Day 13 of The Games KELLEN Today was my day to fight. I had woken just before sunrise, watching the peak of the sun come up over the horizon. Its orange glow of the breaking dawn reminded me of the hot flames of a fire, distorting the air around it as the heat rose with a golden orb, creating a mirage. I walked out into the open common area where it was still deadly silent. I had noticed in my first few days the lack of vegetation and animals. Not a single bird called out in the morning and not a single cricket chirped when night fell. KELLEN The opposing contenders began yelling something in a foreign language at each other. However, I didn’t need to understand their words. Their dark and malevolent eyes said it all, and the vicious and barbarous smirks they each wore told me they were going to go for the kill. “This is it,” I heard Ajani say and I turned my head to look at him. Without the need for words, we turned our backs on each other taking a fighting stance, weapons in hand at the ready. Day 14 of The Gladiator Games KELLEN The atmosphere amongst the Gladiators in the barracks was somber, to say the least. Not that any of us were ever really charismatic being enslaved. Ajani’s death had hit our hearts and the reality of our situation was once again shoved in our faces. We had lost Gladiators previously and we all acknowledged each of their deaths. KELLEN The creatures stalked towards me and I cast my eyes to the sky, sending out a prayer that I hoped would reach the ears of the gods and they would favor me. In the distance, I saw a mass of darkness, a shelf cloud that was rolling in from the north and heading our way. My shallow breaths halted as I registered the ominous doomsday storm approaching. The screech of the creatures brought me tumbling back to the now and, again, for the umpteenth time I raised my sword and planted my feet, readying for the attack. My mind went a mile a minute as I tried to gauge the movements of the monstrosities I faced. The first one leaped in the air, snapping its jaws as his body flung itself in my direction.
