Chapter 1 No More Chances

Author: Wulan
The man on the other end of the phone gave a quiet chuckle. "Have you made up your mind?"

I answered calmly before hanging up.

Just then, a coat was draped over my shoulders from behind.

Nolan stood behind me and slipped a bracelet onto my wrist, his voice hoarse. "June, I'm heartbroken about what happened to the baby too."

The moment I saw the bracelet on my wrist, I couldn't help but cry.

It was my mother's keepsake, something I had lost many years ago. I never expected Nolan to find it and bring it back to me.

My heart wavered. Choking back a sob, I said, "Nolan, send Wendy away. We—"

But Nolan didn't seem to hear me at all. He continued on his own, "Wendy didn't mean anything by what she said. It was just a careless babble. What's done is done. Don't hold it against her."

Color drained from my face at once, yet he remained completely oblivious and continued, "The baby is gone, but we can always have another one."

I clenched my fists. But remembering the promise I had made to that man, I forced my tears back.

When Nolan saw that I wasn't answering, he lifted the bag in his hand. "Wendy specially brought you some chicken soup to help you recover. She wanted to apologize."

I lowered my eyes and saw the restaurant's name printed on the box. Wendy had just posted about that very spot on social media.

Because of one careless remark from Wendy, I had nearly bled to death on the operating table while Nolan had been sitting with her in a luxurious restaurant, enjoying a carefree evening together.

When I made no move to take it, Nolan sighed and opened the container himself, only to pause when he saw the gnawed chicken bones sitting in the soup.

He quickly put the lid back on and pretended nothing had happened. "It's gone cold. I'll have someone send over another one."

I let out a cold laugh. "A bowl of slop for an apology? Is she apologizing or deliberately provoking me?"

Nolan frowned unpleasantly at once. "June, Wendy's still young. It's normal for her to be reckless sometimes. Your health is also partially why the baby never made it. She's already trying to give you a way out. Can't you stop making things difficult for me?"

My whole body trembled, tears welling in my eyes.

Seeing me like that, Nolan softened his voice. "June, once you've recovered, we'll have the wedding. I promise there won't be any more accidents this time."

Just then, I received a refund notification from the postpartum care center.

Wendy called a moment later, her voice sickeningly sweet. "June, I canceled the postpartum care center you booked. You won't be needing it, anyway. And as for your seven-day hospital bill, please foot it yourself. I'm the company's CFO now, so I have to keep an eye on costs."

I whipped my head toward Nolan. There wasn't the slightest trace of surprise on his face. Instead, the corner of his mouth lifted in a faint, mocking smile.

How could you not have spent any of them, June? I'm sorry. I misunderstood you. How could I ever have thought you were after my money? "It's all my fault. We were married for seven years and in love for ten. How could you leave without taking anything with you? June, you're too cruel."…When Nolan barged in, he had a knife pressed against his own neck. One of Killian's bodyguards looked troubled. "Mr. Heinrich, we've never dealt with anything like this before. We weren't careful enough, and he managed to force his way in."The moment Nolan saw me, his eyes reddened. "June…"Killian stepped in front of me, his smile not reaching his eyes.

A warm feeling swept through my heart. The next time I entered the vital records office was in a wheelchair, with Killian pushing me.When the clerk saw me, surprise flashed across his face before he smiled and greeted me. "You're back again."I smiled too. "Yes."Even after I held the new marriage certificate in my hands, it still felt like a dream.Lost in thought, I felt Killian slip a ring onto my finger and smile. "Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Heinrich."Everyone around us offered their congratulations."May you have a long and happy marriage!"I sincerely thanked them all. "Thank you. We will."I took a photo of the marriage certificate and posted it on social media without adding a caption. The trending searches exploded almost instantly. The second post was a lawyer's letter with Nolan and Wendy tagged."Mr. Gallagher initially threatened my father's life and forced me to take responsibility on behalf of Ms. Saunter for the embezzlement and outstanding payments that r

Killian smirked. "Keeping a close eye on you is the most important thing right now. After all, I've suffered plenty at your hands."Remembering how I had helped Nolan set traps for Killian over the years, only to ultimately choose to marry him, I lowered my head in embarrassment.Killian chuckled softly. "I was suspicious of your true intentions at first. But after seeing how badly you'd been treated, I instantly understood why you wanted to marry me."I gave a bitter smile as well.If I hadn't chosen Killian, given Nolan's power in Seaport, I was afraid I wouldn't have been able to walk away unscathed. I simply hadn't expected Killian to actually honor the promise he'd made all those years ago.He patted the back of my hand. "Don't worry, you saved my life back then. I'll make sure you have a firm footing as Mrs. Heinrich."I quickly interrupted him. "This is only a partnership between us. If you ever meet a woman you truly like, I'll step aside without hesitation. I can even ex

The clerk looked at him with utter exasperation before turning toward the security guard at the entrance. "Take this gentleman to see the surveillance footage. "Honestly, I can't believe this. His signature and fingerprints are right there, and he's still claiming he didn't get divorced. Did he come here in his sleep?"The people nearby began whispering and pointing."You're new here, so you don't know. He's been here eight times already. He's practically a regular."Nolan had no time to care about the clerk's complaints. He instinctively pressed a hand against his chest, trying to steady his wildly pounding heart. He stared fixedly at the screen until he saw June staggering into the vital records office to collect her divorce certificate. The surveillance footage in the bottom-right corner showed the date. It was the day after she had given birth. That day, he had been accompanying Wendy on a trip to Vidali Island. For some reason, a wave of guilt suddenly washed over him.N

Blood covered the floor, some of it still wet.As Nolan walked inside, he spotted a ring lying on the ground. "This is June's ring."He turned toward his assistant. "Where is she?"The assistant looked around nervously. "I don't know either, sir. Yesterday, you said Mrs. Gallagher would be released when she realized her mistake. Since you never gave us any further instructions, we didn't dare release her on our own."Nolan's chest heaved with rage. "If you didn't release her, where the hell is she? I don't pay you useless idiots for nothing! It's freezing here. You locked her up overnight—did you think she wouldn't freeze to death?"The assistant kept his head lowered, not daring to answer.A string of urgent ringing suddenly broke the silence. When Nolan saw Wendy's name on the screen, an inexplicable wave of irritation rose within him. He declined the call, but the moment it ended, the phone started ringing again.Nolan clicked his tongue in annoyance and answered. "What is i

I was about to rush forward when Wendy climbed onto the windowsill in a panic and looked at Nolan, who had appeared behind her at some point, her voice filled with grievance. "Nolan, I only came here to apologize to June. But she forced me to clarify the withheld funds publicly! Now, everyone online is cursing me and wishing me dead."As she spoke, she leaned out the window, taking the jar with her. "I might as well die!"My eyes were red, and I could barely find my voice. "Please, leave my child alone."But Nolan's eyes held nothing but Wendy. He looked frantic. "Wendy, come down. Don't do anything stupid. Whatever you want, I'll give it to you!"Wendy turned toward me. "June forced me to apologize to her on my knees just now. I want her to do the same to me!"Nolan turned toward me, his face dark and menacing. "How could you be so vicious? Get down on your knees and apologize to Wendy. Do you really want to watch her die?"I stared at the man before me in despair and choked o
