Chapter 2

Author: Mint Rose
I couldn't just stand around and let these two human traffickers determine my fate.

My eyes darted around as I secretly scanned my surroundings. The area was extremely remote, with nothing but weeds lining the roadside.

The human traffickers were two muscular grown men. Even if I ran for my life, an eight-year-old child like me had no chance of outrunning them.

After catching their breath, the two men grabbed me again and dragged me along, their pace quickening as the surroundings became increasingly desolate. My heart clenched as anxiety spread through every inch of my body.

Now that I'd been given a rare second chance at life, I absolutely couldn't die like this.

Just as my palms began to sweat from desperation, a striking patch of blue caught my eye in the distance. It was a police kiosk.

My heart leaped. This was my chance!

Without another moment's hesitation, I summoned every ounce of strength I had and sank my teeth into the hand of the trafficker gripping my wrist. The sharp pain made him let out a muffled cry, and he instinctively released my hand.

"Fucking hell! I'm gonna kill you, you little bitch!"

I seized the opportunity to break free from the other man's grip. Putting every ounce of strength my little body could muster into my legs, I sprinted toward the police kiosk, screaming at the top of my lungs as I ran.

"Help! These two men wanna sell me off! Help!"

My shrill cries for help rang out through the deserted alley.

The two traffickers quickly realized what was happening. Cursing furiously, they chased after me, their footsteps drawing closer and closer.

Just as I felt someone behind me reach for the back of my T-shirt, the police officer inside the kiosk rushed out after hearing the commotion.

Spotting the police officer, the two traffickers cursed viciously, but they didn't dare stick around any longer. They fled in the opposite direction, disappearing into the depths of the alley in no time.

My legs gave way, and I collapsed straight into the police officer's warm, sturdy embrace. The tension that pumped adrenaline into my body drained out of me. My body went limp, and I started gasping for air.

The officer patted my back with a warm hand as he gently comforted me. Buried in his embrace, I felt a surge of almost twisted satisfaction well up inside me.

This time around, the Garners could forget about ever reuniting with their biological daughter.

The officer continued to cradle me in his arms as he brought me back to the police kiosk.

There was warm water on the table, along with a few packets of cookies. He crouched in front of me and asked in a soft voice, "Can you tell me what happened? You can take your time. You don't have to be scared anymore."

I drooped my head and allowed my shoulders to shake a little, looking like a child who'd just been through a traumatizing ordeal.

"Those people grabbed me to sell me off."

"How many of them are there?"

"Two."

I did my best to describe the two traffickers, telling the officer their heights, builds, clothing, and other distinguishing features. I was careful not to leave anything out.

After I finished, the officer furrowed his brows and asked me gently, "Where are your parents? Do you have any other family? We can tell your family to come and pick you up."

My eyes reddened, and tears started to fall without warning. I vehemently shook my head, choking on my sobs as I struggled to get the words out.

"My mom and dad… passed away a long time ago. I don't have any other family."

I wasn't lying. My adoptive parents had been orphans themselves. They had no family of their own, and since they'd died, too, I had no family either.

The Garners were related to me by blood, which technically made them my family. But in reality, they were total strangers who'd barged their way into my life and proceeded to destroy it. I wasn't going to consider them my family.

The officer didn't expect to hear that. He quickly pulled out some tissues to wipe my tears before pulling up my records in the system.

Once he finished reading everything, he sighed to his colleague and said, "I just confirmed it. Both her parents are gone, and she doesn't have any other relatives listed in the system. She really is alone in the world."

On the day of the planetarium's opening, a huge crowd showed up. Mom and Dad stood beside me as I cut the ribbon. When a reporter interviewed me, I smiled and said that my greatest dream was to inspire more children to fall in love with the starry sky and the universe. One day, while I was teaching a group of children about Saturn, several people walked through the entrance.I glanced up and saw Shane, with Cassidy beside him. A little boy, about three or four years old, held Cassidy's hand. He looked like her son.Shane saw me, too. He froze for a moment, his footsteps coming to a halt.Cassidy noticed me as well. An awkward expression crossed her face, and her grip on the child's hand tightened slightly.I ignored them and kept teaching the children, acting as though I hadn't seen them. After the lesson, the children scattered excitedly to play with the planetary models. I turned to get some water, and as I approached the entrance, I ran into Shane. His lips parted as he look

After hearing what Shane had to say, I felt absolutely nothing. I'd already suffered through all that torment in my previous life and died because of it. What was the point of saying all this now?I eyed him coldly and said, "Are you done? If you are, I'm leaving. Don't come looking for me again, and don't bring up anything from my previous life. I don't want to hear it, and I don't need your family's compensation. The best way you can make it up to me is to stay away from me."After a pause, I added, "And one more thing—I hope you guys enjoy your life in Southshire. It's best if you never show your faces in Beldingham again. Even the sight of you guys makes me sick."Without sparing Shane another glance, I walked off. On my way toward the cafeteria, I ran into a classmate, who studied me with a concerned frown."Nerissa, who was that guy just now? Was he harassing you? Do you want me to call security?"I shook my head and smiled. "No need. He's nobody important. He won't be comin

I shook Shane's hand off and pulled out my phone, as if I were about to call campus security."I have nothing to say to you. If you don't leave now, I'll call security.""I know you hate me. I'm not asking you to forgive me." Shane looked at me, his voice low. "I just came to tell you that our family is preparing to move to Southshire. We won't be coming back to Beldingham."Mom and Dad have also agreed that they'll never come looking for you again. You won't have to worry about that anymore."I was a little taken aback. I didn't expect them to actually move out of the city. But that suited me just fine. Once they were gone, I'd never have to see them again. I could finally live in peace.I nodded, my tone flat as I said, "Got it. Anything else? If not, I'm leaving.""Wait. There's one more thing."Shane took a debit card from his pocket and held it out to me. "There's 80 million in this account. Mom and Dad are giving it to you as compensation. They know you won't see them, so

Cassidy continued, "After I died, my soul remained in the world. I watched Mom and Dad throw out all your belongings. I watched them put my portrait up in the living room and accuse you of being a jinx. I saw Shane shipping you off to a psychiatric facility."I witnessed the way they strapped you to the bed, forced those drugs down your throat, and subjected you to electric shocks. You kept sobbing in pain, and I cried with you. I wanted to tell them it wasn't your fault, that I was the one who had chosen to run away, but they couldn't hear me."And when you jumped off the building, I was standing right beside you. I tried to grab you, but I couldn't hold onto you. I watched you hit the ground, your white dress turning red with blood. "At that moment, all I could think was that if I ever got another chance, I would never throw another tantrum. I would never let you suffer so much again."Cassidy was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Her fingertips, clenched around the hem o

I sat on the couch, clutching my phone, my palms slick with sweat and my heart in turmoil. I refreshed the local news over and over, terrified of coming across any bad news. When I came across a report that read "Car Accident on Outskirts of City Leaves Young Woman in White Dress Dead at the Scene", I was so startled that I nearly dropped my phone.I hesitated for a long time before finally checking the victim's photo. Once I confirmed it wasn't her, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. By then, cold sweat had already soaked the back of my blouse. The search went on for three days with no news of Cassidy.Maureen called Mom several times, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. She said that if anything happened to Cassidy, she wouldn't want to live anymore, either.I grew increasingly anxious, too. I could barely eat, and I lost three pounds in just three days.Mom was worried sick about me. She prepared all kinds of delicious food for me every day and tried to reassur

Since the Garners stopped bothering me, I thought the matter was finally behind us.Then came the day before my first semester of college.I was packing my luggage when I got a message from Maureen."Nessa, could you please think it over one more time? Your dad and I really miss you. If you don't want to come back to us, how about we visit you at school from time to time? You don't have to acknowledge us as your parents. Just let us see you, okay?"I didn't even bother reading it all the way through. I blocked the number immediately, then added Frank's number to my blacklist as well.I got my peace back again. The next day, James drove me to my campus. I registered, picked up my student card, and unpacked in the dormitory. After a full day of running around, I was so exhausted I just wanted to collapse onto my bed and sleep.Suddenly, my phone buzzed. A message from an unfamiliar number had arrived. Thinking it might be from my academic adviser, I opened it, only to find that
