Nyx's Pov

It's been two weeks since the gala.

And two months since he took me from that bastard, Draven. I felt a chill anytime I wondered what would have happened to me if Caspian hadn't saved me. Because that's what I felt. He saved me from an even bigger monster.

Caspian and I have come to a momentary truce. We still sleep in the same room, there's sex and a few stolen kisses and touches.

Things I would never admit that I've come to look forward to. We always act like we hate each other and then, when we're alone, I can feel the tension ripple around us.

I feel things, things I shouldn't feel for him. Things I would never admit because I'm scared. I loved Zade too and look where that landed me. I chided myself, Caspian was nothing like Zade.

He had his moments where he was a complete asshole but aside from that, he took care of me. He spoiled me rotten. And his people, they were very welcoming of me. I felt like I belonged, like this was home. But I knew the truth.

I couldn't

Emma took her seat, next to him, because of course the universe had it out for her. Matthew didn’t look at her when she sat down, which was somehow worse. Like he was letting her stew in the fact that he’d gotten here first like some smug little strategy troll. She exhaled sharply through her nose and straightened her posture. Her notes were in front of her. Her brain was full of intelligent things. She was ready. This meeting was not about Matthew. She looked at Ross subtly and drew strength from his imposing figure.Mr. Desmond, the very old, very rich, and very fun investor for the G-Apex project, sitting at the head of the long glass table, clicked his pen once and leaned slightly forward. “We’ve reviewed your proposal and invested. There was clear foresight, and above all, the revision to the G Apex clause was clean.”Emma nodded slightly, trying to keep her expression neutral. Her stomach was clawing up into her throat. She could feel Ross’s gaze across the table, but she didn’

Emma typed like her fingers were on fire, she hadn’t written a full page out of the ten page correction for the clause Meredith asked her to look over and she only had an hour more till the meeting. She would have blamed herself but there was somebody much easier to blame. It was all Matthew’s fault. The man barged into her office again and sat down like he owned her seat. “I’m fine, thanks for asking”, he said. She didn’t even care about him but he was shedding all his self respect solely for the purpose of bugging and bothering her. She didn’t know Vanessa had told him, but she didn’t think she deserved this kind of torture no matter what it is she did, even if it was to Vanessa.“I didn’t ask”, she replied. He went silent for a while as Emma continued typing and Emma had foolishly hoped it was because he was sufficiently embarrassed, but judging by the way he was still in her office, he was not embarrassed at all. He just continued prattling on about things that sounded like wor

“Auntie,” Vanessa repeated with a flutter of her lashes, her tone slipping into the perfect point between gentle concern and barely disguised flattery. “I didn’t want to take too much of your time, but I… well, I had a few things I needed to discuss. Delicate things.”Eliana didn’t roll her eyes, but it was a battle. Her expression remained pleasant, though it was tight enough to cut glass.Vanessa pressed her knees together and leaned in just slightly, tilting her head like a sympathetic dove. “I know it’s not my place to talk about the matters of your family, but I hope you’ll forgive me for bringing up something that’s been weighing on me.”"Here we go", Eliana thought, folding her hands neatly on her lap. She had seen this kind of slow circling behavior too many times. Vanessa was a smart girl who had mastered the art of talking sideways.“Speak.”Vanessa lowered her eyes modestly. “It’s about Emma.”Eliana’s fingers twitched. Of course it was. She’d known the moment she saw Vane

CHAPTER TWENTYNYX'S POVThe ride to the orphanage was quiet but not uncomfortable. Caspian's fingers were laced with mine on the seat between us. I stared out the window, watching the world blur past, trees bending softly with the breeze. There was a calmness to the day, and even though my heart still carried weight, there was also a strange peace I couldn’t explain. When the driver slowed down and took a left turn, my attention snapped to the building ahead. My lips parted slightly. "Wow."The structure before me stood like something out of a fairytale. It was big, but not overwhelming. The walls were painted in soft cream with colorful murals of children, animals, rainbows, and stars. The gate itself had butterflies painted on it. The playground out front looked brand new, swings, slides, a small merry-go-round. Everything looked clean, fresh, and safe.“Who designed this?” I asked, still staring.Caspian smiled beside me. “I did.”I turned to him, blinking. “Seriously?”He nodded.

Monday came too quickly. Emma adjusted the hem of her cream blouse as she stepped out of the elevator and into the pristine, glittering halls of the Dale foundation. She had expected to slink into her office unnoticed with maybe a few polite nods from the associates on her floor, the usual half-hearted greetings and the lukewarm coffee that could never beat the coffee at the boardroom. But no. The second she crossed the threshold, it was like someone had announced her entrance on a loudspeaker.“Congratulations, Miss Emma!”“Way to go on G-Apex!”“Miss Emma, you’re a genius!”Emma blinked. The secretary to the head of her department, a gorgeous woman named Petra who had never once looked at her enough to even say hi to her, was now actively beaming at her, clapping softly as if Emma had won an Oscar. “Oh God,” she muttered under her breath, half-smiling, half-panicking.An intern offered her a lukewarm croissant. Mr. Simon from accounting that wasn’t supposed to be on her floor at
