The post-practice quiet inside the fieldhouse locker room was louder than the scrimmage had been. Steam rolled in pale, thick waves from the shower stalls, smelling of iron, sharp eucalyptus soap, and wet concrete. Most of the team had already filtered out toward the dining halls, leaving only the dull drip of a faulty faucet and the low hum of the ventilation system.

Eli sat on the wooden bench, unlacing his cleats with slow, deliberate movements. His body burned with a deep, dull ache, but the real point of heat was his left hip. Underneath his compression shorts, the skin was already blossoming into a faint, purplish shadow, a direct souvenir from Adrians grip.

Eli touched it through his shirt, a strange, prickling sensation washing over his skin. He had spent the last hour convincing himself that the heat in the indoor complex was just adrenaline. Sports rivalry. Pure, aggressive dominance. But every time he closed his eyes, he didnt remember the ball or the coachs drill; he felt the desperate, uneven thump of Adrians heart against his chest and the dark, unreadable look in the captains eyes right before the whistle blew.

The heavy metal door at the end of the hall groaned open, followed by the slow, deliberate thud of wet flip-flops against tile.

Eli looked up. Adrian stepped out from the communal showers, a dark towel slung low around his hips, his skin still glistening with water. His wet hair was slicked back, accentuating the sharp, merciless angles of his jawline.

For a second, their eyes locked in the steam-fogged mirror across the room. Neither moved. The air turned instantly heavy, charged with the same volatile static that had nearly brought them to a standstill on the field.

Adrian broke the gaze first, walking over to his locker three stalls down from Elis. He yanked it open, the metal clanging sharply against the concrete wall, and pulled out a fresh navy hoodie.

You are slacking on your recovery, Adrian said. His voice was flat, cool, and completely devoid of the gravelly rasp from earlier. If you dont ice that hip, you are going to be useless for Thursdays tactical drills.

Eli let out a dry, bitter laugh, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared up at the captain. Is that concern I hear, Captain? I thought you were trying to run me off the pitch.

I dont care about you, Eli, Adrian replied, his back turned as he pulled the hoodie over his head. I care about the roster. I care about winning the conference. If you cant handle a basic shoulder check without limping around the locker room, you shouldnt have transferred here.

Eli stood up, the bench creaking under his weight. He walked slowly down the narrow aisle between the lockers, stopping just outside Adrians personal space. The scent of rain scented body wash and warm skin hit him immediately.

That wasnt a shoulder check, Adrian, and you know it, Eli said, dropping his voice to a dangerous, steady pitch. You pinned me. You held me. If the coach hadnt blown that whistle, what were you going to do?

Adrian froze. His hands rested on the top edge of his locker door, his knuckles turning white. Slowly, he turned his head to look at Eli sideways. Up close, Eli could see the fine droplets of water clinging to Adrians lashes, the tense pulse jumping erratically in his neck.

You dont want to push this, Adrian whispered, the warning sharp as glass. You think you are clever, transfer. You think you have got me figured out. But you have no idea what you are stepping into.

Then spell it out for me, Eli demanded, stepping closer until his chest almost brushed the cotton of Adrians hoodie. Because from where I am standing, it looks like the great Adrian Vance cant keep his head in the game whenever I am within arms reach.

Adrian turned fully, trapping Eli against the locker rows with his frame. He leaned in, his dark eyes snapping with an unholy fire, his face inches from Elis. For a fraction of a second, Eli thought the captain was going to break his own rule, that the cold facade would crack and Adrian would finally grab him like he did on the turf.

Instead, Adrians expression smoothed over into something terrifyingly blank. He reached into his leather gym bag, pulled out a heavy, unmarked manila envelope, and tossed it onto the wooden bench between them. It hit the wood with a dull, heavy thud.

Open it, Adrian said softly.

Eli frowned, his pulse spiking with a sudden, icy dread. He looked from Adrians deadpan face down to the plain paper envelope. What is this?

Your answer, Adrian said.

Eli reached down, his fingers hesitating on the metal clasp before sliding it open. Inside was a thick stack of printed documents, financial ledgers, and photographic printouts.

Eli pulled out the first page. It was a high-resolution photograph taken from a distance, showing Eli and his father sitting in a private diner back in his hometown six months ago. Across from them sat a man Eli recognized all too well, Coach Vance, Adrians father and the head of the universitys athletic board.

Elis breath hitched. He flipped through the next few pages. Bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and an official transfer waiver with a signature that wasnt his fathers, but a forged stamp from the athletic committee.

What... what is this? Eli stammered, his voice suddenly losing its sharp edge.

My father bought you, Adrian said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. Your old university was going to bench you for academic eligibility issues. My father wiped the record clean, paid off your familys athletic debt, and forged your transfer clearance.

Elis head whipped up. Thats a lie! My dad said—

Your dad took a payout to get you on this team, Adrian interrupted, stepping back and leaning against his locker, folding his arms. My father is under investigation for program corruption. The NCAA is sniffing around our facility right now. The only reason my father brought you here wasnt because you are a prodigy, Eli. It is because he needed a high profile transfer to cover up a four hundred thousand dollar deficit in the sports budget.

The air left Elis lungs as if he had been tackled all over again. The locker room seemed to tilt around him.

He used you as a distraction, Adrian continued, pointing a finger at the documents in Elis shaking hands. Every goal you score, every press release with your face on it, keeps the board from looking at the financial books. You arent my rival, Eli. You are the evidence.

Eli stared at the papers, his mind racing, trying to connect the dots of the last six months, his fathers sudden relief from debt, the rushed transfer process, the overly generous athletic stipend. It all made a sickening, undeniable kind of sense.

Why are you showing me this? Eli whispered, his hands trembling as he shoved the papers back into the envelope. If this gets out, your father goes to prison. The whole team gets shut down.

Adrian stepped forward again, closing the distance between them, but this time there was no heat, no mocking grin, no lingering fire. There was only a cold, desperate reality.

Because my father expects me to keep you under control, Adrian murmured, his hand coming up to rest lightly on the back of Elis neck, not aggressive, but possessive in a far darker way. He told me to keep your eyes on the pitch and away from the front office. He thinks I am watching you to protect him.

Adrian leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of Elis ear, sending a shudder straight down Elis spine.

But I didnt take this file to save my father, Adrian whispered, his grip on Elis neck tightening just enough to make Eli look him in the eye. I took it so I could own you before he destroys us both.

Eli stood frozen in the middle of his apartment, staring at the heavy wood as if it had suddenly transformed into something dangerous. His phone trembled in his palm, the anonymous photograph still casting a pale glow across his fingers. Out in the dim corridor, Adrian waited his dark hair damp from the autumn rain, his broad shoulders tense beneath a black jacket. He’s outside. Ask him what he’s hiding.Eli looked at the message again, then back at the door.“Eli,” Adrian called, his voice dropping an octave. “Please open the door.”“Who are you afraid of?” Eli shouted back.Silence.That heavy, suffocating silence frightened him more than any answer could have.“Open the door, and I’ll explain.”“You’ve had plenty of opportunities to explain,” Eli snapped. “Three weeks ago, something happened in the equipment room. You kissed me apparently. I kissed you first, according to a note I somehow wrote to myself without remembering a single second of it. And now someone is sending me pictu

After practice, Eli returned to the locker room to collect his phone. He had barely unzipped his bag when a second piece of black paper slipped from the pocket of his hanging jacket, fluttering down toward the rubber flooring. He caught it mid-air, his stomach executing a sharp, sickening freefall.Another note.He unfolded it with shaking fingers. There were only six words scribbled inside in that same immaculate silver ink:Stop looking at him like that.Eli stared at the message, a sudden chill running through his veins.“What the actual hell?”Mason, pulling a dry t-shirt over his head, paused and turned around. “Another one?”Eli wordlessly handed it to him.Mason read the words, his playful expression evaporating into confusion. “Okay. That's... different.”“Different how?”“The first one sounded like a confession. This sounds like a territorial threat.”Eli snatched the paper back, his fingers curling tightly around the edges. “Maybe someone saw me arguing with Adrian and decid

The note was waiting inside Eli Parker’s locker when he arrived at the rink that morning. It was a small piece of black paper folded in half, tucked between his spare gloves and the clean jersey he had left there the previous evening. His name was written across the front in silver ink.ELI PARKER.He frowned, tracing the sharp, deliberate stroke of the Y.“Since when do people write my full name like I’m being summoned to court?”Across the locker room, Mason Reed, the team’s left winger and Eli’s closest friend, looked up from tying his skates. “Maybe the coach finally discovered you’ve been stealing his protein bars.”“I don’t steal.”“You took three yesterday.”“They were sitting unattended.”“They were in his office.”“Exactly. Unattended.”Mason shook his head, a smirk playing on his lips. “One day, your mouth is going to get you killed.”“Hopefully not before I become a professional hockey player.”Eli picked up the note. The paper felt thick and expensive between his fingers.

The morning air inside the tactical media room was heavy with the stench of cheap coffee and stale floor wax. Eli sat on the third tier of padded theater seats, his ankles crossed tightly, staring at the back of Adrians head two rows below him. Adrian hadnt turned around once since film review started. He sat rigidly upright, his broad shoulders squared, taking precise, methodical notes in a black leather notebook. To anyone else, Adrian looked like the picture of dedicated leadership. But Eli knew better now. He knew the furious, uneven pulse that hid beneath that polished exterior. He knew the exact weight of Adrians fingers against his neck, and he knew how dangerously thin the line was between Adrians cold restraint and total control.Coach Vance stood at the front of the room, tapping a red dry-erase marker against the whiteboard where the roster for the upcoming three-game homestand was pinned. We have regional scouts and NCAA representatives filling the executive boxes for the

The thunderstorm rolling over the university campus sounded like artillery fire, heavy rain hammering against the corrugated metal roof of the training facility. Inside, the lights were turned off, save for the pale amber glow filtering through the high windows.Eli paced the narrow alley of the subterranean equipment room. The heavy envelope from yesterday sat heavy in his backpack, a physical anchor dragging him into a whirlpool of confusion and panic. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Adrians merciless expression and felt the phantom touch of those fingers wrapped around the nape of his neck. The heavy oak door groaned on its hinges. Eli whipped around, his chest tightening as a dark silhouette stepped into the room.Adrian.He closed the door behind him with a soft click, the lock sliding into place with a definitive metallic snap.
