Chapter 10: Elias

Goddess when you told me she was my mate did you mean for me to find her infuriating? I was floored by the initial attraction and I couldn't be fucking happier but she is such a chore! She's fighting me every step of the way. I'm trying to help her. I'm trying to save her. Why is she being so difficult?

Alpha, I heard Hugo's deep voice come down the bond. Her car has been located.

Funny, I scoffed silently to myself. He was the one to find it? Her stuff? I growled back hoping to be able to calm my annoyance enough to not give anything away to him.

It is empty. The car was abandoned near the edge of town back window was broken out.

They took everything? He could feel my anger seething through the line.

Yes sir. Hugo always kept things so professional.

Looking over at Freya I sighed and collapsed my head into my hands. She was never going to think this wasn't my pack.

Can you keep an eye on her? I spoke to Andre through the bond. She seems to like you.

Me watch her? He laughed.

Just do it.

Or you could watch her and trust Oliver and myself to investigate the car?

I wasn’t afraid to be alone with her, I just didn't understand her right now. She wasn’t thinking like a werewolf she was more interested in hating me. Maybe, I began with a sigh, Being away from me is what she needs right now. I may have come on a little heavy.

A little? He snapped his head up and looked between us. I don’t know the threshold for it but I think you are one ransom note away from this being considered a kidnapping.

What do you want from me? I’m doing the best I can.

He rolled his eyes, I'll watch her, but if she wakes up what should I do?

I shrugged and pointed to the kitchen, she’ll be hungry. Maybe start there.

Anything important I should know?

Shes a fucking trickster!! Oliver shouted finally making himself known. Between the three of us we nearly always had the open link established. These two were probably the only ones I trusted enough to constantly be able to reach me so freely. I told you I didn't lose her! Once again he was back on that kick that it was all her fault. Honestly at this point I believed him. She was a fucking sly fox.

Enough! I groaned, hoping to avoid excessive noise in my head. Oliver you and I are going to investigate the car. Andre, she doesn't leave. Anyone have any questions?

Frustration looks terrible on you. Andre laughed and I saw a smirk from the corner of his mouth as he leaned back.

Not a question. I grumbled hitting his forehead as I passed.

Outside Oliver met me and we took his car out to where Hugo specified over the bond. Already a group of police where there Hugo, tall, blonde with graying hair was dressed to blend in. He was our liaison with the local authorities.

“Give us fifteen minutes.” I walked passed trying to sort through the new scents and the old. All of her clothes everything anyone needed to track her was taken. She'd never be safe again. What else could have been in her car though?

I searched through the glove box it was also empty. They really took everything out of this car.

“Says its a rental.” Oliver looked over the report being written, “I mean that's not necessarily good news.”

“They can get more information about her.” I sighed. “Call the rental company see what they are willing to give out over the phone.”

He nodded and took out his cellphone.

I turned my attention to Hugo, “how'd you find it?”

“Someone called it in. They passed it coming into the city. Doesn't look like they tried to hide it either.”

“Bold of them, like they wanted us to find it.” I growled and sniffed every inch of that car. Too much of her had been in here.

“How are you planning on breaking the news to her?” Oliver hung up the phone. “Those guys gave me whatever I asked for and said I wasn’t the first one who called.”

“Where was the car rented from?”

He shrugged, “About a half a days drive, far out of werewolf territory. It’s near the coast too.”

Fucking wonderful. Andre, I barked down the bond. You’ll-

I’ll do no such thing. He snapped back quickly, you’re going to come home, take her out to fucking dinner and break the news like the grownup you are. She likes me, I’m not going to be the barrer of bad news.

She doesn’t have clothes. I hissed.

So then bring a pizza back. I’ll take extra pepperoni on mine.

I looked to Oliver who shrugged.

Is she awake yet? I had to change the topic quickly, Andre was just inches from juicy gossip, I could feel it slowly building.

Nope, just sleeping.

I knew she was. I could feel the attraction stronger now. There was little doubt in my mind that if I could look into her head I’d see a dream about me.

Okay… Andre laughed nervously, not so peacefully sleeping. She’s a fucking groaner.

Groaner? Oliver looked to me and I turned my head down avoiding having to look at him. Oh fuck she’s getting feelings for you!

Me! Andre snapped, That’s practically illegal! She’s a relative. I swear I didn’t do it on purpose! Seriously Elias, don’t fucking kill me-

It’s not you! Oliver huffed. She’s getting feelings for Elias.

Oh thank the fucking goddess! Pay up little man. I told you so.

Fuck you! Oliver snapped, it’s not like it’s official yet.

Oh no, Andre laughed I could hear the victory in his voice, it took less than a damn day. I give it a week at most before they're humping in the halls.

That’s still my brother you tasteless asshole!

Shouldn’t have taken the losing bet.

“Sir,” Hugo stepped back up bowing with his arm across his chest, I was just thankful I could bow out of the discussion. One more comment and they both were going to need medical attention. “The police need to do their work. There’s been too much the last couple of hours, and the human death last night. We’re having a hard time coming up with excuses. They fear unrest in the city.”

I nodded and flicked my head instructing Oliver to follow me. “First thing you and Andre are going shopping for clothes for her and anything else she’ll need while staying with me.”

He nodded, “I’m going to insist on Rose instead-”

“Do whatever you want but you come back to the apartment before dinner. Got it?”

He nodded again.

“If someone says anything negative about her I want to hear about it. Keep your ears alert in the den.”

“Bro-”

I snapped around glaring with my teeth barred.

“Listen, I get it, but can I be real for a moment?”

My voice went low nearly to a whisper, “You can tread carefully.”

“Okay, well she wanted to reject you. She pretty much did in front of a fair few pack members earlier. Do you really think it’s worth it-”

“Stop talking.” My teeth clenched together as I ground them tightly. “Do what I asked. I’ll walk home from here.”

“It’s a trek-”

“I said stop talking.” My wolf was on the surface being held back only because he was my brother. If anyone else in the pack would have said the same thing they’d have been dead. I could feel Freya more now. She was never going to admit it of course but I felt a little chip growing in her barrier. Alone time was just what we needed.

-Freya-There was a long bang on the door. Like someone was trying to break it down. That's what caused me to wake up. Why was that what got me to move? I felt too exhausted. I knew I had been sleeping for a long time but I couldn't recall anything. Two figures were blurry in my vision as I reached out. “ALICE!” A young voice gasped and turned the taller one around. “You’re awake!” Alice laughed, “Oh thank the goddess!”I nodded, "what's going on?” Another bang followed by both girls turning back to the door.“It's breaking in!” “It's fine. Elias will protect us.” Alice patted the smaller figure and my vision was finally coming back to reveal it was that young girl. I just couldn't remember- no. Mallory was her name. She was the youngest orphan. Why were they here though? And where was I? I looked around seeing so many vases filled with fox gloves. But how? Why? Shaking my head I heard the beeping of a monitor picking up speed. Looking down I saw the IV in my arm too. “Okay,” I

It was as if her legs just gave up. I had been watching her so I knew she wasn’t tired, this was something else. One moment she was there, she was smiling, she was happy! The next nothing. It was as if someone had flipped a switch and suddenly she wasn't there anymore. My wolf was going crazy unable to sense her. Constantly I had to reassure myself that she was still here. I was touching her, she wasn't gone she was just sleeping. Shes not sleeping! I heard myself growling as if this could have been magical. Maybe this was divine retribution. Me daring to go against the goddess and her ultimate plan. “We can get her to a hospital.” Andre didn't dare touch her, she was in my arms and that's where I was going to protect her with my life. He knew if he even tried moving closer while she was in this state I'd attack. My wolf was right at the surface now, I could feel my canines extending just looking for the opportunity to pierce the skin of someone who thought they could move again

Everyone dispersed in a huff making the grey lifeless room even more like a morgue. “What’s the real reason you’re here?” Elias spoke once the crowd left taking a seat on an empty crate in the corner. “Oliver brought me,” I shrugged and took another survey of the room. The kids were still on the step but they seemed to be lost in conversation and Elias didn’t seem to be paying them any mind. I couldn’t shake the feeling they were watching me, “Can we talk alone?” I sighed “Follow me.” He nodded and went back outside. “Oliver!” he called back, “Make sure the kids eat lunch.” The only ones that were around here now were the kids, everyone else had left in a hurry. It felt like any amount of time they were forced to spend here was a waste. I had come to know the signs, growing up it was awkward for people to be around me. They heard I didn’t have a mother and suddenly it was like they were worried I was going to force them to take her place. He led me outside and around the back

I passed before the hour was done. I don't understand why he was so persistent but I had lost consciousness sometime around the forty minute mark. When I woke back up he was just gone. I took a shower and got dressed, stumbling down the stairs to find Oliver and Andre sitting at the dining table playing cards.“Hey cousin.” Andre smiled and I could feel he was so desperately wanting to comment on what happened between me and Elias. “How has your day been?” “Oh for fucks sake!” Oliver huffed and rolled his eyes back to me, “I'll fucking throw up if you two say one damn thing.” “Where's Elias?” I took a seat next to Oliver who seemed like the lesser of two evils at the moment. “Pack business.” Oliver answered shortly. “I figured, guess that means you two are babysitting me?”Andre kept looking at his hand of cards as he smirked, “Just minding the house since Rose is at the bar.” I nodded, “What'd you give to Elias this morning?” Andre’s head finally snapped up, his eyes wide, “I

By the time we got back to the house I was exhausted. I remembered getting to the balcony but everything else was a blur. Elias had offered to pick me up and put me on the balcony and I think I accepted it. Everything afterward is what I questioned. Playing with a little section of soft hair that tangled the tips of my fingers I wasn’t brought out of sleep quickly, more like it was a lull out of my slumber that cradled me into security. I moved up and down rhythmically as strong deep breaths blended through his chest. “Hmmm…” he cooed quietly. I didn't open my eyes. Last I remembered we were both naked so I didn't need to know if he was still because I definitely was. Thankfully, it seemed one of us had enough strength and common sense to put a blanket between us. The sun was well up and I heard the common sounds of the forest, birds, the trees shifting in the wind, and- the howling of wolves?“Damn,” Elias sighed as the howling grew louder. “I guess I did tell them to meet today.

So is this what it looks like to have control? He sniffed at the phone once more before looking back at me. “I got upset.” I shrugged and finally was able to make it back to my feet. “Clearly.” Elias was sitting on the chair next out of view. I was actually thankful he maintained a bit of modesty. “I really don't want to hear it right now.” I sighed falling backward onto the bed. “What do you want then?” He was sitting so far from me on the opposite side of the room looking back at me his head cocked to the side. “I don't know.” I did though, I wanted what I couldn't have. I wanted my god to answer me and to stop the goddess from trying to control me. “Get up.” Elias ordered and walked back out to the balcony. My eyes couldn't help but follow him. “What?” Sitting back up, I forced my eyes to only focus on the back of his head. That exposed backside though, that was daring me to look more south. “I thought I was giving orders here.” “Get up, shift into your fox and follow
