging Leo by one paw. “It smells like cookies in here, Mommy!” “It smells like coffee,” Lena corrected softly, tugging her scarf loose as she glanced around. “It smells like both,” I said, guiding them to a booth tucked near the window. “Compromise.” Eliana scrambled into the booth, nearly knocking over a polished brass lamp. “I want pancakes! Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes!” Lena sighed, sliding in beside her. “You can’t just have sugar for breakfast.” Eliana pouted dramatically, hugging Leo to her chest. “Leo says pancakes have energy.” I leaned an elbow on the table, fighting a smile. “He’s not wrong.” Lena shot me a look. “Dominic.” “What?” I asked innocently. “She’s got a point.” “He’s got a point,” Eliana corrected with a grin, holding Leo up like a witness.

The townhouse was silent after she left, but I couldn’t make myself move. Her tea sat untouched on the table, still faintly steaming, mocking me with the warmth she had abandoned. I stared at it for too long, jaw tight, my chest heavy with the weight of what almost happened. I had been so close. Close enough to feel her breath, close enough to see her lashes tremble, close enough to believe she might have let me kiss her. And then my phone—my damn phone—had taken the moment from me. I should’ve smashed it against the wall. Instead, I picked it up. Two missed calls, both from my office. A text with red-flag words—urgent, delay, signatures needed. Business. The reason I was here. The excuse I clung to when everything else felt too dangerous. But in that moment, none of it mattered. I didn’t want contracts or negotiations. I wanted her. I ran a hand through my hair, pacing the length of the living room. Guilt gnawed at me, sharp and unrelenting. She had looked at me like she almost

  • The Forgotten wife of the Billionaire    Chapter Thirty Nine (Dual POV)

Dominic’s POV Eliana darted across the grass, Leo bouncing in her arms, her laughter ringing louder than the chatter of tourists scattered across Hyde Park. Every time she spotted a duck, she shrieked with delight, scattering crumbs like a generous queen. I stood a few paces behind, hands buried in my coat pockets. My eyes weren’t really on the swans or the endless stretch of green. They were on her—on Lena. She walked slowly along the path, her hair tugged free by the wind, strands brushing across her cheek. There was something softer in her expression today, something I hadn’t seen in years. I wanted to capture it. To hold it. “She’s never seen swans before,” Lena said suddenly, her voice lilting as she came to stand beside me. “Back home, it’s mostly pigeons and the occasional stubborn rooster.” I chuckled. “Swans are an upgrade, then.” Her lips curved faintly. “Definitely.” For a moment, we just stood there, shoulder to shoulder. Not touching, but closer than we’d been in
