Rafael’s POV

The sirens were already screaming from three different directions and the sound was bouncing off the tall glass buildings of the financial district as I stood in the middle of the bank lobby, and I could feel the cold sweat running down my back while I watched the red and blue lights flashing against the heavy marble pillars.

I had my hand on the trigger for the building’s fire suppression system because I knew that as soon as the police breached the front doors we were all going

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 103

Matteo's POV The cold water of the creek was splashing straight into my boots as our trucks hit the muddy bank, but my eyes weren't on the road ahead because the morning light had finally cleared the fog on the upper ridge and showed a silver armored SUV parked right next to the old stone watchtower. Don Salvatore himself was standing right beside the open door with a radio in his hand while he pointed his cane down at our stalled caravan, and the sight of that man directing the shooters who had destroyed our whole neighborhood made the blood rush into my ears so loud that I didn't even hear Alessia screaming at me to keep my head inside the truck cabin. "Matteo, get back into the rear seat right now because the southern shooters are already setting up their rifle lines on the lower terrace and you can't run up that rocky slope with your leg in that condition!" Lucien yelled as he reached over from the driver's side to grab the strap of my vest, but I had already clicked the door

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 102

Alessia's POV The steering wheel of the pickup was scorching hot as another beam crashed down onto the hood, and the thick smoke from the burning oil vats was filling the entire loading bay so fast that I couldn't even see the front bumper of Lucien’s van through the windshield. The new headlights coming through the back orchard meant Rossi was sending his secondary line to seal our rear flank before Paolo could even clear the wrecked flatbed from the main driveway, and our boys were down to their last two boxes of rifle cartridges while the southern shooters were already advancing across the irrigation ditch with fresh magazines."The rear exit is completely choked with burning timber and we can't back the trucks out through the cistern path because they just dropped an iron barricade across the lower creek lane," Lucien shouted as he dragged a bleeding soldier toward our cabin door and kicked the empty brass casings out of his path."Take the rest of the boys and move them into the

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 101

Lucien's POV The yellow light of dawn had barely touched the tops of the orange groves when the first heavy round punched a clean hole through our reinforced iron door, and the sound of fifty automatic rifles opening fire at the same time from the irrigation ditch turned the quiet morning into a solid wall of noise that rattled the tin roof over our heads. I threw myself behind a stack of thick timber beams that Paolo had jammed against the front window frame, and the plaster dust was flying so thick that I couldn't even see the edge of the driveway where Rossi’s lead vanguard vehicles were parked across our main exit line."Paolo, don't waste your cartridges on the armored cabins because you need to aim low and hit the shooters who are trying to crawl through the drainage pipes on the left side of the lane!" I screamed over the roar of the gunfire while I cycled the action of my shotgun and sent two heavy slugs into the weeds where a muzzle flash was blinking."They brought two seco

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 100

Matteo's POV The radio on the wooden crate was buzzing with a constant stream of local police reports and scout chatter, and we were back inside the abandoned olive press while the morning light started to leak through the holes in the tin roof and show the gray dust settling over our three armored trucks. Paolo was busy cleaning the carbon from his shotgun barrel while Lucien sat on a cement sack with a thick white bandage wrapped around his neck where Bruno had tried to choke the life out of him on the villa terrace, and the mood inside the stone walls was incredibly tense because we knew our victory at the ancestral house had just triggered the final alarm in the capital."The scouts near the northern highway bend just confirmed that Don Salvatore has completely pulled his core circle out of the Rome sectors, and he has packed forty trucks full of his best Sicilian shooters to race down the coast road at ninety miles an hour," Paolo said as he jammed a fresh spring into his magazi

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 99

Lucien's POV The heat from the burning library was pressing hard against my back as I tried to clear the side terrace, but before I could reach the marble steps that led down to Alessia’s idling pickup truck a massive shadow rose from the smoke near the conservatory doors and a heavy boot kicked my shotgun right out of my hands. It was Bruno, the giant enforcer who had broken my ribs back at the Rome docks three months ago, and he had obviously skipped the capital convoy to guard the family cash vaults because he was staring at me with a face covered in black soot and blood from the recent library blast."I told the Don you would eventually try to sneak down here like a stray dog after your brick yard fell apart, Valenti, but you aren't leaving this terrace tonight because I am going to break your neck with my bare hands right here on your father's old hunting ground," he growled as he dropped his empty submachine gun onto the tiles and stepped forward with his massive fists raised.

  • The Glass Rose    Chapter 98

Alessia's POV The heavy iron gates of the Rossi villa didn't even hold for five seconds against the welded steel nose of our lead pickup truck, and the metal bars snapped with a loud crunch that echoed through the dark orange groves as Lucien accelerated across the manicured lawns toward the wide marble steps of the main entrance. The ancestral house was massive and lit up like a fortress under the southern moon but the lack of guards on the perimeter proved my theory was right, and Don Salvatore had left nothing but a skeleton crew of old watchmen and cousins to hold his backyard while he spent his days hunting for our ghost cells back in the capital."Paolo, take three boys and secure the rear staff quarters before they can pull the main breaker switches for the lawn lights, and Lucien you stay right behind me with the sledgehammer because the central safeboxes are located in the cellar office behind the library walls," I shouted as I jumped down from the running board and fired a
