“How is it?”
The question was answered by Feby with a shake of her head. Then she gave a bitter smile while staring at her phone screen that had gone dark.
“Ares might... still be in a meeting. So, he hasn’t been reachable all day,” Feby murmured after that.
“Are you sure?” asked the woman in front of her now.
“Maybe he’s busy with—”
“Mom!” Feby cut her off quickly. The middle-aged woman stopped speaking, especially when she saw Feby’s sour face.
“Well, I’ll remind you again, don’t expect too much,” she said.
After that, the atmosphere went silent as Feby chose to retreat to her room, spilling all the restlessness she had kept inside all alone. The clock showed it was already eleven at night. This meant the man she had been waiting for had finally finished his busy schedule. Feby, who was still awake, quickly approached her bedside table.
DING!!
[“Are you asleep, honey?”]
Feby smiled as she read the message. Soon after, her phone rang.
“Hello, Baby!” she exclaimed happily.
“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for your news all day.”
A playful whine slipped from Feby’s lips, expressing all her complaints for being ignored by the man on the other side. Not long after, just about a minute, since their conversations were often brief.
[“Yeah, honey. Sorry. I thought the event would finish by the afternoon. But Angga said it continued until dinner.”]
Feby didn’t immediately respond to this explanation. Instead, she switched their communication mode to a video call. A few seconds later, his handsome face appeared on her phone screen. “Okay, I forgive you then.”
[“Thank you. By the way, any news today, hmm?”] Instead of answering the question, Feby chuckled to herself. Her hands even caressed her growing belly.
“Our baby is a boy, Mas.” Feby’s eyes sparkled with joy as she shared the news, hoping for the same excitement to show on the man’s face.
[“Oh really??”]
Just as she had expected, her husband was surprised and smiled happily. Feby nodded enthusiastically, even showing him the ultrasound printout of their baby from her checkup that afternoon.
“What do you think? Are you happy, Baby?”
[“Of course, honey. He’ll be handsome just like me.”]
Feby then shared everything she had heard from the doctor during the check-up earlier, while her husband listened and smiled.
“I miss you, Baby,” Feby began to whine again.
[“I know. Be patient, okay? When I get a free schedule, we’ll meet up. Angga said the Governor wants to join the project inauguration too, so we’re still busy.”]
Feby sighed in resignation. She knew well she couldn’t force it. She also couldn’t go to him because the situation had to be understood. In the end, she gave in once again, not for the first time. The longing she had built up had to be bottled up alone.
The news of a celebrity's pregnancy on the TV made Feby pout. She felt a sense of jealousy because she wanted her husband by her side, especially after a week had passed without any news from the man she loved. The pregnant woman seemed melancholic.
"How does it feel, Feb? Living in wealth but feeling lonely, huh?"
The voice made Feby roll her eyes lazily. Instead of comforting her, her mother actually made a sarcastic remark.
"It's my choice, Mom," Feby finally said.
Her mother nodded slowly. "I know, Feb. Regret won't be useful now. You're already pregnant."
If this conversation continued, it would likely escalate. Feby, not wanting to argue, quickly switched the TV channel. Unfortunately, the next show was about something similar.
"Do you want to watch it, Mom? I'm getting sleepy. If you do, I’ll leave the TV on," Feby said as she got up from her seat.
Her mother nodded. "Sleepy or... just want to hide in your room?"
"Up to me. Talking to you just makes my heart hurt more!" Feby snapped, starting to get upset.
Luckily, her choice of action turned out well. Not long after, her phone rang. The screen displayed the name of the person she missed dearly.
"I'm sorry, Sayang. I turned off my phone on purpose to keep it safe."
"Mm," Feby, still upset, exhaled sharply.
The hormonal changes during pregnancy made the beautiful woman have to manage her emotions well, especially since her husband was not by her side at the moment.
"Hey! Why are you silent again?"
"What do you think? I miss you but there's no cure for it!!" Feby complained, almost crying.
"I'm sorry, Baby. The situation just doesn't allow it."
"When will you come home, Mas?"
Eventually, the question she never thought she'd ask slipped from Feby's mouth. She didn't know why, but suddenly, it just came out.
The atmosphere became quiet. Feby had already started to cry due to the overwhelming feelings at that moment. Meanwhile, the man on the other end was also silent. Then...
"Do I have to answer that question?"
"I'm sorry." Feby's sobs grew uncontrollable. "I—I just miss you."
"You should know better, Feb!!"
"What did you say??"
“Our longing means nothing compared to your happiness, Feby,” Zaki murmured sincerely.Feby looked at her youngest brother in surprise but also touched. “Zaki. Thank you. I wouldn't be able to get through all this without your support.”Sandi who sat next to Feby put her arm around his shoulder. “That's right. We've become a great team.”That night, under the star-studded sky, Feby felt a peace that she had never felt before. All the conflicts that had plagued her life were over. Bella had apologized, and they had reconciled. While Ares, her ex-husband had disappeared from their lives after being involved in a major corruption case, Feby felt strong enough to raise Haikal and Kayla without Ares' help. Now, there is only love and happiness in their home.
Three months later... Feby stood in front of the mirror, wearing a simple yet elegant dress. The sparkling dress reflected the soft light from the window, giving the impression that today was a special day. Although today was not a big day for her, Feby still felt a deep sense of happiness. Rania's marriage stepdaughter, who was like her own biological daughter-had made all the tension that used to surround them turn into tranquility.“Before, it seemed like all the problems were endless,” Feby murmured with a small smile to herself. The dress was perfect, and everything was ready for today's celebration.Feby gasped when she heard footsteps approaching from behind. It was Sandi, her husband. “Are you ready, darling?” she asked softly, standing in the doorway.Feby turned and smiled, looking at Sandi who looked dashing in her suit. “Ready, but I'm
“SURPRISE!!!”Feby was stunned. In front of her stood Sukma and Zaki, younger siblings whom she had not seen for a long time. Sukma, who is now busy with her work as a civil worker, and Zaki, the last time she heard back from overseas, seemed to be carrying a pile of gifts in their hands. However, what made Feby even more surprised was the two little boys who ran up to him with joyful laughter. Who else if not Haikal and Kayla, her children who have been living with Ares, her ex-husband?“Mama!” squealed Haikal. Their laughter echoed, and instantly Feby's heart melted along with the clear water that pooled in her eyes.Feby smiled fondly, her eyes beginning to heat up with unstoppable tears. “You guys... are you all here?”Sukma nodded, patting her sister's shoulder. “Of course, Sis. It's your birthday today. We won't miss the chance to surprise you.”Zaki smiled mischievously, handing Sukma a bouquet
“Never mind, Ran. Don't listen to your father. He's nonsense,” Feby said quickly. Rania, who had been grumbling, immediately laughed. Especially after seeing her stepmother's red face. She also understood the meaning of her father's words.“Yes, yes. Yes already!” Rania handed over the first aid kit in her hand. “Ma'am, hmm I mean Ms. Feby, uh mama huh? Or -”“Just call me as usual, Ran,” Feby cut in quickly. Her hand gently rubbed Rania's shoulder with affection. “You only have one mother in this world and I won't be able to replace her. So even though I'm your father's wife, but we can still be friends, right?”“Feby, why is that?” protested Sandi who objected.Feby laughed and said, “Is my husband afraid of looking old?”“Honey, ye
Feby swallowed nervously. The night air felt increasingly stifling, despite the cool breeze against her skin. Sandi pulled her closer until their faces were only inches apart. Now Feby's eyes fluttered, unsure of what would happen next. She could feel her husband's warm breath brushing her cheek.“Why call me that, hmm?” whispered Sandi, her eyes sharp yet gentle. “I'm your husband, not 'Om'.”Feby tried to avert her eyes, but couldn't. Their eyes were locked, and she knew Sandi was waiting for her. Waiting for something more than words. Feelings were mixed, between awkwardness, hesitation, and the desire to surrender to this moment.Gently, Sandi rubbed Feby's cheek with her thumb. The touch just now made Feby's heart race, so loud it could be heard. Slowly, Sandi lowered her face even closer, her lips almost touching Feby's lips which were still closed
Rania disconnected the call as soon as she saw someone walking towards her. The girl then chuckled. It was Feby who looked at her with soft eyes. “Rania, I know you're angry. You're disappointed. You have the right to feel that way. But please, give me a chance to talk.”Rania stood still for a moment, staring at Feby with sharp eyes. “Why did you have to marry my father? You know I love you very much, but why did you hide this from me?”Feby swallowed. She knew this would not be an easy conversation. “Rania, I know this is very hard for you. And I... I'm sorry if I made you feel betrayed. Believe in me, I never intended to hurt your feelings. Your father and I... never wanted to hurt you.”Rania averted her eyes, kicking a pebble on the ground with the toe of her shoe. “I never told you. All of this was sudden. I thought we would be a
