The chandelier above me was the size of a car. I looked at it for a moment, then out across the tables at five hundred people enjoying themselves.

Every table was full.

They were cabinet secretaries and shipping magnates. There were two men who owned news broadcast networks. The kind of people who made decisions about the world in the morning and forgot they'd made them by lunch.

They were here, spending their precious and expensive time, to celebrate Mark, my brilliant husband.

Mark Hudson, chief executive of Jupiter Inc., a manufacturing giant with plants on four continents. One of the richest and most important men in the country, and I had been his wife for five years.

I had taken the role seriously and I was proud of it. The house. The calendar. The appearances. The endless small managements that kept a man like that looking effortless.

And tonight was mine.

I chose the room. I did the layout and the seating and the courses. I sat with the sommelier for two hours over the champagne. I picked the photographers and the girl who ran the social media accounts. I told her the kind of moments she was allowed to post.

Five hundred people, and I knew where every one of them was sitting and why.

I was extremely good at this.

Mark used to tell people so. Sarah could run a country, he'd say, with his hand on the small of my back, and I would smile and say he was exaggerating, and I would be warm for hours afterward.

After the third course, Mark stood up and rang his glass with a fork. The room came down to a hush in about four seconds. That's what it's like around men like that.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming. It's an honour to be celebrated by people like you."

I was smiling up at him. I was genuinely proud of who he had become and what he had achieved. I had stood by him from the very beginning, when he had nothing but ambition.

"I'm glad we're all together tonight," Mark said. "Because there's something I need to say."

The room shifted. A murmur went across the tables. I turned my head — he hadn't told me about a speech.

"I wanted tonight to be a happy occasion, but I'm afraid it's going to be the worst night of my life."

The murmur got louder.

"Mark," I said under my breath. "What is this? What's going on?"

He didn't look at me. Something dropped in my stomach.

He put his hand flat on the tablecloth and let his face fall into something sorrowful.

"Six weeks ago," Mark said, "I found out that my wife, Sarah, had been having an affair."

The room went off like a dropped tray.

"Mark! What are you talking about?" It wasn't a whisper anymore.

"I was devastated." He raised his voice slightly over the room. "But I'm not a man who makes accusations he can't stand behind. So I'm going to show you what I was shown. What you're about to see is explicit in nature, so be warned."

The screen behind the stage came on.

I don't know who was working the lights. I had arranged every other second of that evening myself.

The video wasn't good quality, but it was unmistakably a hotel room, the kind that costs a thousand dollars a night. A woman with my hair, my build, my back, in profile, with a man I have never met in my life.

They were naked. The sound of it filled the room.

Five hundred people watched it and I watched it with them. My hands went cold on the tablecloth. Time stopped moving and I was somewhere underneath it.

I stood up after ten seconds.

"That isn't me." My voice came out wrong, too high, too loud. "That's not me — that's not me, that isn't—"

Nobody was looking at the screen anymore.

Their faces were all pointed at me, and I have never seen anything like what was on them. Not anger. Something much worse — pure, unaltered disgust.

"Why are you doing this?" I turned on him. "Mark. Why are you lying to these people? What did I ever do to you?"

"Please don't embarrass yourself further, Sarah," he said gently. "You've hurt me enough."

"Mark —"

"The sooner you admit it, the sooner this stops hurting."

The video was still playing.

Somebody near the front had their phone up. Then another one. Then a whole table of them, screens tilted toward me, and by the time I understood what was happening there were three hundred cameras in that room and every single one of them was pointed at my face.

It had been three years since I moved back in with my parents. It hadn't been easy, but they took me in graciously and helped me get back on my feet. I got a job as a clerk at a local law firm and had my son, Sammy.Life was peaceful in that town. Everyone knew about the incident, but nobody asked questions, out of respect for my father. They took me back the way they had before I left.Weeks after Mark's disappearance, the reporters found me anyway. They stood outside the house and followed me to work and asked me the same thing every morning. I never gave them anything, and eventually they gave up, and after a while they stopped coming to the town at all.The question was always the same. What did I think had happened to him.The case was still open. I never got a call from the estate. The search never turned up anything. Nobody knew where he was, and he was going to be declared dead very soon. But I rarely thought about him anymore. There was a time I wanted a way to pay back every

"You are Sarah Hudson?" the man said, tapping his pen on the table. He was the owner of the burger place I'd applied to as a dishwasher. We were in his office, a cramped room with stacks of boxes in the corner and a TV humming on the wall."Yes, I am.""You're that billionaire ex, right? The one with the video?""Uh… yeah." I didn't have the energy to tell him the truth.A small smirk formed on his lips.“I gotta tell you, you looked amazing in it. You got techniques, for sure.”I didn’t reply. I wanted to go home and stand in the shower until the water ran cold and washed away all the filths that just stuck to my skin."Anyways… Can you explain to me why you're applying for a job as a dishwasher?"I went quiet. Maybe I should have told him the reason I was there was that I got nothing from the divorce and I needed to survive. I'd applied for fifty jobs in two weeks and they either ignored me completely or said they didn't want that kind of reputation attached to their company. But I

The garage door was up when I got there, which meant somebody had told Mark I was coming.Eleven boxes against the far wall, next to the pressure washer. Brown tape, done properly. My name on the side of each one in handwriting that wasn't mine.I had two in the trunk of my car when I heard the door into the mansion."You could have called," Mark said from the doorway."I called four times.""Did you?" He came down the two steps. "Take whatever you want. I'm not going to argue about lamps.""I want my grandmother's clock.""Then take the clock. I don't care. It's worthless to me."I went back for another box. He didn't move out of the way, so I went around him. I gathered my things quietly, which seemed to agitate him."Do you know why I cheated on you?""No. I'm not interested in knowing why a man is unfaithful to his wife. It could be a million things. A tale as old as time." I set the box down. "The one thing I do know is that it isn't my fault.""The arrogance. You've got nothing

"Where's your representation, Mrs. Hudson?"The man across the table was middle-aged, in a dark expensive suit, undoubtedly Mark's lawyer. Mark sat beside him, staring at me, his face unreadable."I don't have one. I only have this."I lifted the legal pad I'd bought at a store an hour earlier. It made a sound when I dropped it on the table. It wasn't for lack of trying. I'd called eleven firms. Nine said no, and two wanted a retainer that was more than everything I had. They all gave me the same reason: my reputation was finished, and taking me on against the head of Jupiter Inc. was more risk than my money was worth."Right, then. Shall we?"Mark was pleasant about all of it. That's the part people don't understand. Nobody raised their voice. Everyone was very pleasant."Marital home. Titled solely to Mr. Hudson before the marriage," the lawyer said."That's fine," I replied."Vehicles the same.""Okay.""Kenmore was purchased during the marriage, but under the prenuptial schedule i

I forcefully dragged him out of the hall, got him into the first room I found, a small sitting room off the east corridor, and shut the door on the guests who were still buzzing about what had just happened."Mark, What the hell just happened?! Where did that video come from?!"My voice came out unsteady. I hated it."It doesn't matter where it came from." He wasn't looking at me. "It was you. It was unmistakably you.""It wasn't me! I swear to God I have never met that man in my life!"He didn't answer. He put his hands in his trouser pockets and stood there like a stone, his gaze wandering at nothing in particular. After the unbearable moment of silence I crossed the room and took hold of his arms."Please believe me! Five years, Mark. Five years and I have never lied to you once, not about anything, not even small things." I was begging now, and the tears had started. I was gripping him hard enough to feel the seam of his jacket. "I don't know how that video exists. I don't know wh
