Chapter 1 The Money They Always Needed

Author: Gardenia Crease
The next second, my phone rang. It was my mother.

As soon as I answered, she asked, "Abigail, did your scholarship come through?"

She had no idea I was only a short distance away.

I leaned against a pillar, my right hand hanging at my side. "It did."

"How much?"

"$120,000."

"Perfect. Transfer $100,000 to me first."

She paused before adding, "Your sister got hurt. Your dad and I can only come up with $200,000, and we have to pay the surgical deposit tomorrow."

Another pause.

"Keep the remaining $20,000 for living expenses. I know college isn't easy for you, so I'm not asking you to give me all of it."

So, she was leaving me $20,000. Was I supposed to be grateful?

Five years ago, she had done the same thing.

My grandfather needed money for dialysis. My surgery could wait. We had to set aside some of the household food supplies. Whatever was left could go to me.

After that, there was never anything left for me.

"Mom, I need surgery too."

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds.

"What kind of surgery?"

"A procedure to correct my right hand. The doctor said they'd have to break the bones again and reset them in two stages."

"What? Why are you suddenly thinking about getting your hand treated?"

I did not answer.

My hand hurt every day, but to her, as long as I did not complain, I was as good as healed.

"Mom, I'm at the orthopedic hospital right now."

"Don't pay anything yet," she answered immediately. "Your hand has been like that for five years. Waiting a few more months won't hurt. Lillian is only five. We can't let her be left with a permanent injury."

"I was only thirteen five years ago."

There was silence on the line.

My father took the phone. "Abigail, help us get through this emergency. Once things settle down at home, I'll get your hand treated."

"You said that five years ago too."

No one said anything.

Lillian Rothwell suddenly leaned toward the phone. "Abigail, does it hurt for you too?"

"Yes."

"Then, what will you do after you give me the money?"

I really did love her.

For five years, we had never met, but whenever my parents called, Lillian would grab the phone and sweetly call me Abigail.

When she had a fever and could not sleep, I would tell her stories over the phone all night.

The picture books she loved were ones I had saved up for and mailed to her out of my living expenses.

My mother immediately took the phone back. "Abigail, we have emergency money set aside at home. We can't just use it. Transfer the $100,000 first."

"So, the family's money can't be touched, but my scholarship money can?"

"Do you really have to be so calculating with your own family?"

I hung up.

The staff member at the information desk handed me an assessment form. I filled it out with my left hand, but the brace got in the way, so writing was slow and awkward.

She moved the brace to my left side. "This should make it a little easier."

A stranger only had to look at me once to realize I was struggling. My parents hadn't asked once in five years.

I found my grandfather's number and stared at it for a long time, but in the end, I did not call. He was already so sick. I did not want to give him anything else to worry about.

The payment window called my number. My father was only a short distance away, and I was about to enter my PIN. In the reflection of the glass, I saw him running toward me, furious.

I did not hesitate.

The payment was successful. The $600 assessment fee was deducted from my scholarship account.

This time, my parents did not bring Lillian.Caroline handed me a new backpack. "You always loved pink when you were little. I bought you the most expensive one. Consider it a belated college gift.""I don't like pink.""You used to.""That was then."She set the backpack on the table. "Abigail, I know I was wrong. That paper saying we're no longer family doesn't count. Blood ties can't be severed by a piece of paper.""I know."She took that as a sign I had given in. "That's more like it. Family doesn't stay mad at each other forever. Pack your things. We'll come get you this weekend and take you home. We won't bring up the past again.""It doesn't matter whether the paper counts or not. I don't need it to have any legal effect."Nathaniel frowned. "Then, what are you still making a fuss about? We came to you, didn't we?""I haven't made a fuss about anything.""You won't answer our calls, you won't come home, you won't even take care of your sister, and you still say you h

I still could not help myself. I had to ask."Do you know when my last follow-up appointment was?"My mother had no answer."There's no point dwelling on the past. The fact that you're recovering now is the best outcome we could've hoped for."Nathaniel continued, laying out their plans. "After you graduate, stay here in the city. We asked around. With your major, finding a job shouldn't be difficult. You can stay at home and use your room, so you won't have to pay rent.""What are the conditions?""Why do you have to treat your parents like we're making a deal?""Then, there are no conditions?"He was silent for a moment."Lillian will need long-term rehabilitation. If you stay in the city, you can help with her rides now and then. We're getting older. We can't handle everything ourselves."There it was.Caroline quickly tried to soften it. "We're not asking you to take care of her every day. You can use both hands now. That's something you didn't have before. If Lillian ha

"Abigail, I didn't cry today." Lillian called me on her kids' phone. "My therapist told me to lift my foot, so I did it thirty times. Mom gave me a doll as a reward.""Good job.""Abigail, did you practice today?""I did.""Did you get a reward?""Being able to move it is reward enough."She did not understand, but she did not ask any more questions.I did not block her number. She had not been involved in our parents' decision, and she had never tried to take anything from me.But two weeks later, she started passing along messages from our parents."Abigail, Mom wants to know when you're coming home.""I'm not.""Mom said they bought you a bed.""Didn't I have one before?""No. I have too many toys, so the other room is full. Dad said if they clear out half of them, you can stay there."They were finally willing to make room for a bed for me at home. The condition was that they had to clear out things my sister no longer wanted."Lillian, don't ask me things for them."

"I bought you some things to help you recover. Come out and get them."Caroline started coming to campus more and more often. The first time, she brought me a box of herbal tonics. The second time, she brought walnuts. The third time, she brought me a whole box of unshelled nuts.None of it had been recommended by my doctor. But every time, she took photos and sent them to our relatives, proving she had not neglected her daughter.I had the security guard send everything back. She cornered me outside the academic building. "Abigail, I've already swallowed my pride and come to you. What more do you want?""I didn't ask you to come.""Your grandfather was most worried about you before he died. I'm only looking out for you for his sake.""He told me to keep up with my follow-up appointments. He never told you to use his name as an excuse to come after me.""How can you think so badly of me? Is bringing you food wrong now?"Nathaniel finally got to the real reason they were th

"Abigail, don't help me. Take care of your hand first."When my grandfather's condition suddenly worsened, I went back home with my arm in its brace. He did not ask how much I had spent. He did not ask how much of my scholarship I had left."Does it still hurt?""Yes.""If it hurts, say so. Don't pretend you're fine."It was the first time I had admitted I was in pain in front of my family without worrying that I would be told to just tough it out."Grandpa, the surgery went well.""That's good. When's your follow-up?""Next week.""Don't put it off just to stay with me.""I want to stay a few more days.""What is there to stay for? Taking care of your own life is more important than sitting here with me."…That afternoon, my parents brought Lillian home. The moment Caroline walked through the door, she asked, "Dad, what did Abigail say to you after she got back? She's young and acts on impulse. You need to talk to her and tell her not to let her anger with the family g

When I opened my eyes, my first thought was still of my parents."Abigail, wake up. Your surgery is over."Josephine and my counselor, Charles, were waiting beside me.Josephine told me what the doctor had said. "The first stage of the surgery went well. Now, we just have to see how the bone heals. The doctor said you can have a little water now that you're awake.""Where are my parents?" I regretted asking the moment the words left my mouth.Josephine didn't lie to me. "Lillian was admitted today. They went over there."I closed my eyes. At least the anesthesia hadn't completely worn off. The pain wasn't too bad this time.Charles arranged the things I'd need during my hospital stay. "The school has already applied for temporary hardship assistance for you. You earned your scholarship with your grades. It doesn't belong to anyone else, and you don't have to explain to the school how you spend it.""Thank you.""Don't thank me. Just focus on getting better."An hour later, my
