Chapter 2

Author: Rich Fish
"The living and the dead are in different worlds. Those of us still here need to move on," Jody said, then she ended the call.

From inside the house came Jody's wanton moans.

She threw her arms around Pete's neck. "Sam's more of a woman than a man. It was just one little brat's life. It's been six months, and he still brings it up just to disgust me.

"You're so much better. You always do exactly what I want. I have to give birth to a child that's ours alone—our love child."

Jody shot a disgusted look at her phone and hurled it at the vase in the yard.

The ceramic vase—the one that held memories of our happy family of three, the one our daughter had painted with her own little hands—shattered into pieces.

She clung tightly to Pete on the swing, their bodies tangled together. But this was the swing I had made with Jody for our daughter. Back then, she was so gentle and shy. She had leaned against me in my arms and whispered nervously, "Honey, she's going to love the swing we made for her, isn't she?"

She was hopeful and anxious, afraid our daughter wouldn't like her as a mother.

But why had she forgotten all of it?

I slipped away in a daze and hid inside the car parked outside.

This was the first luxury car Jody and I bought after our business took off. We were so excited and nervous. We spent an entire month decorating it, turning the cold machine into a warm little home. She never let me smoke in it. She'd even scold me for drinking a sip of water inside.

I hadn't sat in this car for the better part of a year. Now, the floor mats were covered in cigarette ash. The seat had a big hole burned through it from a cigarette butt. And the car reeked of a certain indescribable, intimate smell.

I stayed inside like I was punishing myself, sitting there for three full hours. I didn't open the door until night fell.

The pain in my heart had gone numb. I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

The sound of me opening the door startled Jody, who had been eating. She quickly shoved Pete aside—he had been spoon-feeding her soup—and gave me an awkward smile.

"Sam, why are you back early? You should have told me. I would have picked you up.

"Pete made you some nutritious soup. I said I'd taste it for you first, so he just happened to feed me a spoonful. Don't overthink it."

I gave a faint nod and set my suitcase aside. The moment my eyes landed on her, my heart still lurched out of control. It had been a long time since I'd seen her. Her belly was indeed swollen.

Following my gaze downward, Jody smiled with a hint of condescension.

"Sam, you can never have children anymore. When this baby is born, we'll let him call you Dad. As long as you're good to him, he'll take care of you in your old age."

A gust of wind blew. Jody instinctively turned around and let Pete blow the sand out of her eye.

When she saw I wasn't responding, her voice turned cold, degree by degree.

"You should know what happens to a man who can no longer perform his husbandly duties. Besides me, who else would treat you this well? And don't forget, Chloe died because you failed to protect her. We're in this situation because you messed up big time.

"Pete is willing to stay by our side without any title, just for your sake. In this house, whatever you can't do, Pete will do for you. All you have to do is help take care of the baby."

Getting worked up, she forgot to step out of Pete's arms.

I looked at this absurd scene before me and barely held back my rage.

"Did you forget the vows we made on our wedding day? Through poverty and wealth, sickness and health, you promised to stay by my—"

"Enough, enough!" Jody cut me off impatiently.

"I don't want to listen to ancient history. Go wash the dishes. I'm not feeling well. I'm going to rest. You can talk to me when you've figured things out. Honestly, you've been spoiled way too much."

Zoe smiled gently. "You're not doing too bad yourself. You can afford an in-home doctor."Before I could respond, my assistant suddenly pushed the door open holding a bouquet of flowers. He looked at me apologetically."Mr. Mitchell, Jody is here. She asked me to give you these. She said if you won't see her today, she's not leaving."Zoe gave a soft smile, picked up her medical bag, and stood to leave. "Watch your diet for the next week. We'll do the surgery in seven days."I nodded and rubbed my temples in frustration.Jody was more persistent than I ever imagined. I couldn't tell if I should be happy or sad about that.My phone got bombarded every day with calls from different unknown numbers. Letters in Jody's handwriting, long essays thousands of words long—they found their way to my phone through every possible channel.Sometimes she'd send me photos of her and Chloe together. Every time, my heart would ache.I traced my finger over Chloe's picture and whispered to myself

"Sam, I'm sorry... I visit Chloe every day. I knew I'd run into you eventually." Her eyes filled with tears. Her lips trembled. For a moment, I was reminded of when I first met Jody. She had been upset about something at work, sitting alone by the river crying. I thought she was about to do something stupid, so I grabbed her and pulled her up onto the sidewalk. The moment our eyes met, she looked at me with red, swollen eyes and said, "I feel like the worst person in the world."From that moment on, I knew I wanted to protect her for the rest of my life.So after we got married, every time we fought, if she showed even a hint of weakness, I'd drop my pride and do whatever it took to make her happy again. But now? All I felt was disgust.Jody saw that I wasn't saying anything. She took my hand and pressed it against her chest. "I swear, I mean every word. Every single day without you, I can't stop thinking about you. I regret everything. I never should have lied to you from the

"Hey, Jody, that's not right. Sure, Sam's not doing well health-wise, but he willingly handed the whole company over to you. How could you do something like this?""Sam treated you so well. Even I, an outsider, could see it. Why can't you just be grateful?""This is disgusting. If you invited us here today to watch this, you've got way too much time on your hands.""I knew that baby in your belly wasn't Sam's. How trashy can you be—trying to pass off your bastard as Sam's kid."The banquet hall filled with jeers and laughter. Jody screamed, completely breaking down. She tried to grab Pete and explain, but she lunged at nothing.Pete shook her hand off in disgust. "I told you from the start—I'd only stay with you if we kept this underground. If you want to ruin my reputation, I'm not letting you get away with it either."He shoved her hand away. She fell hard to the floor.Over the years, Jody had strutted around the business world like she owned the place. Plenty of people could

The welcome home party was held at the most lavish banquet hall in the city. Jody had invited many powerful business partners from the circle. She led Pete around, working the room."Jody, you're so dedicated. Expecting a baby this far along and still bringing your young associate out to network.""That belly of yours doesn't look six months pregnant. But I heard your husband lost his ability to have children six months ago."She smiled graciously. "I have a smaller belly. This is the only bloodline my husband has left in this world."I swirled my glass of wine. What else was there to figure out? She called this a party for me, but she really just wanted to introduce Pete to everyone and force me to accept this child. But she miscalculated. When a man stops loving you, he'll never lose his head over you again.Soft music started playing. She stood in front of the cameras, talking smoothly, shielding Pete behind her the way I used to shield her."Four months from now, I hope you

"I was just too busy with work yesterday to stay at the cemetery. Next time I get a chance, I'll definitely go see her," Jody said. "Pete gets bored just sitting around the house. And all those kiddie things in the yard are useless anyway."I pulled my hand back without her noticing, stepped closer, and stared hard at her belly."I'm giving you three days. Either you chop off your hands to apologize for our daughter, or I'll put you on trial."The air went still. Behind me came Pete's mocking laugh."Sam, you're something else. You actually want to take your own pregnant wife to court? Say that out loud and everyone will laugh at you."Jody let out a quiet, almost invisible sigh of relief. She'd covered her tracks perfectly. How could Sam possibly know anything? He was just upset. Trying to scare her. Trying to get her attention. She gave a little smile. "Alright, what's done is done. From today on, let's just live our lives. Today's your birthday. I'm throwing you a welcome home

Chloe rushed over to hug me, but no matter how I moved, I couldn't catch her. Then her eyes filled with tears. She sobbed, heartbroken. "Mommy! Why won't Mommy come see me! I miss Mommy, I miss Daddy. I want to go home. It's so cold and hungry here. I'm so scared. My head hurts so much."When I woke up, my hands were numb. My face was covered in tears.A dull, aching pain pressed against my chest.I rubbed my temples and sent Jody a message. [Chloe came to me in a dream and said she misses you. Let's go see her together.]The message, sent as a careful test, sank like a stone. No response.I put my phone aside and opened my suitcase to pack. My daughter's room was still the same. If I could, I wanted to take everything in it with me exactly as it was.Looking at the sweet, innocent face in my daughter's photo—the same pleading expression she had in my dream—my heart ached.I zipped up my suitcase. My phone buzzed.Jody: [Okay. You drive. Let's go together.]My heart leaped.
