Hostile Elegance

last update Last Updated: 2025-08-12 23:29:28

"Serena, huh?"

William’s heartbeat faltered the moment he heard the name. The name was close to the woman who haunted him every time it rained. Not out of longing for sweet memories, but from a hatred that burned with relentless fury.

"Yes, sir," his assistant confirmed. "Rumored to be Martin Serpentine’s hidden daughter. No public records, but her influence is rising fast."

William fell silent again with eyes fixed on the file in front of him. He studied the numbers, the projections, and the strategy. It was a sharp document. Precise, calculated, no fluff, and no empty promises.

"Damn it!" he clenched his fist once more.

The offer was compelling and dangerous at the same time. He knew the Serpentine family. They never crawled their way into Velmond without a reason, unless they smelled weakness or wanted something more.

"Set up the meeting!"

"You’re accepting it, sir?"

"I’m not accepting anything," William snapped, tossing the document aside. "I just want to see how far they’re willing to go in this game!"

***

The meeting was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. sharp at the upper conference floor of Velmond International. The air conditioning was cold just the way William liked it. He stood by the glass wall, watching the skyline as the city stretched beneath him.

He didn’t know what to expect from a Serpentine. Let alone her, Serena. The name refused to sit quietly in his mind.

"Sir," his assistant spoke from the doorway. "They’re here."

Footsteps echoed lightly across the marble flooring after it. The doors opened with a smooth hiss. Serena walked in, not rushed and not hesitant as if time itself bent to her presence.

She was elegant. Tailored ivory blouse tucked into high-waisted black slacks, a minimalist watch on one wrist, and heels that didn’t scream for attention but commanded it anyway.

"Mr. Velmond."

Her jet-black hair was pulled back into a sleek, understated bun. Revealing the gentle, flawless contours of a face that didn’t belong in boardrooms. She didn’t look like a businesswoman. She looked like a warning, making William's breath hitch for less than a heartbeat.

Familiar, too familiar. But no, that couldn’t be. Selena was dead. He crushed the thought as quickly as it came.

"Thank you for agreeing to this meeting," Serena greeted with a voice smooth and perfectly poised. Her tone was neither warm nor cold. Just formal enough to be respectful, but laced with something harder to name.

"Hmm."

William studied her with a gaze narrowing slightly. He extended a hand. She took it briefly. And just like that, she let go. His years of experience told him she was playing a very calculated game, but her face drew him in despite everything.

"We appreciate the opportunity," she continued with a smile. "I understand your company is navigating a transitional period. That's a big deal, isn't it?"

"Let’s not pretend this is charity," William replied, leaning against the edge of the conference table. "The Serpentines never move without gain in mind!"

"And Velmond never accepts meetings unless they’re desperate!"

A faint smile played at the corners of Serena’s lips. For a beat, silence reigned. William chuckled with dry restraint.

"Touché! But that doesn't mean I can easily forget the incident that took my mother's life!"

"I’m not sure I understand what you're referring to, Mr. Velmond," Serena replied calmly, though something flickered in her eyes. "I'm sorry for your loss."

Without waiting for William’s response, Serena took her seat. Every movement of hers was effortlessly drew attention. She is like a queen playing chess in a room of amateurs.

William sat across from her, but his eyes never left her face. He couldn’t shake it. The way her mouth twitched before she smiled. The eyes that didn’t flinch. Not once did it make him stop thinking.

"Have we met before?" he asked suddenly making Serena pause, just slightly.

"Not to my knowledge."

"Really?"

"Though I imagine you meet many women, Mr. Velmond."

William let the insinuation hang in the air. He wanted a reaction, but Serena gave him nothing.

The meeting ran longer than expected. Technical details, contracts, projected market values. Serena led the negotiations with polished aggression. Never overstepping, but never yielding either. Her voice never rose. Her posture never shifted, but the power in the room belonged to her.

"You’re not what I expected," William said, no longer able to contain his fretting. She's good, too good. He knew it, and it infuriated him.

"And what did you expect?"

Serena turned, her head slightly tilted. William hesitated but he said nothing. The words hovered at the edge of his tongue like a ghost threatening to breathe.

"I hope the next time we meet, expectations won’t matter, Mr. Velmond." The daughter of Serpentine finally smiled, this time sharper and almost imperceptibly.

When she stood to leave, William rose with her. Serena extended her hand again. This time, her fingers lingered a fraction longer. William certainly responded, and even the touch of those delicate fingers took him away for a moment.

The fading scent of fresh jasmine slowly pulled William back to awareness. Watching Serena walk away left a strange emptiness in his chest, even though he knew staying close to her would be far too dangerous.

"Sir, Miss. Cassandra’s been trying to reach you. She said it’s about the engagement."

Serena adjusted her blouse and walked calmly down the hall. A voice caught her attention, but she didn’t pause. She didn’t flinch when she heard the name of the woman who had contributed to inciting William to expel her, but her lips curled ever so slightly.

"A good meeting?"

Martin’s assistant was waiting by the elevator. When the elevator doors closed, Serena looked at her reflection, at the woman she’d become.

"Remind me to send William a bottle of champagne when our deal is approved," she commanded undeniably making her father's assistant raise an eyebrow.

"Any special message?"

"Yes," she said softly and added almost in a whisper. "Something tasteful, something cold. And tell the courier not to forget the ice!"

"Oh God..."Serena rubbed her head as a sudden wave of dizziness hit her. William had left her office a few minutes ago, but his words were still echoing in her mind. Even though he had corrected himself in the end by saying Selena’s name, she still couldn’t stop thinking about it."So back then... His mother deliberately saved me?" Serena lowered her head, rubbing her face over and over again. She hated feeling this way. She felt guilty, and stupid, for only finding out the truth now.So Mirelle Velmond had sacrificed herself to protect her and the triplets who were still in her womb at the time?Serena felt suffocated just thinking about it. She never would have expected it, especially since it was William’s mother who had invited her to meet at that park in the first place.Could it be that Mirelle Velmond had deliberately asked her to go there because she already knew about the assassination plot targeting her?Serena pressed her temples again. That possibility made it even harder

"Are you serious? You’re sure you didn’t see it wrong?"William’s words directly contradicted everything Serena had believed all this time. She lifted her head again, meeting the man’s gaze, then finally lowered it when he handed her an old photograph, its edges visibly worn and damaged."At first, I thought the same thing," William said while staring at the photo now in Serena’s hands. "I thought it might just be a business tactic, but... that photo changed my assumptions."Serena narrowed her eyes, trying to recognize the woman standing between her biological father and William’s grandfather. At first, she thought it was her mother, but it wasn’t. The woman’s gaze and the curve of her smile were very different, even though her height was almost the same as her mother’s."Who is this woman?" Serena asked, looking back at William. "She seems very close to your grandfather and my father.""That’s what I still don’t know," William replied, his eyes returning to the photo. "I accidentall

"What? Why are you only telling me this now?!"Serena immediately straightened her back when she heard the words of one of her father’s most trusted men that afternoon. She had just begun to feel a little calmer as, one by one, the people who had destroyed her life and William’s were finally being exposed. But now, she was confronted with shocking news she had never expected."I’m sorry, Miss," Martin said again, lowering his head. "I was only carrying out your father’s orders. He told me to inform you if his condition was still unstable after five days.""Just tell me the name of the hospital where he is," Serena cut in quickly, unwilling to waste any more time. "I’ll talk to him myself. I want to see his condition with my own eyes. And I want to ask him what happened to him before, what made him end up like this.""I’m sorry, Miss."Serena frowned when her father’s trusted subordinate only repeated his apology and said nothing more. As if answering it, William nodded, then gently rested his forehead against hers.Serena gasped, completely unprepared for the movement. Yet once again, she couldn’t step back or push him away. Every part of her felt frozen, held in place by emotions she had been desperately trying to bury deep inside her chest."Thank you," William whispered, his hand closing over hers, which was still cupping his face.Only then did Serena realize it. Her touch against William’s cheek slowly weakened, trembling so noticeably that William instinctively tightened his grip, grounding her before she could slip away.Serena’s hand lingered against William’s cheek longer than it should have. She felt the warmth of his skin beneath her fingers, felt the way his breath stuttered almost imperceptibly at the contact. "Did she really throw me out?"William glanced back, staring at the door that was now firmly shut between them. He drew in a slow breath, steadying himself, then cast a brief look around to make sure no one had witnessed Serena pushing him out of her office.Behind the glass window, Serena watched him leave. Only then did she release a quiet breath and sink back into her chair. She closed eyes for a moment, then reached for the tablet on her desk, forcing herself back into work."At least he’s gone," she whispered, though a strange, uncomfortable feeling still pressed against her chest.Numbers, charts, meeting notes, she clung to them desperately, letting them crowd her thoughts until there was barely any room left for William’s face, which refused to leave her mind."God! Is it already this late?"Serena frowned when she checked the time on her phone. She stood up at once. She should have gone home an hour ago, but she had been forced to replace her father in an internal meeting for

Her eyes blinked rapidly as moisture began to pool, and she quickly lifted her head just before a tear could fall, fanning her suddenly overheated face with her hand."How stupid of me to ever hope for anything with him," she muttered, lowering her head again as the ache in her heart deepened."He never really changed, did he? Yeah, I should’ve known better!"Letting out a shallow breath, Serena wiped her face, trying to steady herself. She looked back at her phone screen and picked it up to open the online news notification that had popped up.A photo of William and Cassandra together was clearly displayed amid the dim lighting, making her heartbeat spiral out of rhythm.
