Chapter 10

Syria’s POV

I stood myself up despite the fact that all the muscles in my body were crying out in agony.

I staggered out of the cemetery gate, convinced that I had escaped at last. But the minute I reached the outside, my heart sank.

They were waiting for me.

A black car was stopped directly in front of me. It was Novene’s car. The window rolled down just a fraction, and I heard her icy, commanding voice.

I thought they left already…

"Make sure she doesn't try to escape again," she commanded. Then she glanced at me. "Try running away, and you'll be dead to us."

"Yes, Lady Novene," one of the guards answered.

They took off without another word. The remaining guards stayed, making a tight circle around me.

I gritted my teeth. I wanted to fight. But what would it accomplish now?

One day, I vowed to myself. But for now, I'll just let them have their way. I'll just let them believe they've succeeded.

But I'll never forget this day.
