“There must be twenty dragons flying around out there, we are never going to get out of here alive,” Lainey cried.
Dakari looked out between the rocks, the kaleidoscope of colors on the dragons was brilliant and would have been a delight to see if they weren’t all hell bent on finding and killing him. A bright red dragon seemed to be in charge as he soared the highest and appeared to be supervising the others.
“That’s Essam,” Lainey said following his gaze. “He’s the alpha. He’s smart and super mean. The others are all afraid of him.”
Lainey held on for dear life to the nothingness under her. She could feel coarse fur but could see nothing. Unparalleled awe struck her when she realized she couldn’t see her own hands or arms either. Soaring through space at dangerous speeds, hurtling towards the unknown had Lainey’s heart going into overdrive. Without warning her invisible transport banked right and began a downward glide. Underneath her she could make out trees and what looked like a little pond. Lainey hunkered down and held tight. They must be getting ready to land. The whoosh to her left terrified her. Before she could turn her head she smelled the ghastly sulphuric stench of her scaly captors and knew the nightmare wasn’t over.
Chapter 46 Lainey’s body lay twisted in an unnatural and grotesque position on the ground. She looked like a child sized mannequin that had been discarded, with the old ratty clothes still attached. The invisibility spell had left her the moment she was away from Penny and now her tiny form, obviously broken in more than one place lay unprotected and vulnerable. Maggie and Dakari swooped down as did Penny. The warriors formed a ring around her beating back the flames as the fire started to engulf the low brush. As Dakari bent to scoop her up, Penny grabbed his arm. “Wa
For hours the group took turns checking on Lainey. She had yet to move once, and the purple crystal continued to glow. Dakari thought he could see improvement in her limbs, although in his tired state he realized he might be imagining it. Dakari had conjured a small fire to keep them warm and they huddled around it. As they were all getting hungry he also envisioned a small door that they could go through and still stay invisible. They placed a rock on the ground in front of it so they could find it without running into the walls. Two of the warriors were able to go out and find a few rabbits, which were currently roasting over the fire.
She moaned and turned, her head hurt and she was parched. Peeking under eyelids seemingly plastered shut she saw Dakari tending a small fire. Memories of their escape came flooding back, feelings of radiant joy at the thought of getting away, then quick and utter despair at seeing Essam on their trail again. What was fuzzy was how it all turned out. How did she come to be camping in the forest with Dakari? Did they not get away? Dakari glimpsed movement out of the corner of his eye and rushed to Lainey’s side. Her arm was straight again, the bone seemingly healed overnight. Well, over two nights he thought. He watched her thrashing about, moving her leg in her effort to get free of the covers. He remembered the unnatura
“Plymouth is about five hundred miles away, we need to get going! Let’s load the helicopter.” “You have a helicopter? Why do you bother with a helicopter if you can fly?” Lainey asked, knowing she would never get on a plane again if she had that ability. “It takes enormous energy to fly. We would have to take many breaks to get there safely. The helicopter is good for long distances. Would you like another ride? Penny asked, sensing Lainey’s disappointment. “More than anything.”she beamed now.
As the sun crested high in the sky the little helicopter neared its destination. From her seat next to the window Lainey started calling out landmarks. “Look there’s Lanhydrock House, ” Lainey’s voice took on a strong British accent. Penny quickly turned around in her seat to ogle at the little girl…….. Her mouth quickly turned up at the corners as she saw the sparkle in the little girl's eyes.“Someone is sure excited to be home.” Penny reached back and rubbed Lainey’s knee. “Have you been there before?”“Mum and Dad used to take my sister and I to see every
As Lainey was being engulfed in love, an invisible Maggie and Penny stepped up beside Dakari. Penny laid a hand on his shoulder and he too disappeared from sight. In all the commotion, no one noticed. The three backed up a respectable distance so they could watch without worry of being bumped into. A news crew, cameras rolling, came running to the little group. “Lainey, Lainey,” they shouted. “Where have you been all this time? “Were you hurt?” “Can we get a word?” On and on they shouted. Nobody paid any attention. One reporter got inventive and hoisted himself on the
They brought the sandwiches back to happy soldiers, who were content to eat before starting out. The park was full of people anyway, out enjoying a rare warm day in winter, so there wasn’t any rush. Children played football, couples shared smooches on blankets, and students studied out of doors in groups and by themselves. As the day wore on, more people began to arrive. They came in groups, with heavy blankets and looked as if they meant to stay awhile. Dakari, bewildered by the behavior, gave up and went to take a nap under a tree. Curious by nature, Maggie set out on
