Chapter 1

I applied to a school in London and finished my visa paperwork. Now, there were only four days left before I left the Moretti estate for good.

"Mom, my admission letter came through. The apartment in London is confirmed, too. My flight leaves in four days." I placed the folder in front of Mom Grace while she was trimming roses in the greenhouse.

Her scissors stopped in midair. "That soon?"

"Yeah. The school wants me there early for enrollment."

She put down the scissors, took my hand, and lowered her voice. "And that boyfriend you mentioned before? Did you break up with him?"

My fingertips stiffened.

Uncle Vincent happened to walk in from the hallway. When he heard her question, his expression darkened. "What boyfriend? He never came to the estate to meet us. That means he never took our Elena seriously. Good riddance."

Before I could answer, the front door opened. Cold air swept in, and the guards at the entrance bowed at once.

"Boyfriend?" That voice was lazy and dangerous. Luca Moretti was pulling off black leather gloves, fresh from the docks, his suit jacket over one arm and a dark stain on his cuff. His eyes landed on me, carrying a scrutiny only I could understand.

My chest tightened, but I still stood and called him the way I had for five years. "Brother."

Luca watched me for a few seconds, then let out a low, unreadable laugh. He tossed his car keys to the butler and went upstairs.

At dinner, Mom Grace opened a bottle of vintage red and raised her glass, happiness plain on her face. "Tonight, we should celebrate. Elena is about to go to Lon..."

My heart lurched. I cut her off at once. "Mom, this wine tastes a little harsh. Maybe it wasn't decanted long enough?"

Mom Grace paused. "Really? I asked the butler to open it early."

I was already standing with the bottle in my hand. "I'll get another one."

The second the kitchen door closed, I lowered my voice. "Mom, please don't tell Luca about me leaving yet."

Mom Grace looked surprised. "Why? He's always cared about you the most. If you're leaving, he should know."

"I'm afraid he'll worry. I'm also afraid he won't agree. I'll tell him after I get to London."

"All right. I'll keep it from him. But when you get there, message me every day."

I barely ate that night. After returning to my room, I dragged my suitcase out from the back of the walk-in closet and hid my important documents, bank cards, and admission papers in the lining.

At midnight, just as the antique clock finished striking twelve, the balcony door opened from the outside. I wasn't asleep, but I kept my eyes closed and pretended not to know.

The mattress dipped. The familiar scent of cedar and smoke came closer, and the next second, Luca wrapped an arm around me from behind. His warm breath brushed my ear. "Who was that boyfriend they mentioned today?"

I opened my eyes. My body tightened on instinct.

He lowered his head and kissed the side of my neck, amusement in his voice. "Your family wants to introduce you to someone, so now you're hiding from me? Elena, haven't I told you? You're mine. Only mine."

In the past, that would have softened me. Now, I only felt cold.

I pushed his hand away. "Luca, stop. I don't feel well."

He froze. His eyes darkened. "What did you call me?"

In private, I never called him Luca. I called him brother, or when he pressed me too hard, I blushed and said his name the way he liked.

I avoided his gaze. "It's my period."

He stared at me, as if trying to decide whether I was lying. At last, he pulled me back into his arms, his voice a little softer. "Fine. I won't touch you tonight. Sleep."

He said it as if that was the greatest mercy in the world.

I lay in his arms and listened as his breathing slowly evened out, but I couldn't sleep at all.

At twelve, I came to the estate. At fourteen, I called him brother. At eighteen, he found my diary and kissed me for the first time. After twenty, we were harmless siblings by day and a stolen dream by night.

Now, the dream had to end.

I picked up my phone and looked at the countdown.

[Four days.]

Slowly, I moved his hand away from my waist. A moment later, he reached for me again in his sleep. I pushed him away again. After several rounds, I took a pillow from the edge of the bed and placed it between us.

This time, Luca didn't come closer.

I kept my eyes open in the dark, one thought clear in my mind.

Soon, I would no longer be his secret. I would no longer be his possession, and I would no longer be the tool he used to hurt anyone.

Two years later, I graduated from the University of London. That day, London was sunny for once. The lawn was full of graduates, and sunlight warmed the old stone walls.Mom Grace had flown in from Chicago. She stood in the crowd holding a bouquet of white roses, waiting for me.The moment I saw her, I ran into her arms. She laughed and patted my back, eyes red. "Our Elena finally graduated.""Mom, don't cry.""I'm not crying." She immediately denied it, then lowered her head and wiped the corner of her eye. "It's just windy."Caspar stood nearby with a camera. After two years of training, his photos were still hit or miss, but at least he no longer shoved people to the edge of the frame.I held Mom Grace's hand and stood on the steps, flashing a peace sign at the camera. When the shutter clicked, the ring on my finger caught the sunlight.Mom Grace noticed at once, and her smile was impossible to hide. "Caspar has good taste."I looked down at the ring. There was no huge diamond or fa

For the first time, Luca lost control in front of everyone. He smashed everything in the study that could be smashed, ordered airports, docks, and private airstrips locked down, and sent people to London to find where Elena was staying. But every lead sank like a stone in the sea.Her flight trail disappeared after landing, her apartment couldn't be traced, and the school system showed only basic status. The Ross security network sealed her off like a wall. When Sophia heard what happened, she came to the estate herself. She stood at the door of the ruined study, unwillingness sharp in her voice. "Luca, have you lost your mind? Isn't it good that she's gone? Didn't you always say that if she hurt, Grace would hurt?"Luca raised his eyes. That single look was so cold it made Sophia's back go numb. "Get out.""Luca...""I said, get out."Luca didn't look at her again. He tucked Elena's letter against his chest like it was the last thread about to snap. Then he began replaying every detai

At five in the morning, Luca woke by habit. The first thing he did was reach for the space beside him.Still empty. She hadn't come back all night.Luca's heart dropped hard. He returned to his room and was about to call someone to check Elena's location when his hand brushed two items under his pillow.A letter and a bank card. His movements stopped. In the past, when Elena wanted to cheer him up, she hid little gifts under his pillow: handwritten cards, cuff links, an out-of-print poetry collection, even a candy sealed in a glass bottle. It was their childish little ritual.Luca stared at the letter, and the gloom that had haunted him all night suddenly softened. She remembered his birthday. She was just being stubborn. He didn't open the letter. He only took the bank card to the study and asked his secretary to check the balance.Half an hour later, the secretary reported carefully, "Sir, there are three million dollars on the card."Luca's hand paused around his coffee. "Three mill

The flight to London took off on time. When the plane climbed through the clouds, I gripped the armrest with sweaty palms. Only after Chicago's city lights disappeared under mist did I slowly let go.I really left. Away from the estate, away from Luca, and away from the Elena who kept trapping herself between love and lies. When I landed at Heathrow, a light rain was falling over London.I pushed three suitcases out of arrivals and immediately saw a sign with my name on it.A gentle-looking woman held the sign. Her husband stood beside her, and on her other side was a tall young man in a black coat. His features were clean and sharp, but his eyes carried none of Luca's aggression. The woman spotted me and waved at once. "Elena! Over here!"She was Margaret Ross, Mom Grace's childhood friend, who now ran a London security company with her husband.I pushed my suitcases toward them. The crowd was packed, and one of my bags got knocked away. Before I could chase it, the young man stepped

I looked up at him and suddenly felt as if the man in front of me was a stranger.I used to think I understood Luca, his rare tenderness, his old wounds, his hatred of Mom Grace's kindness. Now I realized I only understood the parts he wanted me to see.I put the phone back on the nightstand. My voice was hoarse from the fever. "Is there something I shouldn't see?"Luca came over, scanned the screen, and tightened his grip on the glass until water sloshed over his hand. But he recovered fast, sat on the bed, and pulled me into his arms. "Just a few bastards running their mouths. You're still sick. Don't overthink it.""The engagement was a joke, too?"Luca kissed the top of my head, his voice so gentle it was nearly a lie. "Elena, I wanted to surprise you. Denmark and Malta both allow step-siblings with no blood relation to register a marriage. I've already asked the lawyers to prepare the documents. Once the family stabilizes, we'll leave Chicago and go somewhere nobody knows us."I h

  • The Girl He Used for Revenge   Chapter 3

I walked nearly forty minutes in the rain before I reached the visa center. My hair was soaked, my skirt clung to my legs, and my documents were nearly ruined. A staff member handed me hot water and asked if I needed to rest.I shook my head and handed over the documents one by one.Stamp. Confirm. Sign. When the last form was taken away, I stared at the small blue stamp and felt my heart go strangely quiet. Now, only one ticket stood between me and the Moretti estate. The rain still hadn't stopped outside. I couldn't get a cab, so I had to walk back along the street. Rain dripped from my hair into my collar, cold enough to make my teeth chatter.By the time I returned to the estate, it was already dark.I didn't go to the dining room or alert anyone. I simply went back to my room and changed out of my wet clothes. But even a hot shower couldn't drive away the chill, and soon I started to burn with fever. When my mind was at its blurriest, I dreamed too many things. I dreamed of the cr
