Chapter 1

I lay unconscious in the forest at the pack's border for half the night before a patrol guard found me and carried me back to pack territory.

Lying on the bed in the healing room, my calf still throbbed with a dull ache.

I touched my belly and closed my eyes, and all I could see was Lucas choosing to leave me behind without a second thought when the attack happened yesterday.

For the past six months, ever since the day he brought Vivian back to the territory, my hopes had been worn away, bit by bit, through countless moments of being overlooked.

I forced my weak body out of bed and leaned against the wall as I went to find the healer for some pain-relieving herbs.

Passing the main hall on the east side, I heard Vivian's soft, spoiled complaining drifting from inside.

"Alpha, this calming herb brew is so bitter, I can't drink it..."

I stopped and peered through the half-open door.

Lucas was half-kneeling beside the table, a warm stone bowl in his hands, patiently stirring it with a wooden spoon.

Then he pulled a small jar of wild honey royal jelly from the pouch at his waist.

He scooped out a full spoonful and stirred it into the bitter brew.

"Drink it, Vivian. I added honey to the medicine. It won't be bitter."

Vivian sat in the cushioned chair, obediently cradling the bowl. She took a small sip, then lifted her tear-shimmering eyes to him.

"Thank you, Alpha... but this honey is so precious. You prepared it carefully for Eileen, didn't you? Will she be angry with me if she finds out?"

Lucas shook his head gently.

"She's the Luna of the pack, the tribe's witch. She understands the bigger picture. She won't hold a small thing like this against you."

I stood outside the hall, the cold wind cutting through my thin clothes, and my chest went numb.

Last winter, I'd performed a blessing ritual for the pack and drained myself so badly I came down with a high fever. I couldn't even swallow water.

Lucas had stayed up all night watching over me just like that, braving a blizzard to smoke out a wild beehive on the cliff's edge.

His hands had been swollen and red from the stings, all just to coax a single sip of medicine into me.

Back then, he'd kissed my forehead with red-rimmed eyes and sworn he'd always keep me at the center of his heart.

Now, that singular tenderness had been handed over, untouched, to another woman.

Lucas sensed the presence outside the door and turned to look at me.

A flicker of panic crossed his eyes. He set down the stone bowl, stood, and strode quickly out of the hall.

He pulled the door shut behind him, blocking out the warmth inside, and reached for my shoulder.

"Eileen, you're awake? Is your wound still hurting?"

I turned aside to avoid his touch, my gaze landing on the smear of yellow honey at his collar.

Lucas's hand hung frozen in midair. He pressed his lips together, his expression a little unnatural.

"It happened so fast. Vivian was too far from the safe zone. Her brother died taking a fatal claw strike for me during the pack war. I swore I'd protect her."

He wasn't looking me in the eye, his thumb rubbing unconsciously at the knife hilt at his waist.

"Besides, you're the tribe's witch. You can protect yourself. That's why I reacted on instinct and got her out first. I thought you'd be able to catch up after."

"Stop sulking. Rest well tonight. Tomorrow I'll have two fine snow-fox pelts sent to you for a cloak."

If this were before, I might have still choked back tears and demanded to know why he was so sure that I, wounded as I was, could survive alone against a pack of wolves.

But now, looking at the indifference in his eyes, I didn't even have the energy to open my mouth.

I didn't argue. I turned and walked back to my own chamber.

From the very bottom of the cabinet, I took out a sealed little obsidian vial. Inside was the bond-breaking potion I'd brewed three days ago.

I'd still been hesitating then, still clinging to the hope that he might remember even a trace of what we'd once had.

But the biting cold of the forest last night had woken me up completely.

Once I drank it, on the full moon three days from now, the mate bond between Lucas and me would shatter completely, beyond any repair.

I pulled out the wooden stopper and tipped the bitter potion down my throat in one go.

A burning pain seared up my throat. I clutched my chest and collapsed onto the bed, but my heart was utterly calm.

Lucas, since you've already broken every promise you ever made.

Then three days from now, I'll give you back your freedom. For good.

After the assembly ended, Lucas didn't leave the White Stone Plaza. That night, rain came down in sheets. He just knelt there ramrod straight outside the Silvermoon Pack's camp, letting the freezing rain hammer down on him.Cedric walked into the tent and handed me a cup of warm water."Lucas has been kneeling out there for three hours, shouting that he wants to see you. Do you want me to have someone throw him out?"I closed the medical text in my hands and shook my head."Leave him. He's just an outsider who means nothing to me. If he dies of exposure out there, that's his own business."But half an hour later, a shrill scream and the sounds of a fight suddenly came from outside the tent.I frowned, threw on my cloak, and stepped out.Through the pouring rain, I saw Vivian, who was supposed to be confined back in Blackstone territory, had somehow slipped out. She'd bribed several Blackstone renegades and was trying to force her way into my tent to set it on fire. And Lucas, kneeling

The Northern Wolf Clan Assembly was held at the White Stone Plaza in the neutral zone. The Alphas of every major pack gathered there with their best warriors, the atmosphere lively but taut.I wore a white witch's robe specially made by the Silvermoon Pack, with the silver-wolf cloak Cedric had given me draped over my shoulders, and stood quietly beside the Silvermoon seats. The moment I entered, I felt a burning gaze lock onto me.Lucas came striding toward me with the Blackstone Pack's people in tow.In just three days, he'd visibly wasted away. Heavy dark circles ringed his eyes, and messy stubble had sprouted along his jaw."Eileen!"Lucas rushed up to me and reached for my wrist, but Cedric stepped forward and blocked him.Two formidable Alpha auras collided. Lucas was forced back half a step."Cedric, this is a family matter between me and my Luna. You'd better get out of the way!"Lucas looked at me, his eyes red-rimmed, his tone carrying a pleading he didn't even notice himself

The Silvermoon territory was even more comfortable than I'd imagined.Cedric had settled me in a standalone herb lodge on the east side of the territory. It came fully equipped with every tool for making medicine, and he'd even assigned two nimble wolf-girl attendants to look after my food and daily needs.Over the next two days, I rested and healed in the lodge. At the same time, I used the frostgrass unique to Silvermoon territory to brew several batches of ointment that healed external wounds fast, and handed them over to Cedric's guard unit. That afternoon, I was out in the courtyard drying herbs when Cedric walked in.He was carrying a steaming bowl of snow-deer bone broth and set it down on the stone table like it was the most natural thing in the world."The healer says your body is badly weakened. I had them add warming purple ginseng to this. Drink it while it's hot."I set down the bamboo sieve in my hands, wiped my hands dry, and walked over to sit at the table."Thank you,

Lucas's POVWhen Lucas and his men charged into the river valley, all they found were a few rogue carcasses on the ground."Alpha! There are signs of a fight here!"The guard captain examined the rogues' wounds, and his expression shifted drastically."Every one of these rogues was killed in a single strike. Whoever did this is monstrously strong. There's no way the Luna could've pulled this off!"Lucas strode over and looked down at the white powder scattered across the ground. It was the protective poison powder Eileen always carried. She'd just been ambushed by rogues here!Lucas's heart clenched tight, his breathing turning ragged.Eileen's leg was still injured, her right hand was burned to a bloody mess by the coals, and she'd just suffered the backlash of the bond-breaking. How could she possibly have fought off that many rogues? He searched frantically through the surrounding brush until he spotted a trail of blood drops beneath a tree trunk. His legs went weak, and he nearly d

After walking past the borders of the Blackstone Pack, I didn't stop. I followed the winding river valley north. The bond-breaking potion had severed every connection between Lucas and me, but the backlash from the shattered bond had left my body weak to the extreme.A dull, dragging ache pulsed low in my belly.I stopped and leaned against the trunk of a massive fir tree, my hand moving to cradle my stomach.Just hold on a little longer, baby. Mama's taking you somewhere safe soon.Right then, several pairs of glowing green eyes lit up in the bushes ahead.Four or five sturdy rogues burst from the shadows, low, threatening growls rumbling in their throats as they closed in on me step by step.I gripped the packet of poison powder in my sleeve, my back pressed flat against the tree trunk, and forced myself to stay calm.My magic was nearly drained from the bond-breaking. If I fought head-on, I wouldn't last long at all.The lead rogue saw how weak I was. It kicked off the ground and lu

Lucas's POVThe crowd below the platform erupted into an uproar.Lucas dropped to one knee, gasping for breath, cold sweat sliding down his temples."Alpha, what's wrong?"Vivian rushed over in a panic to steady his arm.But Lucas couldn't hear her at all.He clutched at the front of his shirt. It was hollow there. The mate bond that had once bound him so tightly to Eileen was gone. Completely gone. How could he not sense Eileen's presence anymore? Was she still angry, using some witch's secret art to block his perception?Lucas gritted his teeth and snatched up the crown from the ground. He paid Vivian no mind at all. He vaulted off the platform and sprinted toward the chamber."Alpha! The investiture isn't finished yet!"Vivian's voice shrieked after him, but Lucas's figure had already vanished into the night. The head elder climbed onto the platform, his face ugly, and muttered under his breath:"It's got to be that witch Eileen again, messing with dark arts in her chamber, delibera
