The Unseen Threat

Chapter 3

Rudina stood ready with her family. The drums had just sent out the Lyall. When the next command was sent, they would have no time to spare. The Mortal Pack always remained at home till signal was given. It was one of the old laws that actually made sense. At home they were safe but on the battlefield all were fair game.

Canagan Arrived with a sword and shield. He was new and uncontrollable. He couldn't have been a Werewolf for more than three weeks. Mastering a weapon to where you were battle ready took years. Now wasn't the time to give in to daydreams. It didn't matter what his story was...what was it to her?

" Happy Birthday Rudina." Canagan said as he handed her a large square box. " I know we didn't start off right and I'm sorry. A gentleman should get a lady a gift on her birthday." He turned to walk away but turned back." I'm lucky to have been Bonded to you. I know I'm not the one you wanted but I will honour The Bond.

She opened the box to find a stunning necklace with a beautiful milky stone in the center. The rest was made of fine white gold that looked fine as thread. The metal formed a symbol around the stone.

" May I?" Canagan asked and Rudina nodded. Canagan stood behind her and gently swept her hair to one side to put the necklace on for her. She didn't know if it was the cold metal against her bare skin or if there was another reason she dare not even think about but there were maximum shivers down her spine.

" I will always protect you Rudina." Canagan whispered as he finds the clasp and fastens the necklace. Definitely was not the necklace's fault the goosebumps were growing.

" LET'S GO, GO, GO!" Her father shouted.

"MOVING PACK!" They all responded. They moved quickly to their vehicles and sped to the battlefield. The battlefield had been made a neutral ground after too much bloodshed.

Five hundred years ago this land between The Mortals and Those of The Woods was fought over for years. Both Werewolf and Mortals suffered great loss. They decided to leave the land to neither side and would from then on settle all disputes on these grounds. The Werewolf called it 'The Bloodlands' since they could still smell it.

They arrived to chaos. They ran in blindly into smoke and flinging weapons. The Lyall were keeping most of the enemy troops at bay. Those who's sheer numbers helped them through were mostly handled by the Bardulf. The Bonded Alphas ran alongside their Hunter. Rudina looked around in awe at what an amazing team they made. They would take care of each other and defend each other. They knew each others strategies and movements so well that it looked like a dance. A beautiful, violent dance.

They were staying ground and keeping it. The Hunters didn't know this enemy but the wolves recognised them. They were cold and calculated. Matched in strength and durability. Rudina drew her bow and got two of them. She was so proud to have made such an awesome shot. She didn't notice the big one just behind her. Another Wolf jumped at the enemy saving her just in time. The other Wolf was Hunter! She knew he had just needed time and would be there for her.

Then Canagan lost his mind. He tackled Rudina to the floor. Hunter ran up to them to save her and then stopped dead in his tracks. Canagan covered her as something attacked his back. He howled in his Wolf form as blood pooled at his feet. Hunter couldn't see what had attacked Canagan and stood helplessly in shock. Canagan dropped to the floor and transformed back into human form.

He was hurt, very badly hurt and needed medical attention urgently. Whatever it had been had fled. Hunter stared at him till Rudina got up and fired a red flare. The noise snapped Hunter back to earth. Within minutes the medical team had stabilised Canagan and moved him to a safer location. Rudina had in their three years together never seen Hunter freeze like that. Did he hate the guy that much that he would leave him to die?

Then the roar of the soldiers and clanging weapons stopped and there was the familiar eerie silence that followed a battle. It was over but you couldn't let your guard down. They had lost David in the last battle. He had lifted his sword to celebrate their victory. The enemy they had fought had no honour. They had killed him after they had lost the battle. The code demands that when a side is declared the winner by defeat or surrender, that the bloodshed end.

Rudina heard loud cheers echo from all directions. Her body going limp with relief at the sound of The Imperial's Howl. They had won and survived. Was anybody else super hungry right now?

Hunter scooped her up and spun her around. She started to laugh untill a disturbing vision hit her mind. It was Hunter turning someone and then meeting with a someone else, a women!

Rudina sprung away from Hunter. She didn't know what that was yet but, it wasn't good. She had had visions before and they had been a warning. This one had also been the most clear she had ever seen.

"What did you see?" Her father asks after checking that she was safe and uninjured.

" I'm not sure yet but it seems we don't know everyone as well as we think we do." She couldn't wrap her mind around Hunter doing something shady, nevermind telling her father that her boyfriend that she had almost Bonded for life with, about to basically marry. To tell him that he's doing something bad.

" The moonstone Canagan gave you is a very meaningful gift little bear." Her father explained. " The stone can improve gifts of sight like yours. They can also help a Werewolf change quickly or for the first time. If you ever need him to change and he can't, use it."

" Dad you haven't called me 'little bear' in years." Rudina smiled up at her father.

" Doesn't mean you won't always be my 'little bear'." He smiles at Rudina and gives her a hug. " We don't know what attacked you back there. Canagan was the only one who saw it. He hasn't woken up yet so we don't know what happened. Take it easy on the guy a bit...he did just save your life.
