Chapter 2

Liz stirringly opened her eyes gently, waking up to the early morning beauty.

She stared at her husband who hadn't shown her love in a few weeks, and she still wondered why?

“Could he be stressed?” She thought to herself.

Just when she was about to get herself up to prepare breakfast for him, at least to get his favorable expression again, she stopped.

"Liz, have you checked your phone?"

The sound of Julian’s voice startled her from her restlessness. She blinked, and against the light streaming through the windows.

Her phone buzzed on the bedside table, and she reached for it groggily. A message glowed on the screen:

“Join us for a grand sailing gala party to celebrate Voss Enterprises' 50th anniversary! A night of luxury, live entertainment, and recognition of our new staff. Setting sail this evening, don’t miss it!”

A small smile crept onto Liz’s face. The gala was a big deal, marking a decade of her family’s hard work. Maybe it would be a chance for her and Julian to reconnect.

She imagined them on the deck, the moonlight casting a glow as they celebrated together. For once, the idea filled her with hope.

As she set the phone down, another notification lit up. This one was from Mara:

“Julian called me early this morning to help him with breakfast. Coming over now. See you soon!”

Liz frowned slightly. “Why would Julian ask Mara to help with breakfast?” she wondered. Just as she was about to reply, her step-sister walked into the room, looking fresh and cheerful.

“Good morning!” Mara greeted brightly, brushing past Liz’s confusion.

“Mara,” Liz asked slowly, sitting up in bed, “what are you doing here so early?”

“Oh, relax, Liz,” Mara replied with a small laugh, heading toward the kitchen. “Julian asked me to help with breakfast, and I thought I’d swing by. Besides, I figured you’d appreciate the company.”

Liz stood and followed her. “I could’ve done it myself. Why would Julian ask you to help?”

Mara glanced over her shoulder and smiled. “Liz, it’s no big deal. I’m your sister, after all. Let’s work together on this. Look at it this way; we can cook the meal, and I’ll let him think you did it all. That way, Julian will eat the food without complaining.”

Liz hesitated, but the sincerity in Mara’s voice reassured her. “Okay,” she finally said. “That sounds like a good idea. Thank you.”

Together, the two of them worked on breakfast. Liz handled most of the cooking while Mara plated the dishes.

It felt comforting to have Mara there, a reminder of the bond they’d shared since childhood. Despite everything, Liz trusted and loved her step-sister.

When the food was ready, Mara picked up the plates and headed toward the dining room. “I’ll serve it to Julian,” she offered.

Liz smiled. “Thank you, Mara.”

From the kitchen doorway, Liz watched Julian eat. Mara sat next to him, laughing at something he’d said. He seemed to be in a rare good mood.

“This is good,” Julian said, nodding as he took another bite. “Nice work, Mara. You’re better at this.”

Before Liz could step in and explain, Julian stood up and leaned over, pressing a kiss to Mara’s hands.

Liz’s heart sank, but she forced herself to stay calm. “Julian,” she said softly, stepping into the room. “Actually, I….”

“What?” he snapped, his expression turning cold.

“I was the one who cooked it,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly.

Julian’s face darkened, and the warmth he’d shown just moments ago disappeared entirely. “How dare you accuse Mara of lying?” he barked.

“I…I wasn’t accusing her,” Liz stammered. “I just thought you should know that….”

Before she could finish, Julian’s hand came down hard against her cheek, the sharp sound echoing through the room. She stumbled backward, clutching her face as tears filled her eyes.

“Shut your mouth!” Julian yelled, his voice seething with anger. “You have no shame, do you? Pathetic.”

The second slap sent her to the floor, her vision blurring as pain radiated through her cheek. She sat there, stunned and broken, as Julian stormed out of the room, leaving her alone with Mara.

“Liz,” Mara’s voice came softly as she knelt beside her. “Are you okay?”

Liz looked up, her tears streaming freely. She pushed herself to her feet, wiping her face with shaking hands. “Why didn’t you say anything?” she asked hoarsely. “Why didn’t you tell him I was the one who cooked the food?”

“I wanted to,” Mara replied quickly, her eyes wide. “I really did, but everything happened so fast. I didn’t expect Julian to act that way. I was just… shocked.”

Liz stared at her, trying to process her words. She wanted to believe Mara, she needed to, but she hoped her sister still got her back like she used to. “Mara, I can’t keep living like this,” she whispered. “I need to tell my parents. They’ll understand.”

Mara’s face tensed. “Liz, no. You can’t do that.”

“Why not?” Liz asked, her voice cracking with desperation.

“Because,” Mara began, choosing her words carefully, “if you tell them, they’ll want you to leave Julian. You know how they are, they’ll push for a divorce. And if you divorce Julian…” She hesitated, her voice dropping to a near whisper. “You won’t be the heiress anymore.”

Liz blinked, confused and hurt. “What does being the heiress have to do with divorcing Julian?”

Emma forced her lips into something resembling a smile, though she knew it didn’t convince Lily in the slightest. “Really, it’s nothing,” she said quickly, waving her hand as though shooing away invisible insects. “Just a headache.” Lily arched a brow, looking completely unimpressed. “A headache that makes you look like you’re about to hurl yourself off the balcony? Sure.” She didn’t press further, though, thank God. Instead, she slumped into the chair at the desk, tearing open the takeaway bag. The smell of pizza filled the air, making Emma suddenly voracious. “How was work?”, she asked. “I swear,” Lily began, passing Emma a slice that made the woman shriek in delight. Lily rolled her eyes at Emma. She’d been obsessed with greasy foods ever since Lily knew her, and now it was just ridiculous, only Emma got this excited over pizza. “Thank you Lily”, she said with big wet eyes, inhaling the slice. “You were saying something about work”. Lily, completely used to Emma’s pizz

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 48

Emma stared blankly at her empty screen, clutching the papers in her hand tightly. Lily was at work. She was in her room, sitting on her bed, and her world was colliding and collapsing.She. Was. Pregnant. She was fucking pregnant. “Argh!”, she let out a short scream. She was definitely dreaming, she closed her eyes and crossed her fingers, hoping she would wake up in a few minutes to realize this was just a dream her brain had concocted because of how much she missed Ross. But Emma knew it wasn’t a dream. She had done an official and non-official test, just casually, just to be sure she definitely wasn’t pregnant because of how dizzy she’d been feeling. She only did it for her own laughter, to rule it out of the reasons for her dizziness, but what was this?!She groaned again and folded in on herself. She had a baby in her. Ross put a baby in her. She slept with Ross one time and he put a baby in her. It felt surreal, like she was watching in on another person’s life and not her

The room, although large, seemed to shrink around Ross. He had never been someone who saw the world in color, but for a short period of time, he had. Emma, she’d been the color in his greyscale life, and because the universe hated him, abhorred him even, she left. Just when he had made his intentions known, when he had begun to make plans, she just went.He stretched his hand and picked up a bottle, eyebrows furrowing when he realized it was empty. He cocked his head over his chair and looked down to see all the bottles around him, they were all empty. He groaned.Pushing back his seat, he all but stumbled to his homebar, picking up two bottles, shaking his head, and making it three. Why could he still feel? Why did his chest still constrict? Why did his heart still hurt? Why did it still feel like the blood that was running in his veins was icy and cold?It had been weeks, he had done everything he could to get numb, but nothing seemed to work. Everything reminded him of her, everyth

The night fell heavy around her, pressing down like a second blanket. Emma had gone to bed beside Lily’s soft chatter about work and morning errands, but when sleep claimed her, it dragged her into someone else’s life.In her dreams, she was small again, far too small. The world was filled with towering walls and heavy voices.A woman’s hand brushed her hair, careful enough not to tug, but careless enough to sting. Her mother’s face was blurred, like smoke in a mirror, but the cold in her tone was sharp. “Don’t fidget. Don’t embarrass me.”The room smelled of stale perfume, and dust clung to curtains that never opened. She wanted to run outside, to see light, to play, but she stayed seated, obedient, waiting for praise that never came. And in the quiet of her little room, she would press her face into her pillow and whisper to herself, “One day, someone will love me.”But no one came.Physically, Emma subconsciously shed a tear. The dream shifted. Time leapt forward. She was older, dr

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 45

Emma had been moving through the city like a ghost at first, half-alive in various lobbies and silent cafes, but now, weeks later, she had clawed her way into something resembling a rhythm. She wasn’t just meeting people, she was making herself useful. The kind of usefulness that made her number show up on people’s phones when they were stuck in their business and needed something done. She had a notebook full of names already. Producers, assistants, a woman who ran a little gallery out of her apartment, even the bartender at a place downtown who somehow knew everybody worth knowing. It wasn’t glamorous. It was hard work, harder than an office job, with endless follow-ups and little favors. But the web was forming, and she was in the middle of it. Before too long, her name would have been widespread as a consultant, she just knew it.She had to say, working with the little business owners was a million times more entertaining than she had expected. Like the morning she sat cross-le

Chapter 44 The spider was gone the next morning.Emma lay in the same narrow bed of the hotel room, one arm over her eyes, trying to convince herself that its absence was a good omen. Maybe it had crawled out through a crack in the ceiling, or maybe housekeeping had found it and flushed it down the drain. But she couldn’t shake the ridiculous notion that even the spider had sensed how temporary this stop in her life was. That nothing stayed in place around her for long. She had thought running would be harder. That leaving Ross, leaving the Dale foundation, leaving Eliana, would feel like shackling herself to grief and dragging it across every city block. But the strangest part was how easy it had been in practice. Pack a bag. Get on a couple ubers. Buy a cheap room. Disappear. The logistics were insultingly simple. The ache, though, was the part she hadn’t accounted for.It was still raw, a gnawing thing deep under her ribs. She hadn’t even given herself time to process the last day
