LOGINFive years ago, my junior made a mistake in the experiment, resulting in an explosion in the lab. In an effort to save my childhood friend, Andrew, I suffered severe burns to one side of my face and was falsely accused as the culprit. Just like that, I became the target of everyone's anger. Only Andrew stood by me, promising, "I love you for who you are, not your appearance. I'll always be there to protect you." But on our wedding day, he vanished without a trace. My mother, suffering from heart disease and barely clinging to life, wanted to see Andrew. When I asked him to come, he replied impatiently, "Are you using such a lame excuse to meet me? Don't you have any shame? Every time I look at your face, I feel disgusting." I pleaded desperately, but he calmly hung up. "Do you think I'm your servant? You can't just summon me whenever you want. Just because you saved me once doesn't mean you can blackmail me for life." My mother died without peace. The junior who slandered me back then later posted a photo on social media, showing a man lifting her effortlessly. Their poses were intimate, highlighting the underlying affection. Her captions read: [It's all his fault for tiring me out during the day. I almost missed out on this beautiful ocean. When you're in love, all is clear to see. I mentioned wanting to go to Belmar Island, and he flew me around the world for it.] I was utterly heartbroken, so I texted him: [Let's break up…]

Lylah gazed intently at the two figures standing in the centre of the pack as they exchanged their marriage vows. Akira and Zarek looked so happy and so much in love. Soon she would be required to say the vows as well and bond forever with Cormac, but the thought of that made her sad rather than happy.
“Why so glum, Lylah?” Kaida asked, rousing her from her thoughts.
Lylah turned to her friend, seated beside her on the low bench. Kaida’s eyes were twinkling under the full moon, and the colour of her flushed cheeks almost matched the redness of her hair.
“She’s imagining how her own wedding day will be.” Odessa chimed in from Lylah’s other side.
Lylah's voice turned pensive. "You tend to assume too much, Odessa. It would interest you to know that unlike you, I don't engage myself in petty imaginations all day."
Odessa didn't appear ruffled by Lylah's remarks, instead, she pressed on. “Well, whether you're actually imagining it or not, one thing is certain: your own wedding is coming up soon, and it'll definitely be more grand than this. After all, you’re marrying Cormac of all persons!”
"I can't wait!" Kaida exclaimed.
Lylah shot them a reproachful glance, then her thoughts drifted to Cormac. Her expression faltered.
“What makes Cormac so special?” She asked, her brows furrowing. “Is it simply because he’s Alpha Asher’s son - someone I barely know or love?”
"Love will grow in time." Odessa said matter-of-factly.
Lylah eyed her disapprovingly. "You watch too much movies. "
Odessa and Kaida laughed.
“But seriously,” Kaida began, “you must be a little excited about it?”
Lylah's tone remained resolute“As a matter of fact, I’m not.”
“Gosh, girl! You’re unbelievable! Many girls would give their right paws to be chosen as the new Luna, yet you’re acting like it’s a problem.”
Lylah didn’t reply. She looked away and fixed her gaze once more on the new couple in the center of the pack. The flaming bonfire behind the them cast a glow on her oval shaped face, and the tip of her nose flared outward as her velvet, ruby red lips curved into a gentle smile.
“Akira and Zarek have been close since we were all pups.” She began. “They chose each other. It seems not everyone gets to be that lucky.”
“So what you’re saying...” Kaida began, “Is that if you were given the chance to pick your mate, you’d have chosen someone else? Someone other than Cormac?”
“Of course I would!” Lylah replied, her facial muscles tightening.
“Who would you have chosen then?” Odessa asked, her voiced laced with obvious doubts.
Lylah looked squarely at her. Her face was undecided for a moment, but then she turned away without saying a word.
“You see...” Odessa continued, triumphantly. “You don’t actually have anyone in mind, you’re just being difficult.”
“I’m not being difficult...”
“Yes, you are.” Odessa countered.
Lylah's voice took on a hint of mischief. “Actually I do have someone in mind... but he's not from here.”
“Oh, that's very funny.” Odessa scoffed.
“No, I’m serious.” Lylah persisted, an enigmatic grin spreading across her face.
“Which clan is he from, then?” Odessa asked.
“I’m not telling you.” Lylah said, pursing her lips.
Odessa rolled her eyes. "And here I am, actually believing that you don't wallow in imaginations 'like me.'"
Before Lylah could retort, Kaida, who had been focusing on the event in front of them, nudged her and gestured forward, her hands twitching excitedly. “Look! This is my best part - they’re about to turn!”
The three girls focused once more on the couple as they received their marriage blessings from the three representatives of the Lunar Council. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone cheering as the pair prepared for their first duo transformation as bonded mates.
Just then, Lylah felt a tug on her right hand. She turned to see Cormac beckoning her.
“Come, Lylah, I want to talk to you,” he said, his deep voice cut through the cheering that enveloped them all around.
“Can it wait, please? I want to watch this.” Lylah replied impatiently.
“Now, Lylah!” Cormac commanded, the glow of the fire conveying his hardened gaze and the corners of his mouth which twisted downwards, as if daring Lylah to defy him.
“But I don’t want to miss this turning part...” She said softly, almost like a plea.
But Cormac had already turned and was walking away towards the Oakwood tree that stood swaying majestically in the wind some kilometers ahead.
Lylah stood up dejectedly and started towards him. Her friends eyed her approvingly as she left, but Lylah wished she was in their shoes instead. At least they would have the opportunity to choose who they are paired with, someone they actually loved, not someone that would just show up and order them around.
What could Cormac possibly want with her at this very moment? And is this how their relationship will be, he ordering her about irrespective of what she thinks or how she feels?
Lylah sighed and picked up her pace. The sooner she finds out what Cormac wants, the better, that way she can at least begin to learn about what her future with him would look like.
"Andrew? What are you saying? You think I'm vile?" Emma's voice rose in indignant fury.Andrew rose to his feet, his stance composed as he faced her. "Aren't you vile? The explosion, the deceit, the fear that Jessica would reveal the truth... You wanted me to be her savior, to feign love to silence her."You've ruined her life. Her father died from a stroke, her family was uprooted, and her mother's heart broke."With each accusation, Emma trembled."Emma, don't you see how vile you are?"Emma was cornered by guilt, her eyes darted around. Her bravado was gone. "You're lying... Andrew, you're lying!"Her voice became strained as she shook her head in dismay. "Andrew, how could you do this to me?!"Guys, don't listen to him. Andrew and Jessica must be in on this together to mess with me!"Emma scanned the room, desperate for someone to take her side.I waved my phone, the screen showing the video. "Talking about me, Emma?"Her eyes were fiery red as she lunged at me, spitting
I ripped everything Andrew left behind in two and tossed it all in the trash. Time was not the only thing I had wasted during our time together. He had been camping out under my window for days, like he was on some kind of stakeout. Every time he saw me, he would start to say something, then just clam up.However, when I pulled out the gloves he gave me, his eyes sparkled to life. Too bad for him, I tossed them into the bin without a second thought.Andrew's voice spiked. "Don't!"Tears streamed down his face, and I had never seen a guy fall apart like that. He scrambled into the trash like he had lost his mind.I knew what those gloves meant. They were our memories—a cheap pair that cost ten bucks but which I had kept for three years. They were shabby and let the cold in, but they meant something. Back when the whole university turned against me, Andrew stood by me, holding my hand firmly in support. Because of that, he ended up being misunderstood along with me."Jessica, I t
Andrew would not let go.He seemed dead set on cutting Emma out for good.Day after day, Emma's nasty texts kept coming.[Jessica, you think you're still good enough for Andrew with that face?[I don't care what spell you've cast on Andrew, he's mine![Here's a friendly tip: stay away from Andrew. Haven't you learned anything from the past?]Even Andrew's parents joined the guilt-tripping parade."Jessica, you're a sweet girl, but let's be real, with your scars, snagging someone like Andrew is your last shot at a decent life... "Mrs. Snyder tried to sound caring, but her words were dripping with disdain."Jessica, let's be real—who would actually fall for someone like you? Only our dear Andrew—bless his rich, naive heart—is willing to put up with you. It's just a wedding, right? We can always do it over."I had always known that they did not think much of me, but I was willing to put up with them for Andrew. No matter how cutting or cruel their words were, I could take it. H
I stopped, holding Andrew's gaze."I wouldn't save you. Not in a million years."Andrew's voice was a rasp. "Jessica..."I looked away."Andrew, you're just... the worst."Andrew's shoulders slumped, defeated....After I got out of the hospital, I went home and changed the locks.I used to think Andrew was end game, so I gave him my keys, letting him waltz in and out like it was nothing. That had been a big mistake. It turned out he was the very person who bit me in the back. I straightened up Mom's photo again and dug into some pierogi in front of it. The ones Mom used to make were long gone. These were my own newbie attempts. The dough was too thick, and they just fell apart in the pot. They were nothing like Mom's. Hers were delicate and stuffed full, and I could scarf down two heaping plates with no problem. The more I munched, the more I felt like bawling. I mumbled to her photo, "Mom, you never got to try my pierogi. They're not as yummy as yours. Mom, I'm craving y
"No way! How could..."Andrew's eyes shook, slowly turning to me."That can't be right. Her mom was so strong. How could she just be gone?!"The nurse on the phone was at a loss for words. "The lady had a heart condition and couldn't handle stress. We sent out the death notice the day before yesterday,
Andrew and Emma sprang apart like they had been caught. Andrew scrambled to fix her clothes, all flustered. "Why are you back? I was just helping her out, putting some cream on a scrape she got on her back."My voice came out all scratchy. "Is that all you were doing?"Maybe he had grown accustome
Mom's funeral was kept simple. However, a bunch of Andrew's relatives were still hanging around. As I was walking by, I overheard them whispering."Did you see the woman's face? All that makeup can't hide how sickening it is.""I heard she's got a nasty rep. She caused an explosion back in univer
After Mom's cremation, I shut myself in my room and wept for a whole day and night.Just two days ago, she was laughing, baking me a cake, and then all that was left of her was a pile of dust. I cried until I passed out. In a matter of days, death had torn us apart.Emma Rogers, the woman who used
