I smelled it before I even opened the door.

Not perfume exactly, more like something sweet and wrong mixed together, the kind of smell that makes your stomach drop before your brain catches up.

I had my keys in my hand and my work bag on my shoulder, and I was thinking about what to cook for dinner, and then the smell hit me, and I just stood there in the hallway like an idiot.

I told myself it was overthinking. I told myself a lot of things in those three seconds before I pushed the door open.

The apartment was dim. I hadn’t left it that way. I always leave the kitchen light on because Marcus said it helps with the electric bill, but I still do it anyway because I hate coming home to dark rooms.

The kitchen light was off.

Everything was off.

I heard them before I saw them.

"Hmmm, ohhh… baby," a female voice said from the room. "You are so good… Yeah, right there."

"You like that," a voice that sounded like Marcus said with a tone I had never heard from him before.

Maybe I am just overthinking this issue, and my ears are playing a prank on me, and it’s not even him but someone else.

I pushed the bedroom door, and it swung open too easily, like even the door wanted me to see.

Marcus.

It was really him.

Two years of being with Marcus. His birthday is coming up next month; I already bought the watch. But here he is, on our bed, in our apartment, the apartment that I paid for because he was between jobs and I said it was fine; I can handle it, and instead he is here fucking someone in it.

The girl grabbed the sheet.

He grabbed nothing.

He just looked at me with this face like he was surprised but not sorry, like he was caught but not ashamed, and that look, that specific look, did something to me that shattered whatever hope I had of us.

"Zara."

He said my name like I was the problem.

I didn’t scream.

I thought I would.

I had always imagined that if something like this ever happened to me, I would be the kind of woman who throws things, who says sharp words, who burns the whole situation down with her voice.

I just stood there.

My bag slipped off my shoulder and hit the floor, and I didn’t pick it up.

"It’s not...." he started.

"Don’t."

I said it quietly, and that scared me more than anything else.

How quiet I was.

I picked up my bag.

I walked back out.

I sat on the hallway floor outside my own apartment, the apartment with my name on the lease, and I sat there for a long time.

I could hear movement inside.

Voices.

Low and urgent.

At some point I heard the front door open and close, and I knew the girl was gone, and then Marcus opened the door and found me still sitting on the floor.

He crouched down in front of me and started talking.

I watched his mouth move.

I heard sounds coming out.

Something about loneliness, and I wasn’t present, and this hadn’t been working for a while.

I caught words here and there like I was listening to a badly tuned radio.

"Are you hearing me?" he said.

"You need to leave," I said. "Tonight."

"Zara, this is a conversation we need to...."

"I pay for this apartment, Marcus. You need to leave tonight."

He left.

Not immediately; there was more talking, more words I didn’t fully absorb, but eventually he packed a bag and left.

I locked the door and sat on the kitchen floor because I couldn’t make myself go into the bedroom.

I called Priya at some point.

I don’t remember deciding to call her; my phone was just at my ear, and it was ringing.

"He was fucking someone in the apartment," I said when she picked up.

Silence.

Then, "I’m coming over."

She arrived in twenty minutes with wine she didn’t open and food I didn’t eat, and she sat on the kitchen floor with me without asking why we were on the floor.

That’s the thing about Priya.

She just locates where you are, and she goes there.

We sat there a long time.

"You need to get out of this city for a bit," she said eventually.

"I can’t just leave."

"You literally can. Come home with me. Come to Wrenfield."

She said it like it was already decided, like the conversation was just a formality.

"Two weeks. Fresh air. Different walls. You need to not be here right now, Zara."

I looked around the kitchen.

My kitchen.

The dish towels I picked.

The magnets on the fridge from places we traveled.

All of it suddenly felt like evidence.

"I have work," I said.

"So take leave. When’s the last time you actually took leave?"

She had me there.

"Wrenfield," I repeated.

I’d heard her mention it before, the small town she grew up in, the one she always described as quiet and close and complicated in ways she never fully explained.

"It’ll be good," she said. "I promise."

I looked at the bedroom door, still closed, and the thought of sleeping in that bed tonight made me want to throw up.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay, fine."

The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Priya sitting by my bedside, her hands folded in her lap, watching me with an expression that was trying very hard to look calm."You are awake?" she said, coming closer to me. "I am sorry, you made me do it.""I made you..." I was suddenly hit by a wave of headache, my head felt like it was spinning. I pressed my palm flat against my forehead. "What did you do to me?""You were becoming erratic and wanted to leave so I needed to calm you down," she said, reaching over and placing her hands on my head."Don't touch me," I said, pulling her hands away and rolling to face the other side of the bed. "I want to be alone.""It's alright as long as you promise not to leave.""I won't, now can you please leave me alone," I said into the pillow, my voice coming out more tired than angry.I felt the bed shift as she stood up and a few seconds later the door opened and closed. The ceiling was the same ceiling it had been yesterday and the day befo

"I don't know Zara I am as confused as you," Priya said, and she looked it, her brows pulled together, eyes moving to the door her mom had just closed."Fine." I exhaled through my nose. I cannot believe the one person I have been hiding from just walked herself to my location."let's go find out what she wants," Priya said moving to the door.I followed her out and down the stairs, one hand trailing the banister, my jaw already tight before I even saw her.Bella was on the couch with her legs crossed and her arm stretched across the backrest like she had been living there for years. Typical. She looked up when we came down and that smile spread across her face, the one that never reached her eyes."My, my, my." She stood up slowly, looking me over from bottom to top. "I was sure my mind was not playing tricks on me during the ceremony.""what do you want Bella and why are you here asking for me." I kept my voice even and my feet at the bottom of the stairs."wow." She tilted her head

Five days.Five days since the mating ceremony and that conversation in the forest and I was still turning over those last four words like a coin I could not stop flipping. *I was waiting for you*. And then he just vanished into the dark like he had not just dropped something like that on me with zero explanation.I have not left this room since.I am not even going to pretend the reasons are simple. There are werewolves outside who could snap my neck without really trying, Bella is somewhere in this town which is already enough reason to stay indoors, and then there is Caius who has appeared out of nowhere twice now and whose dark blue eyes I keep seeing every time I look at the window at night with his *I was waiting for you*. So no. I am staying in this bed."Can I come in," Priya said from behind the door."Yessss," I said, pulling the duvet tighter around my neck. She pushed the door open with a book tucked under her arm and dropped it on the drawer without asking. That is how th

Dark blue eyes, looking straight at me and not even pretending otherwise."Are you stalking me?" I said, and it was only when I was already saying it that I noticed up close how structured his face was, everything sitting exactly where it should, especially those eyes."Are you done admiring my face?""No," I said, and my hands flew to my mouth immediately. I cannot believe those words just came out of me.He chuckled. Low and quiet.I dropped my hands and crossed my arms. "what I meant was no, that is not what I asked you and I was not admiring your face.""I wasn't stalking you," he said simply."Then explain how I have bumped into you twice in less than three hours." I held up two fingers. "And don't think I didn't notice the staring contest you tried to start at the ceremony, you were watching me the whole time.""I wasn't staring at you, your face just happened to be in my line of sight," he said, his expression completely straight."do you take me for a fool." A blonde girl came through the passage into the clearing wearing a sundress and a mask, and the crowd lost their minds. The cheering hit so loud I actually flinched. Girls around me were standing on their toes trying to get a better look, some of them had their hands pressed to their chests like they were watching something sacred."hmmph, bitch," Priya said under her breath, her lips barely moving, her eyes fixed on the stage with an expression that could strip paint off a wall.I turned to look at her. "you don't seem to like his choice of Luna, or are you jealous," I said nudging her shoulder with mine, genuinely entertained by the look on her face."Ewwww never, that guy is so disgusting and she is worse, they are a match made in heaven," she said, her nose wrinkling like the thought alone had a smell."I thought you were his fan girl, you were excited to see him when we got here, what happened your mood just nose dived," I said watching her face curiously, trying to figure out wh

He said it like I was nobody, and he wasn’t just watching me from the clearing like a creep earlier. The ceremony is that way, miss. Not even a full sentence worth of attention and then he was gone, back to that chair, back to looking like the room owed him something. I could still feel my skin getting goosebumps as he left his presence sent cold shivers to my body.I found Priya in the crowd and got back to her before she could come looking for me.“You okay?” she said.“Fine, just went to clear my head.”She did not push it. “I understand all this is quite new to you but trust me you will enjoy it,” She said holding my hands. We turned back to the raised area and I crossed my arms and tried to look like someone who was supposed to be here, and tried not to look at a certain dark blue-eyed individual.Darius stepped forward and the crowd got into an uproar. Everyone of them was excited to see himband some girls were sending him kisses from were they sat. “we love you Darius,”
