Chapter 1

Author: Victory Cake
Enya Answorth was a year younger than me and Damien, but we'd been in the same class.

Her family had money, and as an only child, she grew up spoiled and somewhat arrogant.

Her mom only had her. Same as mine.

We lived in the same dorm building for years. No way I got this wrong.

The comments kept pouring in.

That med student said he was heading to the body freezer to check.

[The profile pic flashed too fast. I need to see her in person.]

[I've got chills... If this is real, then the girl Damien ditched Sadie for is...]

[Ahhh! Jesus, protect me!]

I stood alone at the center of the stage. Camera flashes burned my eyes.

My parents looked wrecked. Whispers and pitying looks scraped over me, sharp and constant.

I clenched my jaw and ran. The cab driver kept giving me weird looks as I rushed straight to the airport.

Through the arrivals hall glass, I saw Damien had Enya pulled tight against him.

She looked soft, slim—normal. Her face was buried in his chest, mostly hidden.

Her small hand slid under his coat, restless.

At first, I didn't even know what I felt. Somehow, I'd followed him here.

I watched him carry her suitcase like it mattered, sling an arm around her, and let her take the passenger seat that used to be mine.

I watched him take her to a restaurant he was always "too busy" for with me. He cut her steak, fed her, looked more satisfied than if he'd eaten it himself.

I watched him book her a room, swipe the card, and walk in with her like they were some perfect couple.

My heart went cold.

Damien didn't care how I faced our wedding guests. Didn't care if I was humiliated. The second Enya showed up, she was all he saw.

But was she really Enya?

In a daze, I went home and lay there until two in the morning. I'd just started to drift off when the bedroom door clicked.

Through half-closed eyes, I saw Damien.

He stiffened. Then, when I didn't move, he relaxed.

He lay down. Enya's jasmine scent drifted over, mixed with that faint, dirty smell.

His phone buzzed.

Through my lashes, I glanced at his phone.

More messages from Enya:

[Damien, are you asleep?]

[You have to come to my studio tomorrow at noon. I've got a big surprise for you.]

[I'm going to shower too. Too bad you left in such a rush—you missed out, hehe.]

When I didn't answer, Yvette didn't rush. She started talking, like she was alone. What she said threw me.She was obsessed with Enya. It wasn't admiration—it was something darker. Unhinged.Back when she was drifting overseas, she'd been broke. Starving. She survived by copying Enya's paintings. She pitied Enya. Said Adrien Laurent was just a greedy businessman—kept all the money from her work, donated her body to save on burial costs."I loved her. I'm going to live as her!" Her voice went sharp, shaking. "I spent everything to look like her before I came back. I picked Damien to make quick money. I'll buy Adrien's gallery and leave him with nothing. And you—Sadie, right? You were her classmate. This is all your fault!"Her eyes burned—obsession, hate, all of it twisted together.I didn't have the energy to care about her warped devotion. One thought, loud and clear—Run.Yvette saw right through me.She smiled, warped and cold. The venue fell apart. One shock after another—my head couldn't keep up. No reason to stay.I turned and slipped into the crowd. Pushed through, fought my way out of the auction hall.Cool night air hit my face, clearing my head a little. My phone buzzed.I checked it. A reply from Adrien Laurent—Enya's husband. The email read—[Salut Ms. Somerset. Glad you still remember my wife. Sadly, she passed after her heart surgery failed. She was kind, and her last wish was to donate her body. She was an incredible painter. At my gallery, she had a lot of fans—everyone called her the beautiful painter. Some admirers even copied her work, her style, even the way she dressed and acted. We all loved her, didn't we?]By the time I hit that last line, my emotions were a mess.Enya used to be so proud back in school. Now... she was completely different.Still, something in me stirred.I couldn't make sense of it.Early the next morning, my phone lit up—99+ unread messages.Damien hitting "

Damien stared at Enya's photo on his phone with "Yvette Keane" stamped beside it. The panic on his face drained out, leaving nothing. His lips moved. No sound. He didn't need words. He knew something was off.He looked at me, almost begging to come to the charity auction.I shot him a cold look and brushed past him, flagging a cab.As we pulled away, his silver Bentley slid into view in the rearview mirror—right on our tail, not letting go.The venue was packed. One sweep of my eyes, and I found her.Enya.She looked unreal tonight—sleek gown, effortless, every move sharp and polished. When she introduced herself, she used "Yvette Keane."I stayed tucked in a corner, watching. She spent like crazy, winning item after item.Funny—she'd cried to Damien about barely affording her heart treatment. Now she was tossing money around like it meant nothing.Even weirder, anytime someone else wanted something she liked, she'd drop her paddle and let it go.But in the shadows, she

I played it normal and went back to my room, frowning as I dug through everything I remembered about Enya from college.I grabbed my phone and called the classmates who used to be close to her."Hey, long time. How've you been?"I kept it light, made some small talk, then slipped it in—"Random, but I was just thinking about Enya. How's she doing?"Most of them had nothing. Lost touch after she went abroad. No clue where she was now.My stomach dropped, lower and lower.I was about to give up when her old roommate spoke."I heard she married some rich guy overseas. Seven years older. They're really close. He knew about her heart condition and spent a ton on treatment. I don't have his number, but... I know he's the director of La Lumière."La Lumière. A pretty famous gallery.I hung up and searched it right away.Got lucky—I found his name and email.I clenched my jaw and went for it.[Hi, Mr. Laurent. I'm one of Enya's old college classmates. Damien showing up felt like a save, yanking me out of it.But the questions? They spread fast.A second ago, he'd been locked in with Enya—so how did he just pass out?Did she do something to him? Knock him out on purpose? And now he's awake?Nothing lined up. My thoughts knotted. A chill climbed from my feet to my scalp, the unease stacking higher.Weirdly, the anger helped. Like a sedative.I took a breath and acted like I was just a girl catching her cheating fiancé.I looked straight at Damien, my voice cold enough to ice over. "This is your 'only me'? You're a hell of an actor. If you're still stuck on Enya, why am I even here? We're done, Damien Huxley. From now on, I want nothing to do with either of you. Do whatever you want."Inside, I was screaming—'Good. Human or not, she's not my problem. If something's off with her, that's on Damien. He earned it.'I turned and walked. Fast. Long strides. I just needed out of that suffocating place. But Damien panicked."Sadi
