As soon as he stopped moving, I gave up hope.

 The world shook.  The sounds of war turned into an empty hum that made me feel like the whole world was holding its breath.  Elias was lying on the ground still, his hand still on the edge of my torn sleeve, as if he didn't trust me to stay put.  His lips were white.  His eyes are only half open.  He looked like he was just sleeping, but I knew.  I knew he was gone deep down.

 "No," I said in a whisper, shaking my head. The word was hard for me to say.  "No, no, no."
