I woke up feeling hollow.

The dream felt like it was hanging on the edge of my mind, impossible to grasp. The man… and the orchards from my childhood. His voice echoing in my head was the only thing that I truly remembered about him.

“I’ve been waiting for you… for a thousand years.”

The burning sensation in my chest wouldn’t leave me.

A knock at my door pulled me from my thoughts.

“Come in,” I said, sitting up.

Ansel entered, balancing a tray of food on her hand with a smile far too bright for the hour. “I figured you’d need this,” she said, placing the food on the table near my bed. “You didn’t get the chance to eat after you got back.”

The smell of the meal caught my attention. I hadn't had a proper meal in a while. “You didn’t have to, Ansel.”

“I wanted to,” she replied, dusting her hand on her skirt. “You’re always so busy and you looked out for me. You deserve to be taken for of too."

“Thank you.” I gave her a grateful smile.

The southern gates opened once the sentries sighted us We rode through and I got off my horse. Ronan was already there, his expression was closed off but I knew he was relieved to have me back. Before I could take another step, I saw Kael and Talia running for me at full speed. Ansel showed up behind them walking with a slight limp.“Mom!” Talia called out as she jumped into my arms.Kael wrapped himself around my waist with the same force, nearly knocking me off balance.“I missed you both so much,” I whispered, hugging them tight. “Are you okay? I hope you were good?”Kael nodded. “We just finished our training today. Uncle Ronan said we’ve gotten stronger.”“I believe it.” I kissed their foreheads and looked up at Ansel. “Thank you for watching them.”She smiled coyly. “They’re amazing. Really.”I noticed the limp again as she shifted her weight. “Are you hurt?”“Oh, no...It’s nothing.” She waved me off and blushed. “Just a small sprain during training. I asked Ronan to show me a

《》Ronan's PovShe'd left without looking back.My fists tightening around the stone slab as I watched her from the tower. She was going to him.Lucien.The name was a bitter on my tongue. I told myself it was because of what he did to her. But deep down, my feelings were also selfish. I hated that she still had room in her heart for him, even though she wouldn't admit it. And I hated more that it made me feel. Like I'd never be more than just the loyal sword at her side. Would she ever see me differently?I turned away from the view. There were other things that needed my attention. Like the cloaked figure she'd followed past the border before the celestial projection hit. A figure no one else had seen.I moved through the Citadel, every stride purposeful, until I found the captain of the watch. He stood to attention immediately, his left hand rising to his head in a salute."Give me the patrol logs from the night before last. And the gate records.""Yes, Commander."It didn’t take l

His features twisted slightly at the corners, but he didn’t scoff or dismiss me like I expected. He simply said, voice low, “You shouldn't have come here.”The wind blew dust between us. His shirt was damp with sweat, his chest still rising and falling from the training session I had interrupted him.“And yet here I am.” I replied nonchalantly. For once I'd be the one ruffling his feathers."If you're here to dig up the past, you can turn right back around.""I’m not the one that hasn't moved on," I said, voice even. "I’m here because you may not have a future if you keep ignoring what’s right in front of you."He laughed bitterly. “Is that what you’re selling now? Prophecies and riddles? You didn’t care about this pack. Don’t pretend now.”"I didn't care?," I said softly. "You watched selene humiliate me for years. You scarred my face and left me in a cell. Don’t twist this."His expression faltered for a fraction of a second before he looked away. “That was five years ago.”“And you

My fingers worked on the clasp of my cloak as I got ready. I hadn't wasted a second after leaving Ronan’s room. The sense of dread hadn't left completely but it had been replaced with an urgency I couldn't shake. As I walked past the kitchens, I caught the scent of rosemary and freshly baked bread. Then laughter—childish, care free—spilled through the open doors of the dining hall. I met Ansel sitting with the twins, trying to keep up with whatever games they were playing whilst feeding them their breakfast. She looked up as I entered, immediately noticing my attire and seriousness of my disposition. “You’re going somewhere?” she asked, wiping her hands as she stood. Her expression shifting from curiosity to concern. “Is everything alright?”I smiled. It was tight, didn’t quite reach my eyes. “I have some inportant business to take care of. It’s… nothing serious.”“Should I be worried?” she asked gently, lowering her voice to avoid drawing the awareness of the twins. Kael had alrea

The words lingered between us.I didn’t give him a response. Because I didn’t know the answer. Or maybe I did and I just wasn’t ready to say it out loud.“I’ll handle Lucien,” I said, putting it aside. “But right now, we need to figure out what we're going to do about Selene.”Ronan’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. “Tell me everything you saw.”I leaned back against the upholster, taking in a slow breath. “The cloaked figure I saw, I didn’t get a good look at him. But he was tall, moved quickly, and he stayed just out of reach.” I paused, my mind swirling over the details. “He was coming from the direction of the Citadel… and he couldn't have been one of the attending leaders, they usually have at least one escort." I let the words hang in the air."You think could he could be the traitor on the inside." I nodded. "And I'm sure it was someone that attended the meeting, maybe one of the elders? No doubt me enforcing my authority ruffled a lot of feathers. But the elders particularly h
