LOGINEvelyn's Point of View
I let out a breath, and the color slowly came back into my face. "Could you get me something to wear?" Sebastian nodded toward a paper bag that had come in with the breakfast. "Want me to dress you?" He hooked a finger under my chin and tilted my face up, his gaze burning into mine. "No." His eyes narrowed, and I rushed to fix it. "Have you eaten yet? Go ahead and eat. I'll change on my own." "Is my Evie worried about me?" He smiled, then pressed his mouth to mine in a long, deep kiss before releasing me. I nodded hard. My heart was in my throat, and it was pure fear. "Husband and wife, and still so shy." He drew his hand back. "Fine, have it your way. Get dressed like a good girl. I'll be waiting downstairs." My grip tightened on the paper bag. My eyes fell to the bed. The white sheets still bore the marks of the night, a reminder that I was no longer untouched. But there was no blood. Wait. No blood? His accusation echoed in my head: Evelyn, you slept with me. My thoughts scrambled into a knot. When I came downstairs in the new clothes, surprise flickered across Sebastian's face. It didn't stop him from settling his accounts. "Tell me. Why are you hiding from me?" He sat on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other, watching me. His eyes were black as obsidian, and a faint, unreadable smile hung on his lips, sharp beneath the amusement. My mind blanked for a second. "I don't know you," I said, wounded. "I haven't been hiding from anyone." Is this man insane? A moment ago he had been tender, and now he was interrogating me. "Good. Very good." His smile gave nothing away, but the chill in his eyes deepened. "I've been too lenient, haven't I? Lenient enough that you had the nerve to fake your death and stay hidden for three years." Three years? “My little girl had grown up, grown wings, and grown a harder heart.” He smiled sadly which made me more confused. "I don't know what you're talking about." I frowned. "You have the wrong person." His expression went glacial. "Three years ago, you faked your death for Julian. Now you pretend not to know me, to protect him." Something flickered across his face, a flash of old pain that vanished almost before I saw it. His jaw tightened. For a moment he looked like a man who had been hurt very badly, and that frightened me more than his anger did. I swore up and down that I'd never met him, never heard of any three years ago. It felt like talking to a wall. Whatever I said, he had already decided what the truth was. This obsessive man isn't listening to a word. He watched me, and I watched him. We were both completely serious, and we were talking about two entirely different things. "You went to such lengths for Julian." He smirked coldly, tapping one finger against the table, one brow raised. "Let's see whether Evelyn Hart, with a dead woman's name, can still live happily ever after with him." My frown deepened, and my instincts screamed that something was wrong. "What do you mean by that?" He tossed a newspaper onto the table in front of me, and his voice was cold as a blade. "Read it yourself." I picked it up and glanced at it once. The color drained from my face. The headline read: "Ashford Group CEO's Fiancée Dies Suddenly of Illness En Route to Wedding." I'm dead? "You did this." I stared at him, anger rising in my eyes. "Why?" "Don't rush to convict me. Keep reading." Sebastian's voice was cold, with something meaningful underneath. "Wouldn't want you hating the wrong person." I read on. My face went pale, almost transparent. The paper slipped from my fingers, and I stumbled back a step. "That's impossible. Why would Chesca be engaged to Julian...?" I shook my head, trembling like a leaf in the wind, ready to fall. "Your best friend and your fiancé got together behind your back, and to get their engagement through, they were willing to team up and kill you." Sebastian lowered his eyes to me and poured fuel on the fire. "Looks like you trusted the wrong people." "You..." I looked at him and found I couldn't argue. Whether I accepted it or not, he was right. Officially, I was a dead woman. "Evelyn, if it weren't for me, you'd be a corpse right now, eyes still open." He lifted his chin, as if granting a favor. "Beg me, and I might consider taking you back." "No." I didn't even think. I turned and ran for the door. He didn't stop me. A flicker of pain crossed his dark eyes, gone almost before I saw it. My fingers closed on the handle. No matter how hard I pulled, it wouldn't budge. Before I could turn and look for another way out, he caught me around the waist from behind, furious. "He doesn't even want you, and you still want to run back to him." He laughed coldly, his words cutting, as if mocking me was the only way to hide how deeply he was hurt. "No. Julian wouldn't." I shook my head. "Something must have happened. Wait... it was you, Sebastian. All of this is your doing." *** Third Person's Point of View Ashford Manor. Julian slammed the newspaper onto the desk in his father's study. "Dad, what is this?" Chesca hurried in behind him, trying to hold him back. "Julian, don't. Let's talk this through calmly." Richard Ashford looked at his son, anger rising in his eyes. "Is that how you speak to your father?" Julian's bloodshot eyes locked on him. "Evelyn was kidnapped. Why announce that she died?" "So she could come back alive," Richard said. "And spreading word of an Ashford–Whitmore engagement? Was that for Evelyn too?" Julian didn't give an inch, his eyes blazing. He had always known his mother favored Chesca as a daughter-in-law. He never imagined she'd move at the very moment Evelyn was taken. Richard slammed his hand down. "Would you rather announce to the world that the bride was seized and the groom still hasn't found a single hair of the kidnappers?" "I will find her," Julian said, his voice iron. "The only woman I will ever marry is Evelyn." "It isn't like that, Julian. You know how the press twists things." Chesca's voice was soft and quick. "Evelyn is my best friend. I would never steal her place." "I hope that's true." His gaze darkened with a warning. Chesca's heart skipped.Evelyn’s Point of View I frowned. My jaw hurt so badly it felt close to dislocating, and I forced the words out. "Why... do you hate Julian... so much?""He deserves to die." Sebastian's voice was low, shaking with anger he couldn't quite hold down.I could hear his rage seeping through my bones."How do I know Lydia wasn't ordered by you to slander Julian?" I tilted my head back to look at him, and my suspicion was plain on my face.He let go of my chin. His eyes narrowed, and something that looked like pain moved beneath the surface. "That's what you think of me?"I stepped back. "What should I think? If Julian, my own fiancé, could hurt me, why should I trust a man I've known for a few days?"He frowned. From where I stood, it was the most natural thought in the world.I braced myself, sure he was about to explode. Instead, he laughed."Good. That's my woman. Sharp." His thumb traced my lips, and he looked thoroughly pleased. "I'll give you the chance to learn for yourself who you
Evelyn's Point of View I could picture it perfectly. If not for Sebastian, that swollen, rotting body out there in the surf would be me."What is going on?" My eyes were wide, my voice tight with panic. His expression was mild, his dark eyes blinking lazily, a wicked little smile on that handsome face. "Let me tell you a secret. I put the body there.""You did?" I nearly leapt out of my seat. "Why?""A decoy." He didn't hide it at all. "Someone decided you were in the way. They wanted you to quietly 'die of illness.' So I gave them an Evelyn Hart whose body washes up from the sea."My mind began to race. The newspaper said I'd died of an illness. Now Sebastian had planted a body to muddy the water, which meant whoever was behind it would have to move, and in moving, show themselves. Then a more important question struck me. "Who is she? The woman in the water?"He shrugged, entirely unbothered. "Bought. Who knows.""..."I stared at him. Wasn't buying corpses illegal? Surely that was
Evelyn's Point of View "Julian... stop it, I'm answering your phone." Chesca's voice was low and breathless, sweet enough to drip. "If you don't say something, I'm hanging up.""Ah... again? I'm so tired..." The sounds on the line broke apart, and then the call went dead.I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles hurt. My eyes burned, and I bit my lip until I tasted blood, refusing to let the tears fall.Sebastian's mouth brushed my earlobe. "Bad timing, it seems."I fell apart. The phone hit the floor, and I screamed at him through sobs. "You knew! You knew the whole time, didn't you?"He had known Julian was in bed with Chesca. He'd given me that chance only so I could watch myself be humiliated."I warned you. You didn't believe me." His voice was low, and it was cruel in its calm."It was you. You set this up!" I shook my head and hit his chest again and again, with everything I had."I set it up?" Sebastian laughed coldly, and his anger rose. "Did I put Julian in her bed? Did I ma
Evelyn's Point of View Of course I remembered.Half a month ago, Lydia had thrown her birthday party in a private suite at the Champs Hotel, and half the city's socialites and heirs had come. As her best friend, I had helped Chesca plan the whole thing."You drank something that night," Lydia pressed. "Do you remember?"I frowned, and the memory came back piece by piece. "The cocktail."If I remembered right, Julian was the one who had poured it for me.Chesca, Lydia, and I had each had one. Soon afterward my limbs went heavy and weak, and Chesca had teased me about being a lightweight. Then Lydia had volunteered to take me upstairs to rest.So I wasn't a lightweight. I had already been drugged."I was terrified, and I'd had too much to drink myself," Lydia said. "I got confused about the floor and took you to Mr. Blackwood's room by mistake." She started kowtowing again. "Evie, please believe me. I never meant to hurt you."I stared at her. "Then tell me. If you hadn't made that mis
Evelyn’s Point of View In the villa's great hall, Winston stood to one side with his hands folded. The kindly old butler was gone, and his lined face looked cold and hard.A woman lay in a heap at his feet. Her ash-brown hair was matted and filthy and hid her face. Her clothes had been torn to ribbons, and blood seeped through the shreds.I clutched Sebastian's shirt without thinking and shrank against him in fear."Don't be afraid." Sebastian stroked my shoulder, soothing the trembling rabbit in his arms.He carried me to the sofa and settled me across his lap, the motion so natural and intimate that I couldn't find a way to object.I looked at the woman on the floor. It took me a long time to recognize her. "Lydia?!"I was so shocked my eyes went round.Half a month ago, this woman had been a dazzling beauty, the most sought-after socialite in the city. How was she here? Had Sebastian taken her?Barely conscious, Lydia stirred. Her unfocused eyes sharpened a little when they landed
Evelyn's Point of View I couldn't stop crying. The questions had stopped coming, but they were still echoing in my head, and my breath kept hitching until I thought I might black out. Then the door slammed open. The bang made me flinch hard. I curled tighter into the chair."Out." Sebastian's voice was low and savage, and when I peeked up, his eyes were red as blood. The single word seemed to press the air flat. The doctors scrambled for the door, practically tripping over each other.Through the gap, I caught Winston's voice, pleading and breathless. "Sir, she's too frail, she can't take any more." Then the door shut, and it was just the two of us.Sebastian crossed the room in three strides. "Evie," he said, softly now.I shook harder and tried to make myself smaller. Curling up was pure instinct, the kind no one ever outgrows."Don't be afraid." He pulled me into his arms and patted my back in slow, steady strokes. He sounded hurt, and a little helpless. "I watched all of it on th
