The glass shattered before Sophia could reach the hospital room, and Adrian's voice followed it through the half open door. She froze with the bouquet of white roses pressed against her chest as a nurse hurried past her, but Adrian was already shouting that he did not want another therapist, another doctor, or another promise that he would walk again. Sophia pushed through the doorway and found him gripping the edge of his wheelchair, his breathing hard and his knuckles white from the effort. A broken water glass glittered across the floor while the therapist stood several feet away, looking frustrated and defeated.

"Adrian, what happened?" Sophia asked, stepping carefully around the broken glass.

"Tell him to leave."

The therapist looked at Sophia before gathering his folder. "He refused the entire session."

Sophia glanced at Adrian, then back at the therapist. "Give us a moment, please."

The therapist nodded and walked out, closing the door behind him. Sophia waited until his footsteps faded down the corridor before turning back to Adrian, who had already positioned his wheelchair beside the window as though the argument had never happened. She placed the roses on the table and crouched to pick up the larger pieces of glass, keeping her movements careful as she gathered the scattered pieces into her palm.

"You could have hurt yourself," she said.

Adrian stared through the window. "I did not."

"You could have."

"I am still here, Sophia."

She straightened slowly and looked at him. "That is not the point."

"Then what is?"

"That you are giving up."

Adrian finally looked at her, and the tiredness in his eyes made Sophia's anger weaken. She had seen him frustrated, frightened and furious since the accident, but this was different because he looked as though he had already accepted a future she was not ready to imagine. She pulled a chair closer and sat opposite him, refusing to let the silence push her away.

"I am tired," Adrian said.

"You have been tired for months."

"I am tired of trying."

Sophia leaned forward and kept her voice steady. "Then tell me what you need."

Adrian gave a humorless smile. "You cannot give me what I need."

"Try me."

He looked down at his hands before answering. "I need my life back."

Sophia fell silent, because there was no easy answer to that. Adrian continued before she could respond, telling her that he was tired of waking up every morning and wondering whether he would need help with something as simple as getting out of bed, and he was even more tired of watching her pretend she was not exhausted. He said he could see the strain in her face whenever she thought he was not looking, and every time he noticed it, another piece of hope disappeared.

"You think I am going to leave you," Sophia said.

Adrian looked away. "I think you should."

"Why?"

"Because you deserve a life that does not revolve around hospitals."

Sophia's expression hardened. "I married you, Adrian."

"You married me before the accident."

"And I am still married to you now."

He turned toward her, his eyes suddenly sharp. "You do not understand."

"Then make me understand."

Adrian said nothing for several seconds. Outside the window, a family crossed the hospital courtyard, the father pushing a little boy on a bicycle while the mother walked beside them. The boy nearly lost his balance, and his father caught him before he could fall, making the child laugh as his mother shook her head.

Adrian watched them until they disappeared.

Sophia noticed the change in his face and understood before he spoke. "You wanted that."

His fingers tightened against the arms of his wheelchair.

"A family," he said quietly. "I wanted a family."

Sophia moved closer. "We can still have one."

Adrian looked at her with a sadness that made her heart ache. "Can we?"

"You do not know that we cannot."

"I know what my body can do."

"Your body is not your entire life."

"It is when you cannot even stand beside the woman you love."

Sophia reached for his hand, and after a moment of hesitation, Adrian allowed her to hold it. She could feel the tension in his fingers as he stared down at their hands, as though the sight of them together reminded him of everything he believed he had lost.

"I wanted to be a father," he admitted.

Sophia's throat tightened.

"I wanted to see you holding our baby. I wanted to complain about sleepless nights and broken toys, and I wanted to teach our son how to ride a bicycle or watch our daughter steal your shoes and run through the house." His voice became rougher as he continued, but he did not stop. "I wanted something that would make me feel like I still had a future."

Sophia squeezed his hand. "You do."

Adrian shook his head. "Not the future you wanted."

"I want you."

"You say that now."

"I will say it tomorrow too."

"And five years from now?"

Sophia stared at him, but Adrian pulled his hand away before she could answer. He turned back toward the window, leaving her with the terrible feeling that he had already decided what their future would be without asking her.

"I cannot give you the family you dreamed about," he said.

"You do not get to decide that alone."

"I am trying to give you a chance to want something else."

Sophia's eyes filled with tears. "You want me to leave you."

"I want you to live."

"I am living."

"Not if you spend your life feeling sorry for me."

She stepped back, hurt flashing across her face. "I have never felt sorry for you."

"I know."

"Then why are you pushing me away?"

Adrian looked at her, and the hardness in his expression finally cracked. "Because I love you."

Sophia could no longer hold back the tears. She turned toward the door, wiping her face before he could see how badly his words had affected her, but his voice stopped her just before she stepped into the corridor.

"Sophia, please do not waste your life waiting for me."

She stood there for a moment, then walked out without answering.

The corridor felt colder than it had when she arrived. Sophia pressed her back against the wall and took several slow breaths, trying to steady herself before anyone could see her crying, but Adrian's words kept replaying in her mind. She had gone into the room determined to make him fight, yet she had left realizing that his problem was deeper than his refusal to attend therapy because Adrian believed the accident had stolen his future. He believed he could never become a father, and worse, he believed Sophia would eventually hate him for taking that dream away.

She walked toward the elevator while wiping the last tear from her cheek, but just before she pressed the button, a name surfaced in her memory. Adrian had mentioned his brother only a handful of times, usually with a silence that suggested there was more to the story than Sophia had ever been told.

Damien.

Sophia's hand stopped above the elevator button as the name settled heavily in her mind. She knew almost nothing about Adrian's brother, except that he had been away from the family for years and that Adrian rarely spoke about him, but if Damien could somehow provide the possibility Adrian believed he had lost, then perhaps she could not afford to ignore him. The thought made her uncomfortable immediately because whatever solution involved Damien would come with a price, and Sophia was not yet ready to understand what that price might be.

The elevator doors opened, and Sophia stepped inside with her thoughts racing. She had entered the hospital believing Adrian needed her to make him fight, but she was leaving with something else entirely: a name she had never expected to matter.

Damien Vale.

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    THE SECRET HE COULD NOT EXPLAIN

Sophia noticed the envelope while clearing the breakfast table, its cream colored surface partly hidden beneath Adrian's medical papers. The name of a law firm was printed across the front, and the recent date caught her attention because Adrian had never mentioned contacting a lawyer. She reached toward it, but before her fingers touched the envelope, Adrian's voice came from behind her."Leave that alone."Sophia turned and found him watching her from the doorway, his expression unusually guarded."What is it?""Something personal.""You have never needed a lawyer for something personal."Adrian wheeled closer and took the envelope from her hand, sliding it beneath the other papers with deliberate care. Sophia watched him closely because his reaction was far too serious for something he claimed was unimportant, but she decided not to press him immediately."Not everything concerns you."The words landed harder than he intended, and his expression softened almost immediately. Sophia

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    THE HOPE HE PRETENDS TO HAVE

Sophia remained beside her car long after Damien ended the call, staring at the dark screen while his warning replayed in her mind. Someone inside the Vale family might have been involved in Adrian's accident, yet Damien had refused to explain why he was investigating it or what he intended to do with what he had discovered, leaving Sophia with more questions than answers. The folder Adrian had hidden from her was still inside her handbag, but she could not bring herself to open it because Adrian's words troubled her more than Damien's warning, especially the way he had told her she deserved another life as though he had already decided he would no longer be part of it.When Sophia finally entered the mansion, she found Adrian sitting near the window with an old photograph in his hands, and he quickly lowered it when he noticed her. She recognized the picture immediately because it showed the unfinished nursery in their old house, the same room they had once stood in while arguing pla

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    THE SECRET DAMIEN KEPT

Sophia was fastening her earrings when her phone vibrated on the dressing table, and Adrian's name appeared on the screen with a question about where she had been the previous afternoon. Before she could answer, another message arrived from an unknown number with a photograph attached, and the sight of her car parked outside Damien's estate made her fingers tighten around the phone. Beneath the photograph were six words that immediately erased the calm she had been trying to maintain: You should be careful who you visit.Sophia enlarged the photograph and checked the timestamp twice, wondering how long someone had been watching her without being noticed. She grabbed her handbag and left the room, deciding that whoever had sent the warning had already crossed a line, and Damien was the only person who might understand what was happening.Damien opened his door before she could knock twice, but the moment his eyes settled on the phone in her hand, his expression changed. He took it from

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Line They Should Not Cross

Sophia returned to the hospital the following morning with Damien's words still circling through her mind, but the moment Adrian saw her enter, he closed the file on his lap and watched her approach with an expression that told her he already knew where she had been. She placed her handbag beside the chair and stood before him, determined not to allow another conversation to end with half answers, while Adrian remained silent until the tension between them became impossible to ignore."You went to Damien," Adrian said."You knew I would.""I told you not to go.""You told me to stay away from him, Adrian, but you never told me why."Adrian looked toward the window, his fingers tightening around the edge of the file. "Because Damien is not someone you should involve yourself with."Sophia folded her arms. "He said you knew he would refuse before you sent me there."Adrian's jaw tightened, and that reaction gave her an answer before he spoke. "It does not matter.""It matters to me."He

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Man She Was Warned About

Sophia almost turned around when the black gates came into view because the address Adrian had given her led to an estate far more imposing than she had expected. A security guard approached her car, and after she gave him her name, he checked something on his tablet before opening the gate without asking another question. That small reaction unsettled her because it suggested Damien was expecting her, yet she had received no message from him and Adrian had never mentioned contacting his brother. Sophia drove through anyway, reminding herself that she had not come this far to retreat before getting the answer Adrian had refused to give her.She parked beneath the covered entrance and stepped out with her handbag in one hand. Before she could reach the front door, it opened, and a man walked outside with the calm confidence of someone who never needed to announce his authority. The resemblance to Adrian was unmistakable, but the similarities ended there because Damien carried himself w

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Name Behind the Door

Sophia turned the car around less than ten minutes after leaving the hospital. She had driven halfway home before Damien's name returned to her thoughts, and the more she tried to ignore it, the more impossible it became. Adrian's reaction had not been normal because he had not sounded annoyed or indifferent whenever Damien came up. He had sounded afraid, and that single detail refused to leave her mind. By the time she parked outside the hospital again, she had stopped asking herself whether she should investigate and started asking herself why Adrian was so desperate to stop her.The rehabilitation room was quieter than she expected. Adrian sat beside a treatment table while a therapist arranged equipment nearby, and both men looked up when she entered. Surprise crossed Adrian's face before he quickly buried it beneath his usual restraint, but Sophia noticed it anyway. She had spent years learning the smallest changes in his expressions, and she knew immediately that he had expected
