Chapter 56

Kellan

The lights went out while I was still standing there with my finger pointed at Harland’s chest, still halfway through telling him exactly how convenient it was that he happened to be alone with Sophia the same night my men got pulled into a lie four hours south of here, and one second the kitchen was lit up yellow and the next second it wasn’t, and none of us said anything for a solid three seconds because none of us understood yet what had actually happened.

Chapter 115Sophia"You dropped this."Harland held it out to me in the dark without coming any closer. A black hair tie, stretched out, the one I'd pulled out of my bun in the stairwell when his hands were in my hair. It was lying across his open palm like something he'd found on the ground and wasn't sure who it belonged to.I took it. Our fingers didn't touch. He made sure of that.I'd gotten dressed with my back to him. I don't know why. He'd seen all of me twenty minutes ago on that narrow bed. But I couldn't turn around while I pulled my scrub pants back on and found my bra under the chair and dragged my top over my head inside out and had to take it off and turn it the right way and put it on again. I could feel him behind me the whole time, sitting on the edge of the bed with the blanket across his lap, not saying anything. Not asking what the text said. Not asking who it was from. He knew. Of course he knew. His pager had buzzed twice on top of the stack of journals while I w

Chapter 114 Sophia“It’s me,” I said. “Yes.”He stayed braced on one arm above me, forehead almost touching mine, eyes open in the dark. He waited. He did not move until I reached up and pulled him down by the back of his neck. His mouth found mine again, slower than before. The thin mattress dipped under both of us and the metal frame made a soft complaining sound. There was barely enough room. His knee slid between my legs and one of my feet hung off the edge. I felt the cold air on my calf and laughed against his lips.“We’re going to fall,” I whispered.“Then hold on to me.”I did. My arms went around his shoulders and my legs hooked over his hips and we stayed on the bed by sheer stubbornness. He kissed the side of my neck, then lower, then came back up like he could not decide where he wanted to be. Every time his hips shifted the whole bed shifted with him. I heard shoes in the hall again. A cart rattled past the door. I pressed my hand over my mouth and he kissed the back of

Chapter 113Sophia"Are you sure?"He whispered it with my fingers on his third button, and he didn't move to stop me, and he didn't move to help me either. He just stood there with his back against the locked door and his arms at his sides, breathing like it hurt, and let me decide."Ask me again in a minute," I said."I will.""I know you will."I undid the third button, and the fourth, and the last one at the bottom, and I pushed the white coat off his shoulders. It slid down his arms and dropped onto the floor between our feet. Under it he was wearing the faded blue scrubs I'd seen him in a thousand times, standing at the nurses' station charting at two in the morning, and they looked completely different in the dark. He looked completely different. His hair still wrecked from my hands in the stairwell. The crack across his glasses catching the light from the little high window. He still didn't touch me.I understood then that he wasn't going to. Not until I told him to. Not after

Chapter 112 Sophia "You know about my mother now. Tell me something nobody knows."I thought about it. I thought about what I'd never told anybody. Not Kellan. Not Mia. Not my aunt, standing in her yellow kitchen holding me."When I was six," I said slowly, "the first night in the omega dorms. They put me in a room with four bunk beds and seven other girls, and they were all older, and they all knew each other. And I didn't cry. I lay there in the top bunk by the window all night with my eyes open, and I didn't cry, because I thought if I didn't cry, somebody would see how good I was being and come back for me." I swallowed. "I did that for a year. Every single night. I was so good, Harland. I was the best kid in that whole building. I made my bed every morning. I never talked back. I ate everything on my plate. And nobody came."He didn't say anything. He didn't tell me he was sorry. He just reached over and put his hand flat on the concrete step next to my foot, not touching me, j

Chapter 111Sophia"Breathe with me."He said it so softly I almost didn't hear it over my own heart. He was still crouched on the step below me, both his hands still locked around the metal railing, and my fists were still knotted in the front of his scrub top, pulling, and his face was right there in front of mine with the brown back in his eyes and something steady in them now that hadn't been there five minutes ago."I can't," I said. "I'm telling them to let go and they won't.""I know. That's not what I asked." He didn't let go of the railing. "I asked you to breathe with me. Just like you did for me. In. Four. I'll count."I breathed in. It shook."One," Harland said. "Two. Three. Four. Hold it."I held it. My hands didn't move."Out. Slow. One, two, three, four. Hold."We did it again. And again. His voice stayed exactly the same every time, low and even, the voice I'd heard him use with a little boy in the ER last spring who'd put his hand through a window and was screaming b

  • The Hot Alpha’s Curvy Craving    Chapter 110

Chapter 110Sophia I grabbed the front of his scrub top and pulled him down off his step onto mine, and the kiss stopped being careful. His glasses went skittering off the concrete and down three steps and neither of us looked. His back hit the metal railing. My knee hit the step. I didn't feel it. I had both hands in his shirt and his hands were on my face, my jaw, the back of my neck, and he was kissing me like he'd been starving, and I was kissing him like I'd been waiting, and somewhere under my ribs my wolf was making a sound I'd never heard her make before. Not a whine. Not a growl. Something deep and warm and steady, almost a purr, like a cat lying in the sun after a long winter. He pulled back an inch. Breathing hard. His forehead against mine."Do you want me to stop?" he whispered.I didn't answer. I pulled him back. His mouth went to my jaw. Then under it. Slow and open, his breath hot on my skin, and every place he touched went quiet, all the noise I'd been carrying for w
