I’ve seen Aria angry before.

I’ve seen her rage in battle, seen her stand with blood on her hands and fire in her eyes, seen her stare down men who made kings tremble.

But this—this wasn’t anger.

This was something else.

Panic. Desperation. Grief that hadn’t had time to surface yet.

She shook with it. Her voice was hoarse from screaming. And the look in her eyes. Like she was watching the world fall apart in slow motion and couldn’t do a damn thing to stop it. I didn't like it.

“Aria,” I said, reaching for her arm. “We’ll find them. We will.”

She yanked away like my touch burned.

“No. Don’t—don’t try to calm me down, Ronan. They’re gone. My babies are gone.”

Her voice cracked on the last word, and it felt like.

I wanted to tell her it wasn’t her fault. But I knew she wouldn’t believe me. Hell, I wasn’t even sure I believed myself. She trusted Ansel. But I hadn't stood firmly enough against it. At least not enough to not leave the twins in her care.
