Chapter 66

By the time we stop, dusk has sunk its claws into the sky. The air is colder here, thicker, like it remembers the kind of magic that doesn’t die just because time passes. The trees are taller, older. Watching.

I step out of the car and the earth feels soft beneath my boots, the smell of damp moss and pine pressing in close. Shaun is teaching Thalia how to check the perimeter with her senses, her glowing eyes looking into the distance. Sofia mutters something under her breath and stretches like she’s trying to shake the road off her bones.

Atlas opens the trunk and starts unloading gear. A firestarter kit. Bedrolls. A blanket he immediately throws in my direction.

“You’re sleeping first,” he says, not looking at me.

"Atlas."

“Kaya.” His voice is a low warning. He finally looks up, eyes fierce, and I see now an Alpha standing in front of me. “No arguments. You rest. That’s the deal.”

"I can keep the first watch." Cole says as he comes to stand, towering over me, tall, but not taller tha

“Now, can I ask a question?” I ask Amara. My voice quieter now, but there’s an edge under it. If I’m agreeing to let her follow us into the heart of a forest soaked in witchcraft, I might as well start mapping the shape of the blade she’s holding. “Why were you helping the rogues?”“The answer is very simple, Kaya.” She doesn’t even blink. “I helped them because your kind turned their back on them ages ago. No wolf, from any pack, has helped them.” Her words slice through the dim room like a knife. My fingers curl against my thigh. And the thought that the other Alphas want to take a part of their territory now really stings. Even if we are from different packs we were raised with the thought we were all Moon Goddess's children. We didn't do anything for our brothers and sisters then."Have you ever been in the rogue territory? The old Silver Cressett." Amara asks as she walks over to a shelf filled with crystals and packs a few into her over-the-shoulder bag. “No. Never. We are… not

The darkness presses in, thick and heavy, like sinking beneath the surface of a deep, still lake. Time warps, seconds stretch into eternity, and the edges of my consciousness fray, tangled between the threads of my own memories and something else, something foreign, before the light calls back to me and I again feel the weight of my head as I lift it from the table. The sound of water pouring confuses me until my vision clears and I see Amara pouring tea into two cups."What did you do to me?" I ask as I rub my forehead and the edge of my eyes. "Please tell me you are alright," Saf begs. "For a moment I couldn't feel you.""I'm fine." I reassure her even if I'm not sure."I had to access your soul in order to search it." Amara says casually. "Trust me, it's much worse if I do it while you are awake." "So turning my brain into liquid is better?" I ask.Amara glances up from the teapot at me, the faintest curve tugging at the corner of her mouth, not a smile exactly, but something wry

Atlas stares at the place where Cole just vanished, blinking once, twice, like he’s trying to make sense of it. His hand flexes, fingers twitching like claws just beneath the skin.“What the hell was that?” he growls, stepping in front of me. His voice drops low, dangerous. “Kaya, don’t...”“I’m not doing anything,” I murmur back, though my eyes are still on the tree. The bark where Cole disappeared ripples faintly, as if it’s breathing. Warm light pulses in the grooves, veins glowing like they’re carrying liquid gold.Amara tilts her head, watching us both. “The door listens,” she says. “It opens only for those who believe it can.”“That’s not an answer,” Atlas snaps. “That’s a riddle.”“It’s both,” Amara says calmly.I step forward before Atlas can. The tree hums when I get close. Not a sound exactly, more like a vibration in my ribs, in my teeth. It’s the same sensation I get sometimes before a nightmare starts, or before a vision hits. Like the world holding its breath.Atlas’s ha

"We can take her," Saf says confidently. The witch smiles but she doesn’t move closer, but the air between us seems to shrink anyway. I can feel her gaze settle on me like hands, brushing over my face, my shoulders, the edges of my thoughts. Behind me, Atlas growls. Not like a threat. More like a warning. Or both. "Relax, Alpha." She says. "If anyone should be mad, it should be me." She says, then looks back at me. "You disturbed my harvest." “What do you want?” I ask. My voice is steadier than I expect it to be. She tilts her head again, birdlike. Curious. “To see you,” she says simply. “To look at the girl who dreams like the old ones do. You don’t know what you are, do you?” I flinch. Just a little. But she sees it. I know she does. “I’m not anything,” I say. “Ahh,” she hums. “You’re everything. That’s the problem.” She turns then, walking in a slow circle around me, never stepping too close. The frost doesn’t crunch beneath her feet. It just... yields. Like the e

The road stretches ahead, dark and narrow, the trees closing in like sentinels guarding some secret. Atlas drives with a quiet precision, his hands firm on the wheel, face neutral. Beside him, I find myself caught between the quiet hum of the engine and the even quieter weight of not know what to say.Behind us, Thalia and Sofia are talking. Not about anything important, at least not to me. The casual banter between them is a stark contrast to the quiet intensity of the front seat. Thalia’s voice carries with that mix of levity and sharpness she always has, while Sofia’s clipped responses echo back just as dry. They talk about everything from the lack of coffee to the weather, but there’s an undertone to it all, a way they can’t quite shake the rest of the world out of their minds. The weight of the forest around us presses down like the first breath before a storm. But it’s not the storm they’re worried about. It’s everything they left behind.Shaun watches outside the window, his bod
