登入Rosalie's POV
The room was dead quiet, which made the phone ringing feel almost aggressive — like it was in a hurry about something.
I answered it in front of everyone. Said a quick warm hello, then put it on speaker.
The same voice that had just come out of Mr. Brown's phone filled the room.

Rosalie's POV"Tell me." I leaned in a little — I'd never seen Nora hesitate like this before. She lowered her voice. "I heard Lucian's going to some party tonight.""I know. He mentioned it.""Not like a regular business thing." Her tone went somewhere more careful. "Those people are known for going all out. You're seriously okay with him going to something like that?"That explained why she'd been so sure things between us weren't great."I'm sure it's fine. He's probably just there for business.""If you say so… oh, hold on—" Her phone started going off. She picked it up. "Who is sending me like a hundred messages, oh my god, I'm muting you."She was frowning at the screen — and then she clicked into something and her jaw dropped. Eyes going wide, not saying a word. She looked at me, then immediately back at the screen."What is it?" I asked.Nora sat there frozen, murmuring something to herself. It sounded like: I really jinxed it…I leaned over to look. The second I saw the photo
Rosalie's POVBefore I could say anything, another voice jumped in from behind him. "Me too!"Nora had come with him.She stepped out from behind Max and came straight to me. "Something happen? You looked like you were completely checked out just now."She squinted. "Don't tell me Vanessa pulled something again."I let out a small breath. "She's part of it. But there's also work, and other stuff…"Nora rolled her eyes. "She's definitely the main reason. Next time I see her I'm handling it personally, on your behalf."Listening to her lay out exactly how she'd deal with Vanessa — full detail, very animated — something in my chest got lighter. I actually laughed. "Just hearing you say that is enough.""Good. Don't waste your energy being miserable over someone like her.""Okay but — why did you both show up? I thought Max just had something to drop off." I looked between them.Max produced a box from behind his back. "Oh, I do have something. Take a look."I'd already caught the smell —
My brain was still basically offline, not tracking what Lucian was saying. All I knew was he repositioned me back on top of him, hands on my waist, thumbs brushing across my stomach. "Thought you wanted my baby. You're gonna have to put in more work than that."He wanted me to move again like before, but my legs were completely done — shaking, no strength left. I shook my head weakly. "No more… I can't…"Lucian narrowed his eyes. "Can't what?"He squeezed my hips. "Don't want a baby, or don't want to be in bed with me?"When I didn't answer, he flipped me onto my back, pressed down over me, and started driving into me hard. I couldn't handle it — chin tilting back, spine arching off the bed, both hands white-knuckling the headboard."I'm so tired," I managed between gasps, "stop, I can't—"I pushed weakly at his chest.Lucian's mouth curved. "So dramatic."He caught both my wrists in one hand and pinned them above my head, then pressed into me deeper, harder, watching my face the whol
Rosalie's POVLucian had me trapped between him and the kitchen island — one hand braced on the counter, the other tilting my jaw so my face was turned another way — and then he kissed me, dragging his lips slowly along my cheek like he had all the time in the world.Every single one made my heart slam harder. This wasn't like before, all heat and urgency. There was something slower to it now, something careful, like he was savoring something he didn't want to rush.I grabbed his wrist. "We're in the kitchen…"Lucian turned my face back toward him. "Nothing wrong with that."Then he lifted me up and set me on the counter in one clean move, stepping between my legs and pulling my hips flush against him before I even registered what was happening. It all happened so fast I let out a little gasp and grabbed onto his neck just to hold on. I could've sworn he laughed — low, quiet — and then he dipped his head and kissed me.He bit my lower lip, dragged his tongue across it, then pushed pas
Rosalie's POVTheir voices dropped after that and I didn't catch the rest.Lunch with Max moved fast. I'd expected it to stay polite and surface-level, but he was good at finding things to talk about. Turned out we'd both gone to school on the West Coast — we ended up trading stories about a terrible Italian place we'd both made the mistake of trying, and what we'd do on weekends, including this old bowling alley that was basically a college institution. The conversation closed the distance between us quickly, and pulled up memories of that time in my life I hadn't thought about in a while.Things were simpler back then. I didn't know yet that the parents I'd grown up with weren't my birth parents. None of it was this complicated.Max pushed pasta around his plate. "You ever think about going back to visit? You've probably got people from school still out there."I touched my cheek. "Actually yeah — maybe next month? Once I get through this one big design project, things should ease
Rosalie's POV"Max? How did you—"Vanessa cut me off before I could finish. "What are you doing here?"She was gripping her soaked jacket, brow tight — mortified, I think, that Max of all people was seeing her like this.Max looked completely at ease. "I'm here to see Rosalie."Vanessa's face went red in real time. Her feet seemed to stop working.Meanwhile the colleagues who hadn't fully dispersed were already staring. "Okay, who is that?""You know Nora, right? The one who comes in to deal with procurement? This is her older brother.""Oh — yeah, I remember Nora. The blunt one who never really got along with Vanessa.""The resemblance is actually kind of insane."Max turned and waved at them easily, which sent a quiet ripple of excitement through the group. He turned back and held up a paper bag. "My dad had some cigars he wanted to pass along to your father. I was in the area anyway, so.""Oh, right—" I reached out to take it without thinking. Natural as anything.Until I noticed t
Rosalie's POVLucian's eyes sharpened. "Know what you can say and what you can't."The cold coming off him was enough to make me flinch. "I won't say a word to your grandparents. Not about any of this.""Good." He leaned back and closed his eyes.I couldn't work out why he'd shown up to that dinner
Rosalie's POVI looked up. Lucian was looking down at me from close range, and my heart dropped a full beat.I stepped back and put some space between us.My parents lit up the moment they registered it was him. "Lucian — we thought we might not see you tonight."Lucian smiled, barely, in that way
Helen stroked Vanessa's hair, her voice soft and reassuring. "Don't worry. Your father and I promised you, and we meant it. We'll figure it out."Christopher had been pressing his lips together for a while before he finally spoke. He looked uncomfortable about it. "Vanessa's promotion has been in
Rosalie's POVThe girl in front of me had sleek golden hair cut to her chin, one side tucked behind her ear. Her face was all disgust — until I looked up, and it dropped into surprise."Sorry. I thought you were someone else."She said it fast and clean. The friend beside her pulled her away with a
