Chapter 1

Author: Mint Rose
As soon as I finished speaking, Shane Garner, the handsome teenager in front of me, knitted his brows even more tightly.

In my previous life, he was my adopted older brother.

He was not only the knight in shining armor who had rescued me from the human traffickers, but also the executioner who had shipped me off to a psychiatric hospital many years later.

He'd stood there and watched as those people repeatedly tortured me with electric shocks and forced drugs down my throat for five long years.

He was responsible for the suffering that had ultimately driven me to jump off a building.

Shane pressed his lips together and stepped forward, reaching out to pull me toward him.

"Don't be scared. I'm here to help you."

The moment I saw his hand, I instinctively shrank back.

In my previous life, on my 18th birthday, I had made a cake myself and waited for Shane to come home. However, two medical attendants in white uniforms showed up with him. He stood beneath the crystal chandelier in the living room, holding a cigarette and eyeing me coldly.

"If you hadn't told Mom and Dad that Cassie lashed out at you, they wouldn't have scolded her, and she wouldn't have run out of the house! You're going to spend the rest of your life in the psychiatric facility to atone for her death."

For the next five years, I was either chained to a cold bed and forced to consume pills that left me delirious and barely conscious most of the time, or strapped to a chair and subjected to wave after wave of electric shocks until I wet myself from the excruciating agony.

Every time Shane "visited" me, he would stand outside the glass window and watch me with cold indifference. It was always clear from his expression that he thought I deserved every bit of the torture.

All at once, the loathing and despair washed over me, threatening to consume me whole.

I clenched my fingers tightly around the trafficker's rough hand, my knuckles turning white and my nails digging into my palm.

The man was caught off guard by the sudden force. He turned his head and looked at me in surprise.

But he was quick to catch on and immediately played along. After patting me on the head, he flashed Shane a pleasant smile and said, "You have no idea what kids are like these days! My niece is just throwing a tantrum.

"We had a little argument just now, so she started blabbering all that nonsense. Don't worry about it, young man. We'll be taking her home now."

With that, the two men each grabbed one of my arms and hurried toward the roadside, afraid Shane might keep pressing them.

The farther we walked, the more desolate the surroundings became. Only after we reached an isolated area with no one around did the two men let go of me and lean against a nearby tree trunk to catch their breath.

The shorter, stockier of the two human traffickers said in a low, impatient tone, "That little kid was acting rather strange just now. Do you think she's been scared witless? Has she gone mad?"

The taller, lankier man snorted before squeezing my arm.

"Who cares if she's gone mad or not? We've already arranged the handoff for today. Once we sell her off, we'll leave with the money, and it won't be any of our business whether she's right in the head."

Keeping my eyes down, I listened to their exchange in silence. A cold sense of dread filled my heart.

Obviously, I knew these people wanted to sell me off. However, I didn't want to reunite with the Garners, even though they were my biological family.

I didn't want to have anything to do with them, and I certainly didn't want to cross paths with my so-called brother who'd made my life a living hell.

Nevertheless, I knew I'd only be jumping out of the pan and into the fire if I got sold.

On the day of the planetarium's opening, a huge crowd showed up. Mom and Dad stood beside me as I cut the ribbon. When a reporter interviewed me, I smiled and said that my greatest dream was to inspire more children to fall in love with the starry sky and the universe. One day, while I was teaching a group of children about Saturn, several people walked through the entrance.I glanced up and saw Shane, with Cassidy beside him. A little boy, about three or four years old, held Cassidy's hand. He looked like her son.Shane saw me, too. He froze for a moment, his footsteps coming to a halt.Cassidy noticed me as well. An awkward expression crossed her face, and her grip on the child's hand tightened slightly.I ignored them and kept teaching the children, acting as though I hadn't seen them. After the lesson, the children scattered excitedly to play with the planetary models. I turned to get some water, and as I approached the entrance, I ran into Shane. His lips parted as he look

After hearing what Shane had to say, I felt absolutely nothing. I'd already suffered through all that torment in my previous life and died because of it. What was the point of saying all this now?I eyed him coldly and said, "Are you done? If you are, I'm leaving. Don't come looking for me again, and don't bring up anything from my previous life. I don't want to hear it, and I don't need your family's compensation. The best way you can make it up to me is to stay away from me."After a pause, I added, "And one more thing—I hope you guys enjoy your life in Southshire. It's best if you never show your faces in Beldingham again. Even the sight of you guys makes me sick."Without sparing Shane another glance, I walked off. On my way toward the cafeteria, I ran into a classmate, who studied me with a concerned frown."Nerissa, who was that guy just now? Was he harassing you? Do you want me to call security?"I shook my head and smiled. "No need. He's nobody important. He won't be comin

I shook Shane's hand off and pulled out my phone, as if I were about to call campus security."I have nothing to say to you. If you don't leave now, I'll call security.""I know you hate me. I'm not asking you to forgive me." Shane looked at me, his voice low. "I just came to tell you that our family is preparing to move to Southshire. We won't be coming back to Beldingham."Mom and Dad have also agreed that they'll never come looking for you again. You won't have to worry about that anymore."I was a little taken aback. I didn't expect them to actually move out of the city. But that suited me just fine. Once they were gone, I'd never have to see them again. I could finally live in peace.I nodded, my tone flat as I said, "Got it. Anything else? If not, I'm leaving.""Wait. There's one more thing."Shane took a debit card from his pocket and held it out to me. "There's 80 million in this account. Mom and Dad are giving it to you as compensation. They know you won't see them, so

Cassidy continued, "After I died, my soul remained in the world. I watched Mom and Dad throw out all your belongings. I watched them put my portrait up in the living room and accuse you of being a jinx. I saw Shane shipping you off to a psychiatric facility."I witnessed the way they strapped you to the bed, forced those drugs down your throat, and subjected you to electric shocks. You kept sobbing in pain, and I cried with you. I wanted to tell them it wasn't your fault, that I was the one who had chosen to run away, but they couldn't hear me."And when you jumped off the building, I was standing right beside you. I tried to grab you, but I couldn't hold onto you. I watched you hit the ground, your white dress turning red with blood. "At that moment, all I could think was that if I ever got another chance, I would never throw another tantrum. I would never let you suffer so much again."Cassidy was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Her fingertips, clenched around the hem o

I sat on the couch, clutching my phone, my palms slick with sweat and my heart in turmoil. I refreshed the local news over and over, terrified of coming across any bad news. When I came across a report that read "Car Accident on Outskirts of City Leaves Young Woman in White Dress Dead at the Scene", I was so startled that I nearly dropped my phone.I hesitated for a long time before finally checking the victim's photo. Once I confirmed it wasn't her, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. By then, cold sweat had already soaked the back of my blouse. The search went on for three days with no news of Cassidy.Maureen called Mom several times, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. She said that if anything happened to Cassidy, she wouldn't want to live anymore, either.I grew increasingly anxious, too. I could barely eat, and I lost three pounds in just three days.Mom was worried sick about me. She prepared all kinds of delicious food for me every day and tried to reassur

Since the Garners stopped bothering me, I thought the matter was finally behind us.Then came the day before my first semester of college.I was packing my luggage when I got a message from Maureen."Nessa, could you please think it over one more time? Your dad and I really miss you. If you don't want to come back to us, how about we visit you at school from time to time? You don't have to acknowledge us as your parents. Just let us see you, okay?"I didn't even bother reading it all the way through. I blocked the number immediately, then added Frank's number to my blacklist as well.I got my peace back again. The next day, James drove me to my campus. I registered, picked up my student card, and unpacked in the dormitory. After a full day of running around, I was so exhausted I just wanted to collapse onto my bed and sleep.Suddenly, my phone buzzed. A message from an unfamiliar number had arrived. Thinking it might be from my academic adviser, I opened it, only to find that
