Chapter 1

"Are you really stupid, Liz?” The harshness of Julian's voice hit her so hard. Liz felt her chest tighten, her hands trembling as she looked at him. She didn't mean to spill the water on him but he had a cold, furious face.

"I-I’m sorry," she whispered, clutching the glass tighter in her hand as though it could protect her.

"Sorry?" Julian sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. He snatched the glass from her hand, barely giving her a chance to back away before he splashed water down her dress, ice-cold and sharp against her skin.

She gasped, taking a step back, but he was faster. His open hand came down hard against her cheek, leaving her face stinging as she staggered from the force of it.

“Are you really going to cry over something so small?” He mocked as her vision blurred, her cheeks hot with both pain and humiliation,

She didn’t respond. Tears threatened to spill, but she bit down hard on her lip, refusing to give him the satisfaction.

The pain cut deeper than she could ever explain, but Julian looked at her as though she were nothing more than a pathetic figure, unworthy of his time. She didn’t recognize this man, the man she’d married just two years ago.

“Julian, stop it!” a voice cut through the tension. Liz looked up to see Mara, her step-sister, stepping between them, putting a hand on Julian’s arm. Mara’s gaze turned towards Liz, not with sympathy, but with a kind of controlled curiosity, as though she were watching an interesting scene play out.

“She’s crying, Julian,” Mara said softly, her tone almost placating. “You’ve made your point.”

Julian huffed, giving Liz a last look of contempt. “Fine. Take your sister out of here,” he said with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I can’t stand the sight of her right now.”

Mara turned to Liz, her eyes narrowing slightly. “What on earth did you do to set him off like this?” she asked, her voice low as she led Liz out of the kitchen and into the cold air of the back patio.

Liz shook her head, unable to form the words. A part of her wanted to collapse into her step-sister’s arms, but Mara’s question felt more like an accusation than an offer of comfort.

“I… I don’t know why he’s acting like this,” she murmured, her voice trembling. “It wasn’t like this before… before the miscarriage.” The word itself felt heavy, like a stone lodged in her throat. It was a reminder of everything she’d lost, and how each day had grown darker since then.

Mara watched her, her eyes calculating, though a faint trace of pity across her face. “Julian’s been through a lot too,” Mara said coolly. “He deserves a little understanding. But you should confront him, calmly,” she added as Liz opened her mouth. “You don’t want to push him further. He knows you’re still not… yourself since the loss. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be patient forever.” Liz nodded numbly.

When she got back to their shared home, the house felt darker than ever. She entered the living room and found Julian leaning against the fireplace, his gaze vacant and distant. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to approach him.

“Julian, I’m… I’m sorry,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Please, don’t let everything we’ve built go to waste. We’ve been through so much, and I…”

But he cut her off with a scoff, barely looking at her. “What we’ve built?” he repeated, as if the words were poison in his mouth. “You mean what you’ve wasted, Liz. You’re nothing but a barren disappointment.”

Barren? It echoed in her mind, louder than his voice, louder than the pounding of her own heart. She’d never imagined he would say something so cruel, so final.

“Did you just… did you just call me barren?” Her voice trembled as she looked up at him, a trace of hope in her eyes that maybe he’d take it back, that maybe he’d see the hurt he’d caused.

But Julian’s face was stone, unyielding. He barely looked at her as he moved past, shoving her aside without a word, leaving her feeling small, unwanted, as if she didn’t even exist in his world.

Liz stumbled back, feeling her strength drain from her, but she forced herself to walk toward the bedroom. She needed to escape his presence, if only for a moment.

But before she could reach the sanctuary of her room, another figure appeared in the doorway. Julian’s mother. She strode into the room, her eyes narrowing at Liz with an expression that bordered on contempt.

“Don’t blame my son for your misery. You deserve every bit of it. If you can’t give him a family, why should he waste his time on you?” She took a seat on the couch after hugging her son.

Her words cut deep, each one piercing Lizzy's chest. She could feel herself unraveling, a sob rising in her throat, but she choked it back, refusing to give them the satisfaction.

Without thinking, she turned and fled, out into the darkness, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the night air stung her cheeks.

For a moment, she stood outside in the chill, letting her pain wash over her, a hollow ache settling in her chest. She couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents the truth; she already knew they’d dismiss her pain, mock her weakness. She was alone.

When she finally re-entered the house, she found Julian’s mother still sitting in the living room, looking as if she’d never moved. Swallowing her pride, Liz approached, her voice low and defeated. “I’ll try harder… I’ll… I’ll get pregnant, I promise.”

The woman merely sniffed, waving a dismissive hand as if shooting a bothersome insect.

That night, as Liz lay in bed, she reached out tentatively to Julian, her heart aching with a yearning for even the slightest hint of tenderness. But he pulled away, his back turned to her with an air of finality that crushed her spirit.

Desperate, she texted Mara. “Julian won’t even look at me. What should I do?” She stared at the screen, waiting, hoping Mara would have some words of comfort.

“Does he still love me or is something bothering him?” Liz thought to herself.

She forcefully went to sleep, since she didn't get any message from Mara after waiting for a long time.

“He'd come around, I hope.” Then she rubbed her belly, “maybe when the baby comes”

Emma forced her lips into something resembling a smile, though she knew it didn’t convince Lily in the slightest. “Really, it’s nothing,” she said quickly, waving her hand as though shooing away invisible insects. “Just a headache.” Lily arched a brow, looking completely unimpressed. “A headache that makes you look like you’re about to hurl yourself off the balcony? Sure.” She didn’t press further, though, thank God. Instead, she slumped into the chair at the desk, tearing open the takeaway bag. The smell of pizza filled the air, making Emma suddenly voracious. “How was work?”, she asked. “I swear,” Lily began, passing Emma a slice that made the woman shriek in delight. Lily rolled her eyes at Emma. She’d been obsessed with greasy foods ever since Lily knew her, and now it was just ridiculous, only Emma got this excited over pizza. “Thank you Lily”, she said with big wet eyes, inhaling the slice. “You were saying something about work”. Lily, completely used to Emma’s pizz

Emma stared blankly at her empty screen, clutching the papers in her hand tightly. Lily was at work. She was in her room, sitting on her bed, and her world was colliding and collapsing.She. Was. Pregnant. She was fucking pregnant. “Argh!”, she let out a short scream. She was definitely dreaming, she closed her eyes and crossed her fingers, hoping she would wake up in a few minutes to realize this was just a dream her brain had concocted because of how much she missed Ross. But Emma knew it wasn’t a dream. She had done an official and non-official test, just casually, just to be sure she definitely wasn’t pregnant because of how dizzy she’d been feeling. She only did it for her own laughter, to rule it out of the reasons for her dizziness, but what was this?!She groaned again and folded in on herself. She had a baby in her. Ross put a baby in her. She slept with Ross one time and he put a baby in her. It felt surreal, like she was watching in on another person’s life and not her

The room, although large, seemed to shrink around Ross. He had never been someone who saw the world in color, but for a short period of time, he had. Emma, she’d been the color in his greyscale life, and because the universe hated him, abhorred him even, she left. Just when he had made his intentions known, when he had begun to make plans, she just went.He stretched his hand and picked up a bottle, eyebrows furrowing when he realized it was empty. He cocked his head over his chair and looked down to see all the bottles around him, they were all empty. He groaned.Pushing back his seat, he all but stumbled to his homebar, picking up two bottles, shaking his head, and making it three. Why could he still feel? Why did his chest still constrict? Why did his heart still hurt? Why did it still feel like the blood that was running in his veins was icy and cold?It had been weeks, he had done everything he could to get numb, but nothing seemed to work. Everything reminded him of her, everyth

The night fell heavy around her, pressing down like a second blanket. Emma had gone to bed beside Lily’s soft chatter about work and morning errands, but when sleep claimed her, it dragged her into someone else’s life.In her dreams, she was small again, far too small. The world was filled with towering walls and heavy voices.A woman’s hand brushed her hair, careful enough not to tug, but careless enough to sting. Her mother’s face was blurred, like smoke in a mirror, but the cold in her tone was sharp. “Don’t fidget. Don’t embarrass me.”The room smelled of stale perfume, and dust clung to curtains that never opened. She wanted to run outside, to see light, to play, but she stayed seated, obedient, waiting for praise that never came. And in the quiet of her little room, she would press her face into her pillow and whisper to herself, “One day, someone will love me.”But no one came.Physically, Emma subconsciously shed a tear. The dream shifted. Time leapt forward. She was older, dr

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 45

Emma had been moving through the city like a ghost at first, half-alive in various lobbies and silent cafes, but now, weeks later, she had clawed her way into something resembling a rhythm. She wasn’t just meeting people, she was making herself useful. The kind of usefulness that made her number show up on people’s phones when they were stuck in their business and needed something done. She had a notebook full of names already. Producers, assistants, a woman who ran a little gallery out of her apartment, even the bartender at a place downtown who somehow knew everybody worth knowing. It wasn’t glamorous. It was hard work, harder than an office job, with endless follow-ups and little favors. But the web was forming, and she was in the middle of it. Before too long, her name would have been widespread as a consultant, she just knew it.She had to say, working with the little business owners was a million times more entertaining than she had expected. Like the morning she sat cross-le

Chapter 44 The spider was gone the next morning.Emma lay in the same narrow bed of the hotel room, one arm over her eyes, trying to convince herself that its absence was a good omen. Maybe it had crawled out through a crack in the ceiling, or maybe housekeeping had found it and flushed it down the drain. But she couldn’t shake the ridiculous notion that even the spider had sensed how temporary this stop in her life was. That nothing stayed in place around her for long. She had thought running would be harder. That leaving Ross, leaving the Dale foundation, leaving Eliana, would feel like shackling herself to grief and dragging it across every city block. But the strangest part was how easy it had been in practice. Pack a bag. Get on a couple ubers. Buy a cheap room. Disappear. The logistics were insultingly simple. The ache, though, was the part she hadn’t accounted for.It was still raw, a gnawing thing deep under her ribs. She hadn’t even given herself time to process the last day
